Does Spore Count Matter in Fungal Allergy?: The Role of Allergenic Fungal Species

        Wan-Rou Lin,Yi-Hsing Chen,Mey-Fann Lee,Ling-Yi Hsu,Chih-Jen Tien,Feng-Ming Shih,Shih-Ching Hsiao,Pi-Han Wang 대한천식알레르기학회 2016 Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Research Vol.8 No.5

Purpose: Fungi have been known to be important aeroallergens for hundreds of years. Most studies have focused on total fungal concentration; however, the concentration of specific allergenic fungi may be more important on an individual basis. Methods: Ten fungal allergic patients and 2 non-fungal allergic patients were enrolled. The patients with a decrease in physician or patient global assessment by more than 50% of their personal best were considered to have an exacerbation of allergic symptoms and to be in the active stage. Those who maintained their physician and patient global assessment scores at their personal best for more than 3 months were considered to be in the inactive stage. The concentrations of dominant fungi in the patients’ houses and outdoors were measured by direct and viable counts at active and inactive stages. Results: The exacerbation of allergic symptoms was not correlated with total fungal spore concentration or the indoor/outdoor ratio (I/O). Specific fungi, such as Cladosporium oxysporum (C. oxyspurum), C. cladosporioides, and Aspergillus niger (A. niger), were found to be significantly higher concentrations in the active stage than in the inactive stage. Presumed allergenic spore concentration threshold levels were 100 CFU/m3 for C. oxysporum, and 10 CFU/m3 for A. niger, Penicillium brevicompactum and Penicillium oxalicum. Conclusions: The major factor causing exacerbation of allergic symptoms in established fungal allergic patients may be the spore concentration of specific allergenic fungi rather than the total fungal concentration. These results may be useful in making recommendations as regards environmental control for fungal allergic patients.

      • Pancreatic Cancer Incidence and Mortality Patterns in China, 2009

Chen, Wan-Qing,Liang, Di,Zhang, Si-Wei,Zheng, Rou-Shou,He, Yu-Tong Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.12

Objective: To estimate the incidence and mortality rates for pancreatic cancer in China. Methods: After checking and reviewing the cancer registry data in 2009 from 72 cancer registry centers, we divided cancer registry areas into urban and rural areas. Incidence/mortality rates, age-specific incidence/mortality rates, age-standardized incidence/mortality rates, proportions, and cumulative incidence/mortality rates for pancreatic cancer were calculated. Results: The total number of newly diagnosed pancreatic cancer cases and deaths in 2009 were 6,220 and 5,650, respectively. The crude incidence rate in all cancer registry areas was 7.28/100,000 (males 8.24, females 6.29). The age-standardized incidence rate by Chinese standard population (ASR) was 3.35/100,000, with ranking at 7th among all cancers. Pancreatic cancer incidence rate was 8.19/100,000 in urban areas whereas it was 5.41/100 000 in rural areas. Cancer mortality rate in all cancer registry areas was 6.61/100,000 (males 7.45; females 5.75), with ranking at 6th among all cancers, and 7.42/100 000 in urban but 4.94/100000 in rural areas. Conclusions: Pancreatic cancer incidence and mortality rates have shown a gradual increase in China. Owing to the difficulty of early diagnosis, identification of high-risk population and modification of risk factors are important to reduce the burden of pancreatic cancer.

      • 부고환에 발생한 유선종 1례

        이수완,최홍용,노충희,최희석 인제대학교 1986 仁濟醫學 Vol.7 No.4

The term adenomatoid tumor was applied by Golden and Ash to certain Small, circumscribed, benign vision of the genital tract in recognition of their somewhat adenomators structure. Adenomatoid tumors are generally found in the epididymis, tunica vaginalis or spermatic cord in the male and fallopian tube, uterus, ovary in the female. But most the tumors are found near or in epididymis. The histogenesis of the adenomatoid tumor has been controversial. But the possibility of an origin from mesothelium are considered recently. Adenomatoid tumors are usual solid, asymptomatic neoplasm, its size are less then 2 cm usually. Histogically the tumor consists of tubular and gland pattern lined with cuboidal or flattened cell and a fibrous stroma. Recently we experienced a painful adenomatoid tumor of epididymis after trauma.

Influences of Three Oidiodendron maius Isolates and Two Inorganic Nitrogen Sources on the Growth of Rhododendron kanehirae

        Lei-Chen Lin,Wan-Rou Lin,Yu-Chen Hsu,Hung-Yu Pan 한국원예학회 2020 원예과학기술지 Vol.38 No.5

Rhododendron kanehirae Wilson is an endemic species of Taiwan that is listed as extinct in the wild by the Red List of Vascular Plants of Taiwan. R. kanehirae seedlings can form mycorrhizae with the ericoid mycobiont Oidiodendron maius. A completely randomized experimental design was conducted to investigate the effects of three different O. maius isolates (strains CBS110450, RhYM3, and RooDK1) as well as nitrate and ammonium (inorganic nitrogen) on the growth of R. kanehirae by evaluating height and shoot, root, and total fresh weight. Three isolates of O. maius showed different colony morphology and growth rate, which was further verified by molecular analysis. The results showed that application of ammonium fertilizer improved the height and shoot, root, and total fresh weight of all of the R. kanehirae seedlings. Among them, seedlings inoculated with RhYM3 had the highest fresh weights and heights. By applying an appropriate amount of nitrogen combined with RhYM3 inoculation, the rhizome of R. kanehirae grew well. The information provided here is crucial for the conservation of R. kanehirae, as this species is on the verge of extinction.

Impacts of the Korean Wave and the Conundrum of Malaysian Young Female Muslims

Keum Hyun Kim,Seung Yoan Rou,Wan Kamal Mujani,Mohd Farhan Bin Md Ariffin 숙명여자대학교 아시아여성연구원 2023 Asian Women Vol.39 No.3

There has been increasingly harsh criticism of the Korean Wave’s negative influence on young Malaysian women and girls since the early 2000s. This resulted from several untoward incidents that triggered the wrath of Malaysian Muslim society. From Muslim society’s point of view, young female Muslims in Malaysia seem to be deviating from Islamic norms and teachings due to the detrimental impact of Korean popular culture. This study examines the impact of Korean popular culture on young female Muslims in Malaysia. It looks, in particular, at whether they are exhibiting i) deviant behaviors, ii) erosion of moral standards, and iii) signs of identity crisis due to the negative influence of certain cultural elements in Korean popular culture that they passionately love. Their predicament was examined from the perspective of anomie through an analysis of data obtained from a survey of 643 female Muslim respondents between the ages of 13 and 40. The findings indicated that the majority of young female Muslims in Malaysia have not yet presented symptoms of anomie, as they are fully aware of the disparity between Korean and Islamic culture and norms. Nevertheless, amidst harsh criticism by the mass media and society of the deviations of some Korean Wave enthusiasts, some teenage respondents displayed uncertainty about the cultural disparity between their own Islamic norms and their beloved Korean culture. To overcome the prevalent skeptical view of the Korean Wave in Muslim society, it is imperative that all stakeholders provide Muslim youth with optimal guidelines and strategies to prevent potential anomie and deviance while ensuring their social, mental, and emotional well-being.
