Background: This study investigated whether current smoking and a higher nicotine dependency were associated with chronic low back pain (LBP), lumbar related leg pain (sciatica) and/or radicular neuropathic pain. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 150 patients (mean age, 60.1 ± 13.1 yr). Demographic data, the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) neuropathic pain grade, STarT Back tool, and the Fagerström test were completed. A control group (n = 50) was recruited. Results: There was a significant difference between current smokers and nonsmokers in the chronic LBP group in the mean pain score (P = 0.025), total STarT Back score (P = 0.015), worst pain location (P = 0.020), most distal pain radiation (P = 0.042), and in the IASP neuropathic pain grade (P = 0.026). There was a significant difference in the mean Fagerström score between the four IASP neuropathic pain grades (P = 0.005). Current smoking yielded an odds ratio (OR) of 3.071 (P = 0.011) for developing chronic LBP and sciatica, and an OR of 4.028 (P = 0.002) for obtaining an IASP "definite/probable" neuropathic pain grade, for both cohorts. The likelihood for chronic LBP and sciatica increased by 40.9% (P = 0.007), while the likelihood for an IASP neuropathic grade of "definite/probable" increased by 50.8% (P = 0.002), for both cohorts, for every one unit increase in the Fagerström score. Conclusions: A current smoking status and higher nicotine dependence increase the odds for chronic LBP, sciatica and radicular neuropathic pain.

The present paper presents the study, realization and characterization of a micro-coil sandwiched using a relatively thick layer of magnetic material. The integration of this micro-coil with as a starting point a set of specifi cations, requires the following steps: Identifi cation and validation of geometric parameters for the calculation of electrical parameters. Losses dissipated as heat in these electronic systems are becoming a major concern for designers. This prompted to take into account the thermal design. The results obtained have allowed to realize a micro-coil micro square planar coil sandwiched shaped between two magnetic materials. Several carried measures focused on the inductance and resistance which are related to the frequency f , the module and phase of the impedance, and the gap g . The operation of these data is used to trace the evolution of theinductance value L s , the quality factor Q and the resistor R s as a function of frequency.

For the sake of reducing the size of the power converters for photovoltaic applications, the microelectronics industry knows a permanent race in order to reach out to integrated electronic components with high efficacy and low losses for different applications. This paper presents a detailed study for designing an integrated structure with a dual-layer inductor model associated with two layers of MPP Molypermaloy magnetic cores. This inductor is intended to a DC–DC boost converter for photovoltaic application purposes. With an input of 17 V, 220 V output and supports a maximum current of 7 A on an operating frequency of 500 kHz with an output ripple less than 0.8%. The research covered the impact of coil's conductor thickness on the inductance. The gap effect study reached to determine the optimum gap between coils permit for the better profiteering of the mutual inductance with low losses. The transmission lines method was used to determine the equivalent electrical circuit for the designed dual-layer inductor to investigate the losses due to the parasite-flowing currents, also, to validate the performance and the well operating of the inductor in the application. The study investigated the magnetic behaviour and current density in conductors by numerical simulation governed by Maxwell's equations and solved by fi nite element method. An algorithm has been associated with the converter to compensate all losses and ensure the stability of the output voltage. The designed inductor has an inductance of 14.2 μH and covering a volume of 10 mm× 10 mm × 2.07 mm .
