Passive Film on Cobalt: A Three-Parameter Ellipsometry Study During the Film Formation

Thin film being formed on the surface of cobalt in the early stage of electrochemically induced passivation was studied by the three-parameter ellipsometry. The growth of the passive film was complete in a few seconds from the onset of the passivating potential, and was followed by a slight decrease in the thickness in 4-40 seconds. The optical constants of the passive film changed gradually during the changes in the thickness. The thickness and the optical properties at the steady state of passivation depended on the potential of the electrode. From the coulometric data and the optical properties, the composition of the passive films was deduced to be close to those of CoO, ${Co_3}{O_4}$ and ${Co_2}{O_3}$ depending on the potential. Cathodic reduction in the presence of EDTA was found to be an efficient way to obtain film-free reference surface of cobalt.

수산화나트륨 용액에서 니켈 표면에 형성되는 양극 산화막의 성질과 두께를 알기 위하여 反射率 측정과 楕圓偏光反射測定을 同時에 하는 實驗方法을 썼다. 높은 순도의 다결성 니켈을 연마한 후 부동화를 일으키는 피텐셜 범위 내의 여러 피텐셜에서 전기화학적으로 표면막이 생기도록 한 후, 자동화된 타원편광반사법측정기를 써서 반사율(R)과 타원편광반사법 파라미터 (△, Ø)들의 변화를 기록하였다. 이 기록된 실험치 들로 부터 표면 막의 두께와 광학상수(n, k)들을 계산한 결과 n=2.0∼2.5, k=0∼0.5, 두께=10∼20Å의 결과를 얻었다. 이러한 결과와 電氣化學的 측정치를 함께 고려하여 표면막은 Ni(OH)₂와 비슷한 조성을 가지되 일부는 탈수되어 NiO로 된 것으로 추정되었다.

H. Eyring등의 액체의 구조에 관한 이론에 따라서 액체 사염화탄소의 partition function을 정하였다. 이 Partition function 에 쓰인 parameter $E_s,\;{\sigma},\;{\theta},\;V_s$ 등은 액체 안의 고체와 같은 분자의 고요한 값으로 새로운 방법$^{(4)}$으로 그 값들을 정하였다. 이렇게 정해진 Partition function을 써서 액체 사염화탄소의 몰부피, 증기압, 한계점, 증발엔트로피 및 표면장력 등을 계산하였다. 계산치와 실측치를 비교한 결과 몰부피와 증기압, 엔트로피의 값은 거의 일치하였다. 표면장력 또한 실험치와 좋은 일치를 보여주는 값을 얻었다.

The rates of electropolymerization of pyrrole from aqueous solutions containing p-toluenesulfonic acid were studied as functions of the concentration of the surfactant anions and of temperature for the polymerization on the electrode surface immersed in the solution and also for the polymerization along the solution surface. In the case of the solution-surface polymerization, the polymerization rate showed maximum as the concentration of the p-toluenesulfonic acid changed at a fixed temsperature or as the temperature was varied at a fixed concentration. The decrease of the polymerization rate with increasing concentration or with rising temperature beyond the values at the maxima is interpreted as resulting from micelle formation.

Conducting polypyrrole doped with iron (Ⅱ,Ⅲ) hexacyanate Fe$(CN)_6^{z-}$ ions was studied for its physical and electrochemical properties. The polymer exhibited two pairs of waves in the cyclic voltammogram, one for the reversible oxidation/reduction of the incorporated iron hexacyanate ions and the other for the near-reversible oxidation/reduction of the polypyrrole moiety. The exchange of ions incorporated in the polymer and other ions present in solutions were examined by following the decrease of the reversible redox peaks of Fe$(CN)_6^{z-}$, and by EDX analysis. The spin density of this highly conducting polymer as probed by ESR spectroscopy was extremely low compared to polypyrrole doped with common anions.
A Sensitivity Analysis for Three-Parameter Ellipsometry

In the three-parameter ellipsometry (TPE), also known as reflectance-ellipsometry, the ellipsometric measurements, ${\Psi} and {\Delta}$, are combined with the reflectometric measurement, R, to determine the optical parameters and the thickness of a light-absorbing thin film. The constant ${\Psi}, {\Delta}$ and R surfaces are analyzed graphically to understand the nature of the TPE solutions. A sensitivityanalysis is shown to be useful not only for identifying the film properties which affect most the TPE measurements, but also for estimating errors in film properties arising from the uncertainties in measurements.
Electrochemical Reduction of Nitrobenzene and Substituted Nitrobenzenes on Lead Electrode

Electrochemical reduction of nitrobenzene and substituted nitrobenzenes on lead electrode was studied by galvano-static measurements and cyclic voltammetry in basic ethanol-water solvents. Nitroso compounds or hydroxylamines were detected as the main reduction product depending on the potential. Mechanisms of production and further reduction of substituted and unsubstituted nitrosobenzenes are deduced from Tafel slope, pH dependence and reaction order. The reduction of most of the substituted nitrobenzenes to corresponding nitrosobenzene derivatives seemed to follow the reaction mechanism of nitrobenzene reduction with a few exceptions. A Hammett type relationship between the magnitude of the reduction current and the kinds of substituents was found with the ${\rho}$ value of 0.54.
