• The Beneficial Role of SMES Coil in DC Lines as an Energy Buffer for Integrating Large Scale Wind Power

Taesik Nam,Jae Woong Shim,Kyeon Hur IEEE 2012 IEEE transactions on applied superconductivity Vol.22 No.3

Wind energy resources are accounting for an ever-greater portion of the many nations' generation portfolios to address global climate change concerns and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Increasing the role of wind in the power generation mix, however, presents significant operational challenges in ensuring the grid security and power quality due to the inherent resource variability. This paper addresses the integration of large-scale wind resources into the grid through DC lines incorporating SMES coil: Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) type wind power plant linked by line-commutated HVDC with and without SMES is investigated using PSCAD/EMTDC for various operating scenarios. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of applying SMES coil in the DC line for mitigating the wind power intermittency and for improving its dispatchability and quality. Enhanced robustness for AC and DC faults due to the SMES coil and its benefits are also discussed.

Trade-Off Strategies in Designing Capacitor Voltage Balancing Schemes for Modular Multilevel Converter HVDC

        Taesik Nam,Heejin Kim,Sangmin Kim,Gum Tae Son,Yong-Ho Chung,Jung-Wook Park,Chan-Ki Kim,Kyeon Hur 대한전기학회 2016 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.11 No.4

This paper focuses on the engineering trade-offs in designing capacitor voltage balancing schemes for modular multilevel converters (MMC) HVDC: regulation performance and switching loss. MMC is driven by the on/off switch operation of numerous submodules and the key design concern is balancing submodule capacitor voltages minimizing switching transition among submodules because it represents the voltage regulation performance and system loss. This paper first introduces the state-ofthe-art MMC-HVDC submodule capacitor voltage balancing methods reported in the literatures and discusses the trade-offs in designing these methods for HVDC application. This paper further proposes a submodule capacitor balancing scheme exploiting a control signal to flexibly interchange between the on-state and the off-state submodules. The proposed scheme enables desired performance-based voltage regulation and avoids unnecessary switching transitions among submodules, consequently reducing the switching loss. The flexibility and controllability particularly fit in high-level MMC HVDC applications where the aforementioned design trade-offs become more crucial. Simulation studies for MMC HVDC are performed to demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed capacitor voltage balancing algorithm.

Diagnosis of split fractures of the mandible in adults

Taesik Kim,Sung Gyun Jung,In Pyo Hong,Young Joong Hwang Korean Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association 2023 Archives of Craniofacial Surgery Vol.24 No.4

Background: Mandibular split fractures, in which the fracture occurs exclusively in the posterior wall, are uncommon. This study aimed to enhance clinicians' understanding of mandibular split fractures and offer insights for future research. Methods: This study included six patients who visited our hospital between January 2020 and June 2023 and were diagnosed with mandibular split fractures. We retrospectively collected data from patients' medical records on their age, sex, symptoms, mechanism, impact site, associated injuries, and treatment method, as well as the location, pattern, and number of fractures observed on computed tomography (CT) and panoramic images. The frequency of split fractures among all mandibular fractures was calculated. Results: The six patients included three men (50%) and three women (50%), ranging in age from 20 to 71 years (mean age, 49.8 years). The split fractures were located in the symphysis in one patient (16.7%), symphysis to parasymphysis in two patients (33.3%), parasymphysis in one patient (16.7%), and parasymphysis to the body in two patients (33.3%). Four patients (66.7%) had condylar head fractures, while two patients (33.3%) had single split fractures. The mechanism of trauma was a slip-down incident in four cases (66.7%), while two cases (33.3%) were caused by motorcycle traffic accidents. Four patients (67%) underwent intermaxillary fixation, while two patients (33%) improved with conservative treatment. Split fractures were diagnosed in all six patients on CT, whereas the fracture line was not clearly visible on panoramic images. Mandibular split fractures accounted for 5.6% of all mandibular fractures. Conclusion: This study provides insights into the clinical characteristics of rare mandibular split fractures and the diagnostic imaging findings. Furthermore, CT scans and three-dimensional image synthesis-instead of panoramic images-may be essential for accurately diagnosing mandibular fractures, including mandibular split fractures, in the future.

        Eucharist is Giving

TaeSik Park 한국민중신학회 2016 Madang: Journal of Contextual Theology Vol.0 No.25

All Roman Catholic churches including Anglican Church practice Eucharist in the same way. On the evening before his death on the cross, Jesus shared wine and bread with his disciples. To date, ‘Last Supper’ is the mostly researched theme in Systematic Theology. But the purpose of this work is to reconstruct historical ‘Last Supper of Jesus’ not through the systematical approach, but through biblical approach. It is very important for us to reconstruct and to find the characteristics of the historical ‘Last Supper of Jesus’, because the ‘Last Supper of Jesus’ is the foundation of the 1st century Christian church’s Eucharist (as the sacrament). The history of the Church has been for 2000 years. During this time, there were many values that appeared and then disappeared, changing the tendencies of the Church in the various ways. What are, then, the permanent values that remained intact in these 2000 years of history of the church? One of them is surely the worship done every Sunday, especially the Eucharist.2) Although our subject is known by a variety of meanings in the different branches of theology, it is certain that, through the Eucharist, the communication with God is finally possible. Moreover, it takes the roll of confirming the identity of every christian.

        Bound Noun cis in Korean

        TaeSik Kim 한국생성문법학회 2016 생성문법연구 Vol.26 No.2

This paper starts from the examination of categorial status of cis in Korean and argues that cis is not a free noun, but a bound noun. Cis shows typical behaviors as a bound noun: it cannot stand alone in a sentence, but requires the aid of other lexical items such as possessors, adjuncts, and complements. Further, adopting the movement analysis from a lexical N position to a functional small n position given in Kim (2011, 2016) for a bound noun kes in Korean, I show that the same analysis can be applied to the bound noun cis. The movement is motivated by the metaphorical/abstract meaning of cis, since the small n is more related to a functional meaning rather than a lexical meaning. In terms of grammaticalization, I argue that both kes and cis are closer to functional items and they are in the stage between a fully lexical item and a more functional item.

Underwater Walking Mechanism of Underwater Amphibious Robot Using Hinged Multi-modal Paddle

        Taesik Kim,Young-woon Song,Seokyong Song,Son-Cheol Yu 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2021 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.19 No.4

This study proposes an underwater walking mechanism for an underwater amphibious robot that is propelled by a degree of freedom flapping foil system. To implement stable walking in water, we proposed a distinctive hinged multi-modal paddle and developed an underwater amphibious robot. For the proposed paddle, forward walking model is proposed regarding both the ground contact and hydrodynamic forces in each walking phase: the stanceand swing phases. Then, we generalized dynamic equations of motion for the amphibious robot based on the forward walking model. The proposed mechanism and robot were evaluated through thrust and forward walking tests in an indoor water tank. The results of the forward walking test exhibited a highly accurate trajectory of leggedlocomotion compared to the model-based simulation results. Moreover, field tests on gravel and soft terrains of aseabed, revealed that the proposed system allowed the amphibious robot to walk qualitatively.
