Considerations for the incorporation of measured surfaces in finite element models.
Thompson, Mary Kathryn,Thompson, John M Gerhard Witzstrock Pub. House 2010 Scanning Vol.32 No.4
<P>This work discusses some of the benefits, techniques, challenges, and considerations associated with the incorporation of measured surfaces in finite element (FE) models including how much surface data to measure and import into the model, the shape of the surface geometry to create, the presence and effect of surface layers and impurities, the required mesh density for rough surfaces, the nature of the element formulations and material properties at small length scales, the differences between measurement and FE coordinate systems, the limitations and idealizations of the FE method, issues associated with boundary conditions and their ability to impose or prevent conformal contact, and issues associated with the size of the pinball region and the contact stiffness relative to the nature of the surface. It also describes some current and future research directions that can be used to validate and expand existing techniques and to improve our understanding of surface phenomena. Information Asymmetry, Time until Deal Completion and Post-M&A Performance
( Ephraim Kwashie Thompson ),( Changki Kim ) 한국파생상품학회(구 한국선물학회) 2020 선물연구 Vol.28 No.3
This paper aims to show that information asymmetry plays a vital role in the post-M&A performance-time until deal completion nexus. The findings are that the due diligence hypothesis and the overdue hypothesis proposed and tested in Thompson and Kim (2020) are influenced by the information asymmetry of the target during the negotiation process. Thus, mergers that involve more opaque targets that take a shorter time to close perform better, whereas those that take too long to close experience poor post-M&A performance. Conversely, there is no such effect when the mergers involve targets that are transparent and not plagued with large information asymmetry problems. These results hold for the short-term supporting the evidence that information asymmetry problems are severe before the merger is consummated and become attenuated post-merger.
SIMULATING A MULTIFACTOR GENERAL EQUILIBRIUM MODEL OF PRODUCTION AND TRADE
THOMPSON, HENRY 한국국제경제학회 1990 International Economic Journal Vol.4 No.2
This study builds and simulates a high dimensional general equilibrium model of production and trade with inputs of capital and eight separate skilled groups of labor. Constant returns to scale cannot be rejected in any sector as a null hypothesis. International capital flows and labor migration are found to have very small effects on income redistribution, a result which is called near factor price equalization. Protectionism, on the other hand, has more substantial effects. Elasticities describing the income redistribution due to protection in manufacturing, agriculture, and services follow a pattern suggested by factor intensities.

Wallace Stevens’ Hidalgo in a “most unpropitious place”
Thompson, Erik Robb 새한영어영문학회 2015 새한영어영문학 Vol.57 No.3
This article traces the course of the “hidalgo” figure across Stevens’ poetic career. The importance of this figure lies in how it plays an archetypal role in relationships to places in several poems by Stevens. What begins skeletally as a literary trope in Harmonium becomes more theoretical in Stevens’books from the 1940s and 50s. As Stevens’Spanish superego and alter-ego, the hidalgo merits critical deployment to uncover the role of the importance of places in many of his poems. In several poems from Harmonium, the hidalgo, like many of Stevens’ other personas that will evolve in later works, exists in inchoate forms such as Spanish dons and behind the masks of characters like Crispin from the poem “The Comedian as the Letter C.” In poems from the socially turbulent 1930s, the hidalgo and other Spanish personas serve to express unease with the impositions of public life on the private individual’s struggles for relationships with places. In later books from the 1940s and 50s, the hidalgo figure becomes fully recognizable as Stevens’ archetype of both the notion of place itself and of Stevens poetic voice itself. Finally, in1954, one year before Stevens’ death, it appears that the masculine hidalgo is part of a poetic construction that is always transforming seasonal change into feminine desire. This study offers readers of Stevens an archetypal localization of his familiar theme of the relationship between the imagination and reality.
