      • Chaste rebellion: The disobedient daughter in antebellum literature (Lydia Maria Child, James Fenimore Cooper, Catharine Maria Sedgwick, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Harriet A. Jacobs)

        Sweet, Nancy F Columbia University 2005 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2591

The dutiful yet defiant daughter operates as a powerful new literary construct in antebellum narrative. Centrally positioned in the cultural conflicts that occupy antebellum fiction are daughters who enact a "chaste rebellion" that challenges traditional authority while privileging restraint, piety, and social justice. Through exploration of the role of the defiant daughter in the writings of Lydia Maria Child, James Fenimore Cooper, Catharine Maria Sedgwick, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Harriet Jacobs, my project challenges the conventional view of the daughter-figure as a stilted paragon of domesticity and argues that early American culture confirmed the measured disobedience that she models. While daughters figure prominently in literature of diverse eras, their role undergoes a radical refiguration in antebellum fiction. From Genesis to King Lear, the defiance of daughters is represented as an irremediable sin, destructive to family and society, regardless of the daughter's virtue or rationale for dissent. Departing from this master narrative, antebellum writers celebrate the defiant daughter-heroine as an ameliorating figure in an increasingly divided culture. Beginning with Catharine Maria Sedgwick's A New England Tale (1820) and soon expanded by James Fenimore Cooper's The Pioneers (1823) and Lydia Maria Child's Hobomok (1824), the new American heroine succeeds by contravening traditional authority. Her triumph serves to usher a new era of Enlightenment into a young republic still under the sway of colonial religious and cultural values. The chaste rebellion of daughters represents an alternative mode of progressivism in the early republic, diverging from the individualism of the antebellum masculine hero. Whereas male heroes in the American novel tend toward radical individualism in their escape to the woods and the sea, the tempered rebellion of the antebellum daughter seeks to honor filial, communal, and religious obligation. Rather than abandoning the domestic milieu that male heroes and writers---from Natty Bumppo to Henry David Thoreau---find so oppressive to the human spirit, the antebellum daughter-heroine furthers social progress from within the strictures of her culture. Chaste Rebellion contends that in accommodating her competing obligations, the daughter in her dissent becomes a model not only for women, but for a nation founded in revolution and seeking to define the proper relationship between individual and community.

      • Marking the Untellable: A Theory of Reading Punctuation in the Work of Emily Dickinson, Marguerite Duras, and Clarice Lispector

Sweet, Stephanie Paige University of Minnesota 2011 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2591

My dissertation, "Marking the Untellable: A Theory of Reading Punctuation in the Work of Emily Dickinson, Marguerite Duras, and Clarice Lispector," provides a systematic and comparative examination of experimental punctuation in literature and film. My central argument is that extending literary analysis to innovative uses of punctuation reveals historical and cultural connections that are not fully expressed in the language of a text. My research builds on existing studies of punctuation, which are provocative but scarce. Although eminent theorists such as Theodore Adorno and Giorgio Agamben have published essays on punctuation, both comprise fewer than ten pages. Similarly, Christian Metz's analysis of punctuation in film limits its discussion to editing techniques. While more sustained analyses of punctuation also exist, they tend to focus narrowly on one writer, text, or film. Using work by Emily Dickinson, Marguerite Duras, and Clarice Lispector, I explore how punctuation marks serve as historical-political residues that at once point to contemporaneous political-historical conditions and erase them. I argue that reading the shards of the (historical or experiential) untellable embedded in punctuation opens another dimension of literary and imaginative space wherein it is possible to consider ways of re-punctuating social and political life. The project is situated in relation to methodological debates about comparative modes of analysis, feminist analyses of the political in literature and film, and considerations of the political investments of experimental writing more generally. After exposing the regulatory work of conventional punctuation, I show how creative uses of punctuation point to historical and political situations that remain unspoken within the text. Also, by showing how gender marks the construction of these counter-memories, I contribute new insights to feminist scholarship on the unique politics of these writers; I also expand the scope of what counts as the political in literary and cinematic work. My objective is to demonstrate how punctuation marks a space between the historical, the textual, and the personal as a space of interaction and interference, and as a dynamic and generative space out of which a new grammar of the political can be forged.

      • Statistical Network Models for Replications and Experimental Interventions

Sweet, Tracy Morrison Carnegie Mellon University 2012 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2591

Current methods of social network analysis are ill-suited to modeling the multiple partially-exchangeable networks that arise in randomized field trials and observational studies in which multiple classrooms, schools, or districts are involved. To address these needs and drawing from the statistics literature on single network statistical models, I introduce a new organizational framework, Hierarchical Network Models (HNM). HNMs can be used to extend single-network statistical network models to multiple networks, using a hierarchical modeling approach and allow one to not only model ensembles of networks from observational data but also fit network level interventions. The I-1NM framework is quite flexible in that any statistical network model can be used; I introduce two families of models as examples, the Hierarchical Latent Space Model (HLSM) and the Hierarchical Mixed Membership Stochastic Blockmodel (I-IMMSBM). Using both simulated and real world data, I show how each class of model may be specified for both observational and intervention data and show that parameters are generally well-recovered. In addition, I introduce a covariate version of the Mixed Membership Stochastic Blockmodel. Motivated by educational interventions, I also focus on power analysis to address how I-INMs can be used to design experiments on networks. Because ties are not independent, typical power analysis calculations for clustered data are not applicable. Instead, I use theoretical results from the statistical literature which I apply to the HLSM to derive bounds for power and these results are corroborated with simulations.

