Multi-Discursive Ethnography and the Re-Narration of Chinese Heritage: Stories about the Yueju Opera Performance at the Heavenly Queen Palace of Quzhou

( Song Hou ),( Zongjie Wu ),( Huimei Liu ) 성균관대학교 동아시아학술원 2016 Sungkyun Journal of East Asian Studies Vol.16 No.2

Recognizing the discursive nature of heritage and its crisis of representation, this paper proposes to use what we call “multi-discursive ethnography” as a methodological and writing strategy to renarrate and thereby remake heritage in contemporary China. Multi-discursive ethnography, as its name indicates, is a form of ethnography that encompasses multiple discourses of a subject matter and strives to facilitate dialogue among them. Scholars are required to conduct fieldwork and other research procedures to expose them to varied discourses, and then write up an ethnography by assembling and weaving together those discourses they find useful for representing dialogue and diversity. As a case study, we present a multi-discursive ethnography of the Heavenly Queen Palace (Tianhou Gong 天后宮) in Quzhou (衢州), Zhejiang Province, focusing chiefly on the Yueju opera (越劇) performances that many local people attend. Stories are told there, allowing us to rethink and reconstruct heritage beyond disciplinary knowledge and universalized meaning-making. This multi-discursive ethnography, we argue, problematizes globalized heritage discourses and invites a diverse and dialogical reconceptualization of a local past in the present by foregrounding vernacular voices and deep cultural discourse, especially with regard to li (禮), which is considered to be “the determinate fabric of Chinese culture, and…the language through which the culture is expressed” (Hall and Ames 1998, 269).

      • The Investor Protection Regime of the Financial Investment Services and Capital Markets Act of Korea

( Eun Hou Song ),( Dong Wuk An ) 고려대학교 법학연구원 2010 Korea University Law Review Vol.7 No.-

The Korean financial market had long been regulated by several dispersed laws. However, with the enactment of the Financial Investment Services and Capital Markets Act (the FISCMA) in 2009, the regulatory principles have been partly integrated. As one of the central elements in the FISCMA is the reinforced investor protection, it is necessary to review the changes and discuss suggestions for improvement. Thus the article primarily focuses on the three tenets of investor protection: duty to explain, principle of suitability, and methods to prevent conflicts of interest. In reviewing these subjects, the article explains the new changes in the FISCMA, which were mainly brought on by the transformation from institutional to functional regulations of financial businesses. Also, for comparison it notes the similar regulations existing in the U.S laws. The obstacles that still remain in FISCMA concerning investor protection are discussed as well. Regarding conflicts of interest, the FISCMA presents such a wide range of regulatory measures as imposing the duty of good faith, prohibiting the specific conduct of business, and requiring financial business entities to establish the internal control system as well as the Chinese wall. Even though the changes found in the FISCMA are appropriate concerning the broadening scope of financial businesses, it is recommended that the compensation for damages to investors and the principles of fiduciary duty should be further complemented. The authors hope this article contributes to expanding our knowledge of the new legislation governing the Korean financial market.

Progressive Collapse Resistance of RC Frames under a Side Column Removal Scenario: The Mechanism Explained

Hou, Jian,Song, Li Korea Concrete Institute 2016 International Journal of Concrete Structures and M Vol.10 No.2

Progressive collapse resistance of RC buildings can be analyzed by considering column loss scenarios. Using finite element analysis and a static test, the progressive collapse process of a RC frame under monotonic vertical displacement of a side column was investigated, simulating a column removal scenario. A single-story 1/3 scale RC frame that comprises two spans and two bays was tested and computed, and downward displacement of a side column was placed until failure. Our study offers insight into the failure modes and progressive collapse behavior of a RC frame. It has been noted that the damage of structural members (beams and slabs) occurs only in the bay where the removal side column is located. Greater catenary action and tensile membrane action are mobilized in the frame beams and slabs, respectively, at large deformations, but they mainly happen in the direction where the frame beams and slabs are laterally restrained. Based on the experimental and computational results, the mechanism of progressive collapse resistance of RC frames at different stages was discussed further. With large deformations, a simplified calculation method for catenary action and tensile membrane action is proposed.

Investigation on the application of industrial grade MgO in the alkaline peroxide bleaching of poplar CTMP

        Song Han,Wei Liu,Shaoshuai Wu,Zhaoxia Long,Qingxi Hou 한국공업화학회 2015 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.21 No.1

Effects of four different kinds of industrial grade MgO as one alkali source in the alkaline peroxidebleaching of poplar chemi-thermomechanical pulp (CTMP) were investigated. The particle size andactivity of the MgO played the most important role in the improvement of optical and strengthproperties of the bleached CTMP. At a 25% substitution percentage of MgO for NaOH, a 77.4%ISObrightness and the optimal tensile index of the bleached CTMP could be obtained. When industrial gradeMgO was applied, appropriate increase in Na2SiO3 dosage and pulp consistency could improve thebrightness and strength properties of the bleached CTMP.

