Evolutionary concepts in the functional biotics arena: a mini-review

        Basavaprabhu H. Nataraj,Sonu K. Shivanna,Prabha Rao,Ravinder Nagpal,Pradip V. Behare 한국식품과학회 2021 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.30 No.4

Over the years, the attempts to elucidate the roleof beneficial microorganisms in shaping human health arebecoming fairly apparent. The functional impact conferredby such microbes is not only transmitted by viable cells ortheir metabolites but also through non-viable cells. Extensive research to unveil the protective action of suchwonder bugs has resulted in categorizing the beneficialmicroflora and their bioactive metabolites into a variety offunctional biotic concepts based on their intended applicationsin various forms. In the modern era, these are oftentermed as probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, postbiotics,next-generation probiotics, psychobiotics, oncobiotics, pharmabiotics, and metabiotics. Currently, the concept oftraditional probiotics is being widened to include microbesbeyond lactic acid bacteria. Indeed, this diversification hasbroadened the functional food portfolio from food topharmaceuticals. In this context, the present review aims tosummarize the existing biotic concepts and their differencesthereof.
