On generalizations of skew quasi-cyclic codes

        Sumeyra Bedir,Fatmanur Gursoy,Irfan Siap 대한수학회 2020 대한수학회보 Vol.57 No.2

In the last two decades, codes over noncommutative rings have been one of the main trends in coding theory. Due to the fact that noncommutativity brings many challenging problems in its nature, still there are many open problems to be addressed. In 2015, generator polynomial matrices and parity-check polynomial matrices of generalized quasi-cyclic (GQC) codes were investigated by Matsui. We extended these results to the noncommutative case. Exploring the dual structures of skew constacyclic codes, we present a direct way of obtaining parity-check polynomials of skew multi-twisted codes in terms of their generators. Further, we lay out the algebraic structures of skew multi-polycyclic codes and their duals and we give some examples to illustrate the theorems.

Change of attitude toward culture: pre- and post- expatriation experiences of managers

Sumeyra Alpaslan Danisman 한국사회과학협의회 2014 Korean Social Science Journal Vol.41 No.2

Cultural adjustment and intercultural effectiveness strongly influence interna-tional managerial issues, such as organizational success in a local firm, assignment com-pletion, cost of expatriation, and repatriation. Therefore, employees assigned to work inanother country need to prepare by learning about that country’s culture before expatria-tion. Much research has been conducted in the last few decades on the role of culture inexpatriation. This study examines how the attitude of expatriate managers toward theimportance of culture changes between the pre- and post-expatriation periods. This study isstructured as a two-step investigation: (1) pre-expatriation cultural preparation and (2)thoughts on the importance of culture after expatriation. The research sample was SouthKorean expatriate managers working in Turkey or the US. All participants were reached bythe trace method, and the interview data were analyzed in QSR NVivo software withcontent analysis. The results showed that expatriate managers’ attitude toward theimportance of culture changed as a result of expatriation. Pre-expatriation, some partici-pants did not prepare for the new culture. However, after the expatriation experience, allagreed that an understanding of the host culture was important during the assignment. Anoverseas experience allowed participants to understand the significant role played byculture in their adjustment to the new environment.

Effects of pain catastrophizing and anxiety on analgesic use after surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars

Altan, Ahmet,Akkoc, Sumeyra,Erdil, Aras,Colak, Sefa,Demir, Osman,Altan, Halenur The Korean Dental Society of Anesthsiology 2019 Journal of Dental Anesthesia and Pain Medicine Vol.19 No.6

Background: In dentistry, pain is a factor that negatively affects treatments and drug use. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlations of the postoperative analgesic use with pain catastrophizing and anxiety in patients who underwent removal of an impacted mandibular third molar. Methods: We recruited 92 patients who underwent the extraction of impacted mandibular third molar. In this study, the Pederson index was used to preoperatively determine the difficulty of surgical extraction. Patients were asked to note the number of analgesics used for 7 postoperative days. Patients were divided into two groups based on the Pain Catastrophizing Scale: low and high score groups. State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-trait and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-state questionnaires were used to determine the anxiety levels of the patients. The obtained data were examined to evaluate the correlations of pain catastrophizing and anxiety with the postoperative analgesic use. Results: In this study, 92 patients, including 60 women and 32 men, were recruited. The analgesic use was higher in women than in men but with no significant difference (P > 0.05). Pain Catastrophizing Scale scores were higher in women than in men but with no significant difference (P > 0.05). The analgesic use was higher in patients with high pain catastrophizing than in those with low pain catastrophizing but with no significant difference (P > 0.05). State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-trait scores were higher in women than in men but with no significant difference. However, state-Trait Anxiety Inventory-state scores were significantly higher in women than in men (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The postoperative analgesic use may be higher in patients who catastrophize pain than in others. Knowing the patient's catastrophic characteristics preoperatively would contribute to successful pain management and appropriate drug selection.

Dietary inflammatory index is associated with serum C-reactive protein and protein energy wasting in hemodialysis patients

        Mevlude Kizil,M. Merve Tengilimoglu-Metin,Damla Gumus,Sumeyra Sevim,?nci Turkoglu,Fahri Mandiroglu 대한지역사회영양학회 2016 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.10 No.4

