A Regularity-Based Preprocessing Method for Collaborative Recommender Systems
Toledo, Raciel Yera,Mota, Yaile Caballero,Borroto, Milton Garcia Korea Information Processing Society 2013 Journal of information processing systems Vol.9 No.3
Recommender systems are popular applications that help users to identify items that they could be interested in. A recent research area on recommender systems focuses on detecting several kinds of inconsistencies associated with the user preferences. However, the majority of previous works in this direction just process anomalies that are intentionally introduced by users. In contrast, this paper is centered on finding the way to remove non-malicious anomalies, specifically in collaborative filtering systems. A review of the state-of-the-art in this field shows that no previous work has been carried out for recommendation systems and general data mining scenarios, to exactly perform this preprocessing task. More specifically, in this paper we propose a method that is based on the extraction of knowledge from the dataset in the form of rating regularities (similar to frequent patterns), and their use in order to remove anomalous preferences provided by users. Experiments show that the application of the procedure as a preprocessing step improves the performance of a data-mining task associated with the recommendation and also effectively detects the anomalous preferences.
FTAA, Output Adjustments, and Income Redistribution in a Small Open Economy: The Case of Peru
Hugo Toledo 중앙대학교 경제연구소 2004 Journal of Economic Development Vol.29 No.1
The Free Trade Agreement of the Americas (FTAA) expected to become effective by 2005 will advance South, North, and Central American free trade. As member countries adjust to free trade, various sectors of each economy will adjust differently. This paper uses the Specific Factors (SF) model of production and trade to estimate comparative statics elasticities of changing prices on factor prices and output for Peru under a free trade scenario. The model predicts that output changes and income redistribution in Peru resulting from the emerging FTAA are substantial.

In this study, the changes in compressive strength of steel tubular short columns with local corrosion is investigated using a finite element approach. The dimensions of the local corrosion are defined by its depth (0, 1.5, 3, 4.5 and 6 mm), height (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140, 160 and 180 mm), circumference (0, 90, 180, 270 and 360°) and location of damage along the steel tubular short column. There are 42 finite element models executed in this study that are categorized as Type A, Type B and Type C specimens. The results of the finite element models were compared against the previous experimental tests for model validation. Moreover, a parametric study was used to study the effect of the corrosion depth, height and circumference to the compressive strength of a steel tubular short column. Comparing the results of the finite element analysis, experimental and calculated compressive strengths, the percentage error is found to be within 10%.
