The effect of eight vitamin E homologues, i.e. α-, β-, γ-, and δ-tocopherol and α-, β-, γ, and δ-tocotrienol, on the inhibition of autoxidation of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) were investigated. The oxidation was carried out in the dark for 21 days at 50 °C and monitored by peroxide values (PV) and TBA values. The levels of the individual vitamin E homologues in CLA during storage were determined by HPLC. γ-Tocopherol exhibited the highest antioxidant activity among the homologues tested in this study when the antioxidant activities of the individual homologues in CLA were compared by PV. The order of antioxidant activity of eight homologues was γ-tocopherol > δ-tocopherol = δ-tocotrienol ≥ γ-tocotrienol > β-tocopherol = β-tocotrienol > α-tocopherol = α-tocotrienol. The degradation rates of α-tocopherol and α-tocotrienol were faster than those of the other homologues, whereas δ-tocopherol had the highest stability in CLA during storage. All homologues exhibited an antioxidant activity by inhibiting the formation of secondary oxidation products. It appears that α-tocotrienol and β-tocotrienol have significantly higher antioxidant activities for secondary oxidation in CLA than α-tocopherol and β-tocopherol. Meanwhile, the other homologues, namely γ-tocopherol, γ-tocotrienol, δ-tocopherol, and δ-tocotrienol, exhibited similar antioxidant activity for secondary oxidation in CLA.

The present study measured level of depression and related factors concerning the aged over 65-years-old(N=532) living at agriculture and fishing village in Koje city. Kyung-sang Namdo -within the servitude of 6 community health post- from July, 2000 to August, 2000. Examiner interviewed each aged, individually, and composed the questionnaires. The questionnaires include general identification informations(gender, age, educatton), number of lodging company and form, financial responsibility of domestic economy and the status, level of satisfaction on one's present standard of living, marital status, have someone to talk with, nurse to help, self-rating physical state, last 15 days and 3 months illness, smoking, drinking, and level of depression was measured by GDSSF-K, which consists 15-items. The depression prevalence of male aged(74.3%) was significantly lower than woman(84.4%). The results of multiple regression analysis suggest that age, level of satisfaction on one's present standard of living, and self-rating physical state are significantly related with male aged. That is, the more old, unsatisfied on one's present standard of living, and self-rating physical state is poor, the more depressed. The women aged depression level was related to education, level of satisfaction on one's present standard of living, self-rating physical state, and last 15 days illness. The women was more depressed when one's level of education is lower, more unsatisfied on present standard of living, rated one's physical state poorer, and was sick during last 15 days. The high depression prevalence of aged living at agriculture and fishing village suggests that a concrete and resonable solution is needed, and moreover, as the level depression is related with economical and physical problems, these factors must be in.
Synthesis and Applications of Dicationic Iodide Materials for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells
Nam, Heejin,Ko, Yohan,Kunnan, Sakeerali C.,Choi, Nam-Soon,Jun, Yongseok The Korean Electrochemical Society 2019 Journal of electrochemical science and technology Vol.10 No.2
Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have been receiving growing attentions as a potential alternative to order photovoltaic devices due to their high efficiency and low manufacturing cost. DSSCs are composed of a photosensitizing dye adsorbed on a mesoporous film of nanocrystalline $TiO_2$ as a photoelectrode, an electrolyte containing triiodide/iodide redox couple, and a platinized counter electrode. To improve photovoltaic properties of DSSCs, new dicationic salts based on ionic liquids were synthesized. Quite comparable efficiencies were obtained from electrolytes with new dicationic iodide salts. The best cell performance of 7.96% was obtained with dicationic salt of PBDMIDI.
Primary signet ring cell carcinoma of the appendix: a rare case report and our 18-year experience.
Ko, Yoon-Ho,Jung, Chan-Kwon,Oh, Soon-Nam,Kim, Tae-Hee,Won, Hye-Sung,Kang, Jin-Hyoung,Kim, Hyung-Jin,Kang, Won-Kyung,Oh, Seong-Taek,Hong, Young-Seon WJG Press 2008 WORLD JOURNAL OF GASTROENTEROLOGY Vol.14 No.37

Primary adenocarcinoma of the appendix is a rare malignancy that constitutes < 0.5% of all gastrointestinal neoplasms. Moreover, primary signet ring cell carcinoma of the appendix is an exceedingly rare entity. We have encountered 15 cases of primary appendiceal cancer among 3389 patients who underwent appendectomy over the past 18 years. In the present report, we describe a rare case of primary signet ring cell carcinoma of the appendix with ovarian metastases and unresectable peritoneal dissemination occurring in a 67-year-old female patient. She underwent appendectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy with a laparoscopy procedure. She then received palliative systemic chemotherapy with 12 cycles of oxaliplatin, 5-flurorouracil, and leucovorin (FOLFOX-4). The patient currently is well without progression of disease 12 mo after beginning chemotherapy.

Purpose

We developed a new workflow design which included results from both biochemical and targeted gene sequencing analysis interpreted comprehensively. We then conducted a pilot study to evaluate the benefit of this new approach in newborn screening (NBS) and demonstrated the efficiency of this workflow in detecting causative genetic variants.

Materials and Methods

Ten patients in Group 1 were diagnosed clinically using biochemical assays only, and 10 newborns in Group 2 were diagnosed with suspected inherited metabolic disease (IMD) in NBS. We applied NewbornDiscovery (SD Genomics), an integrated workflow design that encompasses analyte-phenotype-gene, single nucleotide variant/small insertion and deletion/copy number variation analyses along with clinical interpretation of genetic variants related to each participant's condition.

Results

A molecular genetic diagnosis was established in 95% (19/20) of individuals. In Group 1, 13 and 7 of 20 alleles were classified as pathogenic and likely pathogenic, respectively. In Group 2, 11 and 6 of 17 alleles with identified causative variants were pathogenic and likely pathogenic, respectively. There were no variants of uncertain significance. For each individual, the NewbornDiscovery and biochemical analysis results reached 100% concordance, since the single newborn testing negative for causative genetic variant in Group 2 showed a benign clinical course.

Conclusion

This integrated diagnostic workflow resulted in a high yield. This approach not only enabled early confirmation of specific IMD, but also detected conditions not included in the current NBS.