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Malnutrition and inflammation are reported as the most powerful predictors of mortality and morbidity in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Diet has a key role in modulating inflammation and dietary inflammatory index (DII) is a new tool for assessment of inflammatory potential of diet. The aim of this study was to evaluate the application of DII on dietary intake of HD patients and examine the associations between DII and malnutrition-inflammation markers. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A total of 105 subjects were recruited for this cross-sectional study. Anthropometric measurements, 3-day dietary recall, and pre-dialysis biochemical parameters were recorded for each subject. Subjective global assessment (SGA), which was previously validated for HD patients, and malnutrition inflammation score (MIS) were used for the diagnosis of protein energy wasting. DII was calculated according to average of 3-day dietary recall data. RESULTS: DII showed significant correlation with reliable malnutrition and inflammation indicators including SGA (r = 0.28, P < 0.01), MIS (r = 0.28, P < 0.01), and serum C-reactive protein (CRP) (r = 0.35, P < 0.001) in HD patients. When the study population was divided into three subgroups according to their DII score, significant increasing trends across the tertiles of DII were observed for SGA score (P = 0.035), serum CRP (P = 0.001), dietary energy (P < 0.001), total fat (P < 0.001), saturated fatty acids (P < 0.001), polyunsaturated fatty acids (P = 0.006), and omega-6 fatty acids (P = 0.01) intakes. CONCLUSION: This study shows that DII is a good tool for assessing the overall inflammatory potential of diet in HD patients.

Surgical indicators for the operative treatment of acute mechanical intestinal obstruction due to adhesions

        Tunc Eren,Salih Boluk,Baris Bayraktar,Ibrahim Ali Ozemir,Sumeyra Yildirim Boluk,Ercument Tombalak,Orhan Alimoglu 대한외과학회 2015 Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research(ASRT) Vol.88 No.6

Purpose: Our aim was to investigate the predictive factors indicating strangulation, and the requirement for surgery in patients with acute mechanical intestinal obstruction due to adhesions. Methods: This study retrospectively evaluated the records of patients with adhesive acute mechanical intestinal obstruction. The surgical treatment (group S), conservative treatment (group C), intraoperative bowel ischemia (group I), and intraoperative adhesion only (group A) groups were statistically evaluated according to the diagnostic and surgical parameters. Results: The study group of 252 patients consisted of 113 women (44.8%), and 139 men (55.2%). The mean age was 62.79 ± 18.08 years (range, 20?98 years). Group S consisted of 50 patients (19.8%), and 202 (80.2%) were in group C. Group I consisted of 19 patients (38%), where as 31 (62%) were in group A. In group S, the prehospital symptomatic period was longer, incidence of fever was increased, and elevated CRP levels were significant (P < 0.05). Plain abdominal radiography, and abdominal computerized tomography were significantly sensitive for strangulation (P < 0.05). The elderly were more prone to strangulation (P < 0.05). Fever, rebound tendernes, and urea & creatinine levels were significantly higher in the presence of strangulation (P < 0.05, P < 0.05, and P < 0.05, consecutively). Conclusion: Fever, rebound tenderness, urea & creatinine levels, plain abdominal radiography, and abdominal computerized tomography images were important indicators of bowel ischemia. Longer prehospital symptomatic period was related with a tendency for surgical treatment, and the elderly were more prone to strangulation. CRP detection was considered to be useful for the decision of surgery, but not significantly predictive for strangulation.

      • Impact of Prognostic Factors on Survival Rates in Patients with Ovarian Carcinoma

Arikan, Sevim Kalsen,Kasap, Burcu,Yetimalar, Hakan,Yildiz, Askin,Sakarya, Derya Kilic,Tatar, Sumeyra Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.15

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to invesitigate the impact of significant clinico-pathological prognostic factors on survival rates and to identify factors predictive of poor outcome in patients with ovarian carcinoma. Materials and Methods: A retrospective chart review of 74 women with pathologically proven ovarian carcinoma who were treated between January 2006 and April 2011 was performed. Patients were investigated with respect to survival to find the possible effects of age, gravida, parity, menstruel condition, pre-operative Ca-125, treatment period, cytologic washings, presence of ascites, tumor histology, stage and grade, maximal tumor diameter, adjuvan chemotherapy and cytoreductive success. Also 55 ovarian carcinoma patients were investigated with respect to prognostic factors for early 2-year survival. Results: The two-year survival rate was 69% and the 5-year survival rate was 25.5% for the whole study population. Significant factors for 2-year survival were preoperative CA-125 level, malignant cytology and FIGO clinical stage. Significant factors for 5-year survival were age, preoperative CA-125 level, residual tumor, lymph node metastases, histologic type of tumor, malignant cytology and FIGO clinical stage. Logistic regression revealed that independent prognostic factors of 5-year survival were patient age, lymph node metastasis and malignant cytology. Conclusions: We consider quality registries with prospectively collected data to be one important tool in monitoring treatment effects in population-based cancer research.
