Filial Piety, Parental Piety and Community Piety
Wendy Wen Li 숙명여자대학교 아시아여성연구원 2011 OMNES: The Journal of Multicultural Society Vol.2 No.1
Understanding filial piety within the sociocultural contexts, this paper explores elder support among Chinese migrant families in New Zealand. The methods of data collection and analysis were informed by a narrative approach. Three interviews were conducted with 32 older Chinese migrants. Findings suggest that traditional Chinese familial support to aged parents has changed. The traditional familial aged care is interwoven with the reciprocal parental support to children, the community, and social and institutional support. This paper demonstrates that filial piety is evolving within the broader social and political contexts and that the practices of filial piety among Chinese migrant families are fluid, dynamic, and changing. That is, when the context and situation change, the practices of filial piety are modified; when the practices of filial piety change, the self and identity shift.
