Racism, Ecology and The Uncanny Valley

The robotics model of the Uncanny Valley provides a highly illuminating way of understanding the dynamics of racism as it pertains to how humans treat the nonhuman world (the biosphere). Racism is in fact what underpins speciesism, the habit of seeing nonhumans as inferior to humans. To struggle against racism, then, is to work to eliminate speciesism.
Parastomal hernias after radical cystectomy and ileal conduit diversion

Parastomal hernia, defined as an "incisional hernia related to an abdominal wall stoma", is a frequent complication after conduit urinary diversion that can negatively impact quality of life and present a clinically significant problem for many patients. Parastomal hernia (PH) rates may be as high as 65% and while many patients are asymptomatic, in some series up to 30% of patients require surgical intervention due to pain, leakage, ostomy appliance problems, urinary obstruction, and rarely bowel obstruction or strangulation. Local tissue repair, stoma relocation, and mesh repairs have been performed to correct PH, however, long-term results have been disappointing with recurrence rates of 30%–76% reported after these techniques. Due to high recurrence rates and the potential morbidity of PH repair, efforts have been made to prevent PH development at the time of the initial surgery. Randomized trials of circumstomal prophylactic mesh placement at the time of colostomy and ileostomy stoma formation have shown significant reductions in PH rates with acceptably low complication profiles. We have placed prophylactic mesh at the time of ileal conduit creation in patients at high risk for PH development and found it to be safe and effective in reducing the PH rates over the short-term. In this review, we describe the clinical and radiographic definitions of PH, the clinical impact and risk factors associated with its development, and the use of prophylactic mesh placement for patients undergoing ileal conduit urinary diversion with the intent of reducing PH rates.
Capital Punishment and State Sovereignty in China

This essay considers the argument that Chinese legal exceptionalism with regard to its use of the death penalty derives from China`s Marxist/Maoist rather than its imperial history. Starting from the premise that capital punishment is the purest expression of state sovereignty under any political constitution, the essay inquires first into the general relationship between the state and punishment, then into that relationship as it is represented in the legal rhetoric of imperial law during the Ming dynasty. Reflections on some of the dynamics of debates over appropriate penalties a century ago as well as today lead to the conclusion that, despite the extensive reliance on the death penalty in earlier times, China`s legal exceptionalism resides primarily in its experience with Marxist jurisprudence rather than with its own indigenous traditions.
Recent H-alpha Results on Pulsar B2224+65’s Bow-Shock Nebula, the “Guitar”

We used the 4 m Discovery Channel Telescope (DCT) at Lowell observatory in 2014 to observe the Guitar Nebula, an Hα bow-shock nebula around the high-velocity radio pulsar B2224+65. Since the nebula's discovery in 1992, the structure of the bow-shock has undergone significant dynamical changes. We have observed the limb structure, targeting the “body” and “neck” of the guitar. Comparing the DCT observations to 1995 observations with the Palomar 200-inch Hale telescope, we found changes in both spatial structure and surface brightness in the tip, head, and body of the nebula.

In this paper, we propose a method to automatically diagnose various diseases. The input data consists of electrocardiograph (ECG) recordings. We extract R-to-R interval (RRI) signals from ECG recordings, which are preprocessed to remove trends and ectopic beats, and to keep the signal stationary. After that, we perform some prospective analysis to extract time-domain parameters, frequency-domain parameters, and nonlinear parameters of the signal. Those parameters are unique for each disease and can be used as the statistical symptoms for each disease. Then, we perform feature selection to improve the performance of the diagnosis classifier. We utilize the selected features to diagnose various diseases using machine learning. We subsequently measure the performance of the machine learning classifier to make sure that it will not misdiagnose the diseases. The first two steps, which are R-to-R extraction and preprocessing, have been successfully implemented with satisfactory results.
Inhibition of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. nicotianae Growth by Phenylpropanoid Pathway Intermediates

Fusarium wilt in tobacco caused by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. nicotianae is a disease‑management challenge worldwide, as there are few effective and environmentally benign chemical agents for its control. This challenge results in substantial losses in both the quality and yield of tobacco products. Based on an in vitro analysis of the effects of different phenylpropanoid intermediates, we found that the early intermediates trans‑cinnamic acid and para‑coumaric acid effectively inhibit the mycelial growth of F. oxysporum f. sp. nicotianae strain FW316F, whereas the downstream intermediates quercetin and caffeic acid exhibit no fungicidal properties. Therefore, our in vitro screen suggests that trans‑cinnamic acid and para‑coumaric acid are promising chemical agents and natural lead compounds for the suppression of F. oxysporum f. sp. nicotianae growth.
