      • Applying Mobile Agent to a Mobile Stock Intermediary Services System Development

        Wen-Hsiung Wu,Po-Chang Ko,Ping-Chen Lin,Ming-Hua Su 보안공학연구지원센터 2008 International Journal of Smart Home Vol.2 No.2

Due to the radical changing of the global economy, a more precise stock valuation helps providing important judgment principles to decision-makers and investors. With the advent of the third-generation (3G) or future forth-generation (4G) Internet, the mobile commerce (MCommerce) will become increasingly important. In addition, the mobile stock investment decision support system attracts great interests for professionals, such as stockholders, bondholders, financial analysts, governmental officials, and even the general public, recently. This study introduces a Mobile Agent-based Stock Intermediary Services System (MASISS) framework based on the mobile agent perspective to provide ubiquitous and seamless transaction activities for financial institutions. It also helps customers to make a more precise decision in the current intense commercial competition environment. For building distributed enterprise systems, The MASISS framework is developed in an integration of J2ME and J2EE environment with cross-platform portability, a huge server-side and client-side deployment base, and coverage for most W3C standards..

Serum and Pleural Fluid Procalcitonin in Predicting Bacterial Infection in Patients with Parapneumonic Effusion

        Yang-Ching Ko,Wen-Pin Wu,Chi-Sen Hsu,Mong-Ping Dai,Chien-Chih Ou,Chih-Hsiung Kao 대한의학회 2009 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.24 No.3

This study evaluated the value of procalcitonin (PCT) levels in pleural effusion to differentiate the etiology of parapneumonic effusion (PPE). Forty-one consecutive PPE patients were enrolled and were divided into bacterial and non-bacterial PPE. Blood and pleural effusion samples were collected for PCT measurement on admission and analyzed for diagnostic evaluation. PCT of pleural fluid was significantly increased in the bacterial PPE group (0.24 ng/mL) compared to the non-bacterial PPE group (0.09 ng/mL), but there was no significant difference for serum PCT. A PCT concentration of pleural fluid >0.174 ng/mL (best cut-off value) was considered positive for a diagnosis of bacterial PPE (sensitivity, 80%; specificity, 76%; AUC, 0.84). Pleural effusion PCT in the bacterial PPE is significantly different from those of the non-bacterial PPE and control groups, so the diagnostic use of PCT still warrants further investigation.

Application of softened truss model with plastic approach to reinforced concrete beams in torsion

        Lu, Jun-Kai,Wu, Wen-Hsiung Techno-Press 2001 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.11 No.4

The present paper discusses the behavior of the reinforced concrete beams subjected to torsion by applying the endochronic plastic model in conjunction with the softened truss model. The endochronic constitutive equations are developed to describe the behavior of concrete. The mechanical behavior of concrete is decomposed into hydrostatic part and deviatoric part. New definition of the bulk modulus and the shear modulus are defined in terms of compressive strength of concrete. Also, new deviatoric hardening function is developed. Then, the endochronic constitutive equations of concrete are applied with the softened truss model for the behavior of the reinforced concrete beams subjected to torsion. The theoretical results obtained based on the present model are compared with the experimental data. The present model has shown the ability to describe the behavior of reinforced concrete beams subjected to torsion.

Initial Factors Influencing Duration of Hospital Stay in Adult Patients With Peritonsillar Abscess

        Yu-Hsi Liu,Hsing-Hao Su,Yi-Wen Tsai,Yu-Yi Hou,Kuo-Ping Chang,Chao-Chuan Chi,Ming-Yee Lin,Pi-Hsiung Wu 대한이비인후과학회 2017 Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology Vol.10 No.1

Objectives. To review cases of peritonsillar abscess and investigate the initial clinical factors that may influence the duration of hospitalization. To determine the predictive factors of prolonged hospital stay in adult patients with peritonsillar abscess. Methods. Subjects were adults hospitalized with peritonsillar abscess. We retrospectively reviewed 377 medical records from 1990 to 2013 in a tertiary medical center in southern Taiwan. The association between clinical characteristics and the length of hospital stay was analyzed with independent t-test, univariate linear regression and multiple linear regression analysis. Results. The mean duration of hospitalization was 6.2±6.0 days. With univariate linear regression, a prolonged hospital stay was associated with several variables, including female gender, older ages, nonsmoking status, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, band forms in white blood cell (WBC) counts, and lower hemoglobin levels. With multiple linear regression analysis, four independent predictors of hospital stay were noted: years of age (P<0.001), history of diabetes mellitus (P<0.001), ratio of band form WBC (P<0.001), and hemoglobin levels (P<0.001). Conclusion. In adult patients with peritonsillar abscess, older ages, history of diabetes mellitus, band forms in WBC counts and lower hemoglobin levels were independent predictors of longer hospitalization.
