A STUDY ON NUTRITIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF RICE STRAW IN CHINA

        Tingxian, X.,Rejun, F.,Zhiliang, T.,Leihua, H.,Huiping, C. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 1993 Animal Bioscience Vol.6 No.2

The agronomic, morphologic and nutritive measurements were determined for ten varieties of the early-, medium- and late- maturing rice from five types of soil in south of China. The results are shown that (1) The higher contents of neutral detergent fibre (NDF), cellulose (CEL), hemicellulose (HC) and lignin (LIG), but lower crude protein (CP) and neutral detergent solubles (NDS) contents were noted for the whole plant of rice straw during maturation; (2) As far as the feed nutritive value, segments (S) is highest, then leaf blades (LB), leaf sheaths (LS) lowest. However, LB and LS are constituted about 75% of whole plant, the nutritive value of rice straw is depended upon the nutritive quality of LB and LS; (3) The dry matter disappearances (DMD) values of different spots of rice straw are different, the eary-maturing highest, then the medium; the late- lowest; (4) The DMD value of different fractions is different, S highest, then LB, LS lowest; (5) The different retention time in rumen, the DMD value of rice straw is different. As time following, the DMD value increased gradually, during 48-72 h, the DMD value achieves close to highest; (6) The grain yield (r = -0.91), plant height (r = -0.87) and full-filling grain percent (r = -0.75) are correlated negatively with DMD value, but the leaf/stem (r = 0.59) and the proportion of stem (r = 0.58) are correlated positively with DMD value. The relations between chemical compositions and DMD value are: Early-: DMD = 7.372 + 0.055 DM - 0.532 CP - 2.487 NDF + 1.143 ADF + 0.214 CEL + 1.456 HC + 0.718 LIG (r = 0.61). Medium-: DMD = 333.927 + 2.026 DM - 0.224 CP - 4.602 NDF + 4.524 ADF + 0.149 CEL + 2.923 HC + 0.035 LIG (r = 0.79). Late-: DMD = 133.284 + 0.282 DM - 3.455 CP - 22.185 NDF + 24.267 ADF + 0.316 CEL - 23.288 HC + 0.945 LIG (r = 0.79). Therefore, it is possible to predict the nutritive value of rice straw on the basis of the agronomic, morphologic measurements and chemical compositions and the relationship with DMD value.

POSSIBILITY AND POSSIBLE METHODS OF IMPROVING THE NUTRITIVE VALUE OF CEREAL STRAW WITHOUT PRETREATMENT (A REVIEW)

Xing, Tingxian Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 1988 Animal Bioscience Vol.1 No.2

In view of the wide range that occurs in the nutritive value of cereal straw, the factors that may contribute are discussed under the heading of : (a) genetic factors; (b) environment factors affecting the pattern of plant growth; and (c) management factors associated with grain harvest and threshing and straw storage. The possible ways of improving the nutritive value of cereal straw without pretreatment may be achieved by selecting and breeding better cereal straw, by controlling environmental factors, by controlling management practices and by appropriate supplementation strategies to alleviate deficiencies of essential nutrients. Thus improvement in the nutritive value of cereal straw would be attained without pretreatment.

EFFECTS OF RARE EARTH NITRATE ON INTERNAL ORGANS AND MINERAL ELEMENTS IN THE SERUM OF BROILER CHICKENS

        Kehe, X.,Tingxian, X.,Jiangwi, Z.,Shilin, D. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 1992 Animal Bioscience Vol.5 No.1

This paper reports the effects of rare earth nitrate (REN) on the growth of internal organs and mineral elements in serums of broiler chickens. The REN used is mixture of light RE containing mainly La, Ce, Pr and Nd 4 elements. 40 eight-week old AA broiler chickens were divided randomly into four groups that their treatments were respectively 0, 20, 200 and 2000 mg REN/kg feed and the duration of the experiment was 60 days. Responses were measured in terms of internal organic weight and tissue, contents of mineral elements in serums. There were no significant differences between the organ ratios and tissue changes of the 20, 200 mg REN/kg groups and the control group. The organs included the heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, testicles, thyroids, adrenal glands, pancreas, tonsies of caecum, stomachus glandularis, duodenum, ileum and bursa of Fabricius. The liver and thyroid indices of 2000 mg REN/kg group were significantly higher than those of the control group (p < 0.01, p < 0.05) and the adrenal gland index lower (p < 0.05). The pathlolgic changes in the heart, kidney and thyroid were more serious than that of the control group. No significant differences occurred between the contents of K, Na, Mg elements in the serum of all groups, with the exception of the content of Ca, which was higher in the 2000 mg/kg group (p < 0.05). The contents of all trace elements including Mn, Zn and Cu, but except Fe, in the serums of all the treated groups were significantly higher than those of the control group (p < 0.01).

COMPARATIVE STUDY OF FIBER CHARACTERISTICS OF RICE AND WHEAT STRAWS

Zhiliang, T.,Huiping, C.,Tingxian, X. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 1996 Animal Bioscience Vol.9 No.1

In this Experiment three wether male Matou goats (♂), all fitted with permanent rumen fistulae, were used to study the rumen degradabilities (incubation time 48h) of dry matter (DM), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF), acid detergent ligin (ADL), cellulose (CEL) and hemicellulose (HC) and their contents of wheat and rice straws were determined for the different morphological fractions and segments. The results showed that the variation of different fractions for wheat and rice straw is the true resources of their nutritive value variation and the cell wall contents of wheat and rice straw are also obviously different. The rumen degradabilities of different straw fibre are significantly different (p<0.01), mean while the effect of straw variety is also significant (p<0.05). The aim was to set up a foundation for studying the rumen degradation of the roughage resources.
