We have synthesized a prototype of a photochromic styrylquinolyl-dihydroindolizine (DHI), which forms a highly coloured and fluorescent betaine upon irradiation with $\lambda$ < 400 nm. Embedding this photochromic DHI in a thin polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) film permits the non-destructive readout via fluorescence at low temperature (77 K). Thus, either a non-destructive photoswitch or an information recording system becomes available. Both possibilities have been explored: image recording and read-out, as well as information storage (at 77 K) have been demonstrated. Cluster- and single molecule-fluorescence upon laser excitation ($\lambda$ = 355 nm) of the styrylquinolyl-dihydroindolizine in a PMMA matrix, and the effect of fluorescence blinking has been observed.
Behaviour of a plane joint under horizontal cyclic shear loading

This paper describes lab test results of artificial rock-like material samples having a plane joint. Cyclic shear tests were performed under different normal loads and different shear displacement amplitudes. For this purpose, multi-stage normal loading tests (30 kN, 60 kN, 90 kN, 180 kN, 360 kN and 480 kN) with cyclic excitation at frequency of 1.0 Hz and different shear displacement amplitudes (0.5 mm, 1.0 mm, 2.0 mm, 4.0 mm, 5.0 mm, and 8.0 mm) were conducted using the big shear box device GS-1000. Experimental results show, that shear forces increase with the increase of normal forces and quasi-static friction coefficient is larger than dynamic one. With the increase of normal loads, approaching the peak value of shear forces needs larger shear displacements. During each cycle the normal displacements increase and decrease (rotational behavior in every cycle). Peak angle of inclination increases with the increase of normal load. A phase shift between maximum shear displacement and maximum shear force is observed. The corresponding time shift decreases with increasing normal load and increases with increasing shear displacement amplitudes.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were obtained from Typha domingensis (an invasive macrophyte) collected fromlagoons and wetlands in Altamira, Mexico. Cellulose extraction was carried out by a treatment with aqueous NaOH in a batchreactor followed by NaClO-bleaching and subsequent hydrolysis with sulfuric acid. The fibers were characterized by FourierTransform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The crystallinity of the cellulose fibers isolated from Typhadomingensis increased from 29 % (not treated fibers) to 73 % and the beginning of thermal degradation increased from 246 oCto 312 oC before and after the bleaching. The CNCs isolated from this plant show average values of 20 nm in diameter and 190 nmin length. Micrographs of the Typha domingensis fibers and the cellulose isolated therefrom as well as bleached celluloseindicate the removal of hemicellulose, lignin, and waxes from the fibers, which corroborates the XRD and FTIR results.