      • Spalling fracture behavior in (100) gallium arsenide

Sweet, Cassi A Colorado School of Mines 2016 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2591

Record-high conversion efficiencies inherent in III-V solar cells make them ideal for one-sun photovoltaic applications. However, material costs associated with implementation prevent competitive standing with other solar technologies. This dissertation explores controlled exfoliation of III-V single junction photovoltaic devices from (100) GaAs substrates by spalling to enable wafer reuse for material cost reductions. Spalling is a type of fracture that occurs within the substrate of a bilayer under sufficient misfit stress. A spalling crack propagates parallel to the film/substrate interface at a steady-state spalling depth within the substrate. Spalling in (100) GaAs, a semiconductor with anisotropic fracture properties, presents unique challenges. Orientation of the cleavage plane is not parallel to the steady-state spalling depth which results in a faceted fracture surface. A model is developed by modifying Suo and Hutchinson's spalling mechanics to approximate quantitatively the spalling process parameter window and the thickness of the exfoliated film, i.e. spalling depth, for use with (100) GaAs and other semiconductor materials. Experimental data for faceted (100)-GaAs spalling is shown to be in agreement with this model. A faceted surface leads to undesirable waste material for low cost application to the solar industry. Therefore, methods to mitigate the facet size are explored. Trends in facet size and distribution are linked with both the stressor film deposition parameters and the spalling pull velocity. A spalling fracture is a high energy process where damage to the exfoliated material is a concern. Spalled material quality is assessed directly by dislocation density analysis and indirectly by characterization of electrical performance of high quality spalled photovoltaic devices sensitive to material damage such as dislocation and microcrack occurrence. Controlled application of spalling in (100) GaAs is achieved by exfoliation of a high performance single junction solar cell resulting in 18.2% conversion efficiency without the use of an anti-reflective coating. It is shown that spalling in (100) GaAs is a successful device exfoliation process that does not generate defects or cause degradation to device performance.

      • Hepatitis C: Hepatocellular carcinoma, mortality, and the impact of treatment

Sweet Kennedy, Kristin Ann University of Minnesota 2014 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2591

Hepatitis C (HCV) infection is the most common bloodborne illness in the United States and the prevalence is highest in those born between 1945 and 1965. Most of those with HCV infection in this cohort have been infected for decades and some are now experiencing the long-term consequences of HCV infection, including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. At the same time, this cohort is just reaching the age of eligibility for Medicare. The introduction of new treatment protocols including direct-acting antivirals for HCV infection has resulted in better outcomes for those undergoing treatment with many achieving a cure of their HCV infection. Despite an awareness of the potential burden of disease from HCV infection in this cohort, there is still a lack of information regarding hepatocellular carcinoma outcomes in persons with HCV and the impact of treatment for HCV outcomes and transmission. Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results data linked to Medicare claims, this research describes (1) changes in risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma, including HCV infection, over time and (2) differences in outcomes of persons with hepatocellular carcinoma by HCV infection status in the Medicare population. In addition, a state transition model with a transmission equation was used to compare the impact of treatment on mortality and HCV transmission using direct-acting antivirals to treat persons born between 1945 and 1965 in two risk populations, persons who inject drugs and persons who don't inject drugs. Overall, this research adds to our understanding of the consequences of HCV-infection-related hepatocellular carcinoma and the impact of treatment in the population with the highest prevalence of HCV infection.

      • Everybody's somebody in my class: A case study of an exemplary middle school choir teacher

Sweet, Bridget Mary Michigan State University 2008 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2591

