From a ‘Small Cultural Underground’ to Sligo Folklore : The Early Years of the Yeats International Summer School

Vol.66 No.-

The Yeats Society of Sligo, and a Yeats Country Arts Festival in May 1958 had been established by what Jim McGarry, one of the seven original plotters, called Sligo’s “small cultural underground.” It had included a lecture on Yeats from Roger McHugh of UCD. An occasional lecture series from Padraic Colum, Ethel Mannin, briefly a mistress of Yeats’s, who donated his letters to the Sligo Co. Library, and Thomas Rice Henn, author of The Lonely Tower, in 1959, followed. The pharmacist, Tony Toher, on the corner of O’Connell and Wine Streets, had on display a set of 38 photographs of Sligo sights prepared and a “Yeats County” map made up to show those pilgrims who came in search of Yeats the geography of the county according to the places in the poems. Starting with this image of Sligo as “underground culture,” the author reflects his own experience when he first attended the Yeats Summer School and traces the history of the Summer School, providing rich information on distinguished Yeats scholars, such as T. R. Henn, Denis Donoghue, Frank Kermode, and famous Irish poets including Seamus Heaney, Geoffrey Hill, Brendan Kennelly, Thomas Kinsella, and Michael Longley.

‘Murmur[ing] Name upon Name’: Yeats, Daniel Crilly, John Kells Ingram and Young Ireland Balladry

Vol.70 No.-

Section V of The Tragic Generation, Book IV of The Trembling of the Veil (1922) opens with a double-themed meditation on the Rhymers’ Club and what became the Irish Literary Society. The connexion perhaps lies in the numbers of Irish- or Celtic-sympathizers among the active membership of the Rhymers’ Club. John Kells Ingram (1823-1907), who wrote in March 1843 ‘The Memory of the Dead’. arguably the greatest literary ballad of the Young Ireland era. By the time Yeats admitted authorship, Ingram’s ballad had been ‘for much of the nineteenth century the anthem of Irish nationalism.’ On the other hand, around 1916, Yeats recalls the diplomat Daniel Crilly (1857-1923)’s reading of the ballad ‘The Men of By and By’ in 1888 because, Yeats is not sure that even after the events of Easter, 1916, Ireland really has become the nation of Davis’s dream. Like Crilly then, he can only murmur over sacred names. Crilly’s old performance pushes Yeats to question only the harder this ritual of memorialisation.
