A Strategic Positioning Analysis for Container Terminals in Northern Vietnam

        Thi Yen Pham,Hye-Min Ma,Gi-Tae Yeo 한국항해항만학회 2016 한국항해항만학회지 Vol.40 No.5

Vietnam is one of Asia’s fastest developing economies. A long coastline of nearly 3,500 km provides a comparative advantage for Vietnam in developing a seaport system. Despite accounting for only about 30% of Vietnam’s traffic volume, the Northern seaports have rapidly developed over the years. However, the location of the container terminals close to the common hinterland are a cause of fierce competition among container terminals. To outperform rivals and improve competitiveness, it is essential to identify the competitive positions of container terminals. This study analyzes the competitive positioning of container terminals in the northern region of Vietnam between 2005 and 2014 by applying the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) matrix in order to assist terminal operators and policy makers to generate strategic planning as well as to improve priorities for development. Otherwise, the period from 2005-2014 aims to clarify the static and dynamic positioning of container terminals. The results demonstrate that the Hai Phong terminal dominates the market, but the Nam Hai Dinh Vu and Dinh Vu terminals are considered as “star” performers. Quang Ninh, Doan Xa, and Transvina are losing their competitive positions in Northern Vietnam

Application of Fuzzy Delphi TOPSIS to Locate Logistics Centers in Vietnam: The Logisticians’ Perspective

Thi Yen PHAM,마혜민,여기태 한국해운물류학회 2017 The Asian journal of shipping and Logistics Vol.33 No.4

Logistics centers have emerged as an important logistics infrastructure in supply chains. Hence, the problem of locating logistics centers plays a crucial role in designing and practicing logistics and supply chain management. Acknowledging the significance of logistics centers, Vietnam approved a master plan for the development of a logistics center system. However, the plan has been difficult to implementation because of the lack of the prioritization of the determinants used to locate logistics centers. This study aims to develop a benchmarking framework for choosing the locations of logistics centers based on the findings of logisticians by applying a hybrid of the fuzzy method and the technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS), both of which are utilized extensively to overcome problems in selecting locations. The results indicate that freight demand, closeness to market, production area, customers, and transportation costs are regarded as the most important factors in deciding the location of logistics centers. In addition, among the three locations considered, the northeast provinces of Ho Chi Minh City were the best location for logistic centers, followed by North Hanoi and Da Nang city. The findings of this study make a significant contribution to both academic and practical aspects of locating logistic centers.

A Longitudinal Analysis of Concentration Developments for Container Terminals in Northern Vietnam

Thi Yen PHAM,여기태,Jun Woo JEON,Viet Linh DANG,Young Doo CHA 한국해운물류학회 2016 The Asian journal of shipping and Logistics Vol.32 No.3

Vietnam has been one of Asia’s fastest growing economies since 1990, with a steady growth of 6-8 percent. Vietnam’s container port throughput volume also increases impressively year by year, at around 6-8 percent since 2002. To cope with increasing cargo volume, the development of modernized container terminals in Northern Vietnam has intensified. This longitudinal study aims to identify the development of the system and, in particular, the concentration or deconcentration tendencies, as well as the geographical patterns from 2005 to 2014. In order to achieve the study’s objectives, the Herfindahl–Hirschman Index (HHI), concentration ratios (CR1, CR3), the Gini coefficient, the Lorenz curve, and shift-share analysis (SSA) were applied based on container throughput volume data from 2005 to 2014. The results demonstrate that the development of container terminals in Northern Vietnam has experienced a deconcentration trend and considerable shifting among its terminals during the period of observation. The proposed and validated research is original as it is the first study of concentration, deconcentration, and geographical patterns for container terminals in Northern Vietnam. The findings will enable port authorities, policy makers, and port operators to understand the development and changes of container terminal systems in Northern Vietnam more clearly.

Evaluating Performance of Vietnamese Public Hospitals Based on Balanced Scorecard

PHAM, Cuong Duc,VU, Sen Thi,PHAM, Yen Thi Kim,VU, Nam Thi Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.6

The study evaluates the performance of public hospitals in Vietnam by applying the Balanced Scorecard (BSC). The authors first review the literature to find the research gap of performance in public hospitals. Then, we built Likert questionnaires to collect data from more than 200 managers of public hospitals in the Northwestern provinces of Vietnam. The research uses correlation regression to evaluate the performance based on the influence of factors in the BSC model, including Strategic planning, Internal process, Finance, Mission, Customer, and Employee learning and growth. The results show that the performance of public hospitals in the research sample is influenced by the factors in the BSC model in descending order based on the regression coefficient as follows: Internal process, Finance, Mission, Strategic planning, Customer, Employee learning and growth. Based on the quantitative research findings, we continue by conducting some deep interviews with specialty to propose intensive recommendations about how to implement Mission, Internal process, Financial policies, etc. to managers in public hospitals with an aim to improve the performance of public hospitals in the Northwestern mountainous region of Vietnam. The lessons could be applied for other public hospitals in Vietnam and other jurisdictions that have similar conditions.

Electrochemical Detection of TNT by Differential Pulse Adsorptive Stripping Voltammetry at Carbon Paste Electrode Modified by 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium Tetrafluoroborate

Ha Thi Thu Vu,Hanh Thi Vinh Le,Yen Thi Hai Pham,Hung Quoc Le,Phong Hong Pham 대한화학회 2016 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.37 No.3

Different kinds of materials for electrodes based on glassy carbon, carbon fibers, and modified by an ionic liquid (BMIMBF4) were used to determine 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) in water environment by differential pulse adsorptive stripping voltammetry. The modified electrode based on BMIMBF4 showed a better performance than those based on the microelectrode and glassy carbon electrode (GCE) in term of sensitivity. The best performance was obtained with the ionic liquid-modified electrode with 80:10:10 (w/w/w) of the graphite powder/paraffin oil/BMIMBF4 composition in PBS, pH 8. The TNT concentration was linear in the range 1.5 to ~30 ppm for all studied electrodes (r = 0.9978) with a detection limit of 88.6 ppb using IL-CPE (ionic liquid-modified carbon paste electrode). This latter electrode was used to measure real samples taken from Red River, Vietnam. The recovery study for TNT in natural samples gave values from 99.7% to 103.3%. IL-CPE demonstrated long-term stability and reproducibility, with a relative standard deviation of 1.67%.