The purpose of this study was to explore, investigate, and describe the teaching and the characteristics of a middle school choir teacher who builds and nurtures a musical learning community in her classroom. This ethnographic case study was emergent; however the creation of a safe learning environment, development of musicianship, and empowerment of students remained central lenses throughout the project. This research began under the assumption that the teacher's (Deb) classroom was democratic, in the sense that students contributed to discussions of subject matter and classroom policy. However, once immersed in the environment and culture of the Kinawa Middle School choir program, it became obvious that, although students accomplished several democratic goals, Deb did not share classroom power with her students. Although Deb's classroom functions as an autocracy, it is also extremely "student-focused.". Stories of Deb's life, as a developing musician and teacher, influence her choral program and work with middle school students. Values, beliefs, and morals are cornerstone to Deb's teaching philosophy and practice, as evidenced by her creation of choir as "Safe Place," endorsements of random acts of kindness, and the motto "SPAM: Singing Produces Awesome Miracles." Deb's focus on classroom community, with an emphasis on morality, is an integral part of the Kinawa Middle School choral program. The interactions between Deb and her students influence and nurture positive and respectful relationships between all students during her choir classes. Through music, Deb works to influence and educate each student about being the best person that he or she could be, both inside and outside of the Kinawa choir classroom. Students are also taught to be strong and thoughtful musicians. Therefore, Deb's teaching practices suggest it is possible to achieve democratic musical, intellectual, emotional, and community goals through an autocratic, yet student-focused, classroom. Conclusions from this study of Deb Borton elicited six primary ideas: (1) Democratic outcomes may be achieved in a middle school choir class through teacher-led teaching practices; (2) A safe classroom environment provides opportunities for middle school choir students to be themselves without inhibition, in a culture of acceptance; (3) Middle school choir teachers are in a position to make meaningful impressions on their students, especially with regard to morality and awareness of others; (4) A sense of humor is an important characteristic of an effective middle school choir teacher; (5) Exemplary choir teachers are valuable resources for professional development; and (6) Personal stories are important when working with people. Implications for future research include examinations of middle school choir teachers' philosophies and their philosophical influence on democratic versus autocratic teaching methodologies, as well as examinations of classroom settings that appear or claim to be democratic and how they achieve democracy. Research on characteristics of safe classroom environments is also recommended.

      • Components of Inclusive Education at a Public Charter School in the Northwestern United States

        Sweet-Fears, Jennifer R Walden University ProQuest Dissertations & Theses 2022 해외박사(DDOD)

Examining the components of the inclusive educational setting at Public Charter School is important for its positive impact in its community and being an example to other schools in the northwestern region of the United States. The problem is that the school’s surrounding area and region are underserved in inclusive charter school options. The school is an example to other charter schools that would like to engage in a more inclusive academic setting and seeks to explore replication. To gain a better understanding of the impacts of the school’s inclusive setting on the students, families, and community, as well as the educators’ needs and perspectives, the purpose of this study was to identify, explore, and understand the components of Public Charter School’s inclusive academic setting through qualitative methods using interviews with key participants. The analysis process of this study involved categorizing data and recognizing emerging themes from data collected through interviews. The data identified three components: supportive administration in attitude and operational leadership, environment conducive to inclusion, and teacher supports and collaboration. This study will provide the organization with information to continually improve the inclusion model through training and policy and may also be used to make informed decisions regarding replication in the future. The school provides guidance in the region and nationwide and may serve schools that want to implement or improve inclusion. Student success in inclusive academic settings can support acceptance and tolerance, which may lead to more students pursuing higher education and in turn lead to positive social change in communities and beyond.  .

      • Language-Based Techniques for Secure Programming

Sweet, Ian University of Maryland, College Park ProQuest Diss 2022 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2591

Secure Computation (SC) encompasses many different cryptographic techniques for computing over encrypted data. In particular, Secure Multiparty Computation enables multiple parties to jointly compute a function over their secret inputs. MPC languages offer programmers a familiar environment in which to express their programs, but fall short when confronted with problems that require flexible coordination. More broadly, SC languages do not protect non-expert programmers from violating obliviousness or expected bounds on information leakage. We aim to show that secure programming can be made safer through language-based techniques for expressive, coordinated MPC; probabilistically oblivious execution; and quantitative analysis of information flow. We begin by presenting Symphony, an expressive MPC language that provides flexible coordination of many parties, which has been used to implement the secure shuffle of Laur, Willemson, and Zhang. Next, we present λObliv, a core language guaranteeing that well-typed programs are probabilistically oblivious, which has been used to type check tree-based, nonrecursive ORAM (NORAM). Finally, we present a novel application of dynamic analysis techniques to an existing system for enforcing bounds on information leakage, providing a better balance of precision and performance.

      • Diverging by Design: The Narrative Rhetoric of Choice-based Role-Playing Games

Sweet, Andrew Dylan ProQuest Dissertations & Theses The Ohio State Uni 2022 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 2591

Despite their cultural ubiquity and widespread acceptance within various academic fields as objects of study, video games continue to have a vexed relationship with narrative theory in a way that other popular cultural forms, such as film and comics, do not due to their presumed incompatibility with so-called ?traditional? schools of narrative. This dissertation pushes back on the notion that video games require entirely new theories of narrative by applying rhetorical narrative theory to choice-based role-playing games, bringing a narrative school which has been primarily developed through literary texts to bear on a particular genre of narrative video game and asking what we can learn about both in the process. Across a series of three case studies (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the Mass Effect trilogy, and Fire Emblem: Three Houses), I seek to demonstrate how rhetorical narrative theory's conception of narrative - as purposeful communication within a feedback loop among authors, texts, and audiences - can provide useful ways forward for dealing with persistent tensions in video game narrative scholarship between narrative and gameplay, authorship and participation, and narrative potential and instantiation. At the same time, I use these case studies to reveal where rhetorical narrative theory can adapt in order to more meaningfully account for choice-based video game narratives within its default narrative paradigm. Ultimately, I argue that bringing rhetorical narrative and choice-based video games into conversation with one another illuminates intriguing new directions of inquiry for both rhetorical narrative theory and video game narrative scholarship more broadly.