RESEARCH PAPERS : The Effect of Swirling Flow on Elutriation in a Vortexing Fluidized Bed

(Hou Peng Wan),(Chien Song Chyang) 한국화학공학회 1999 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.16 No.5

The elutriation of fine particles in a vortexing fluidized bed (VFB) was studied by a batch and binary system. The diameter of the coarse particles was 545㎛, and the diameter of the fine particles for the elutriation test was 81, 97, 115, 137, 163, and 193㎛, respectively. It was found that the swirling flow caused by the secondary air injection is the dominating factor to influence the elutriation rates. The effect of primary air velocity, swirling flow, injection angle of secondary air nozzle, and diameter of fine particles on the elutriation rate constant was also studied. The Taguchi experimental method and Regular analysis are used to identify the effects of various operating variables. A correlation was developed to estimate the specific elutriation rate constant (K^*_∞) in the vortexing fluidized bed. The specific elutriation rate constant (K^*_∞) was found to be a function of the primary air velocity, the diameter of fine particles, the secondary air velocity, and the height of secondary air injection.

Fatigue Assessment Model of Corroded RC Beams Strengthened with Prestressed CFRP Sheets

Song, Li,Hou, Jian Korea Concrete Institute 2017 International Journal of Concrete Structures and M Vol.11 No.2

This paper presents a fatigue assessment model that was developed for corroded reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened using prestressed carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets. The proposed model considers the fatigue properties of the constituent materials as well as the section equilibrium. The model provides a rational approach that can be used to explicitly assess the failure mode, fatigue life, fatigue strength, stiffness, and post-fatigue ultimate capacity of corroded beams strengthened with prestressed CFRP. A parametric analysis demonstrated that the controlling factor for the fatigue behavior of the beams is the fatigue behavior of the corroded steel bars. Strengthening with one layer of non-prestressed CFRP sheets restored the fatigue behavior of beams with rebar at a low corrosion degree to the level of the uncorroded beams, while strengthening with 20- and 30%-prestressed CFRP sheets restored the fatigue behavior of the beams with medium and high corrosion degrees, respectively, to the values of the uncorroded beams. Under cyclic fatigue loading, the factors for the strengthening design of corroded RC beams fall in the order of stiffness, fatigue life, fatigue strength, and ultimate capacity.

      • Expression of bcl-2 and p53 in Induction of Esophageal Cancer Cell Apoptosis by ECRG2 in Combination with Cisplatin

        Song, Hai-Yan,Deng, Xiao-Hui,Yuan, Guo-Yan,Hou, Xin-Fang,Zhu, Zhen-Dong,Zhou, Li,Ren, Ming-Xin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.3

Aim: To investigate the mechanisms of induction of apoptosis of esophageal cancer cells by esophageal cancer-related gene 2 (ECRG2) in combination with cisplatin (DDP). Methods: Hoechest staining was performed to analyze the effects of single ECRG2 and ECRG2 in combination with DDP on apoptosis of EC9706 cells. The expression levels of p53 and bcl-2 mRNA and protein were determined by RT-PCR and Western blotting, respectively. Results: The number of apoptotic cells after the treatment with ECRG2 in combination with DDP for 24 hours was more than that after the treatment with single ECRG2. RT-PCR and Western blotting showed that the expression levels of bcl-2 mRNA and protein were both down-regulated, while p53 mRNA and protein were both up-regulated in the cells treated with ECRG2 in combination with DDP compared with those given ECRG2 alone. Conclusion: ECRG2 in combination with DDP can enhance the apoptosis of EC9706 cells, possibly by down-regulating bcl-2 expression and up-regulating p53.

Identification, fine mapping and characterization of Rht-dp, a recessive wheat dwarfing (reduced height) gene derived from Triticum polonicum

        Hou-Yang Kang,Li-Juan Lin,Zhi-Jian Song,Jing-Ya Yuan,Mei-Yu Zhong,Hai-Qin Zhang,Xing Fan,Li-Na Sha,Yi Wang,Li-Li Xu,Jian Zeng,Yong-Hong Zhou 한국유전학회 2012 Genes & Genomics Vol.34 No.5

Semi-dwarfism is an agronomically important trait in breeding for resistance to damage by wind and rain (lodging resistance)and for stable high yields. Dwarf Polish wheat (Triticum polonicum L., 2n = 4x = 28, AABB AS304) is a potential donor of dwarfing and other traits for common wheat improvement. A genetic analysis using an F2 population derived from a cross of AS304 and tall cultivar AS302 and derived F2:3 lines indicated that AS304 carries a recessive dwarfing gene, temporarily designated Rht-dp. Molecular markers and bulked segregant analysis were used to characterize and map the gene. Eight polymorphic SSR markers (Xwmc511, Xgwm495, Xgwm 113, Xgwm192, Xgpw7026, Xgpw3017, Xgpw1108 and Xgpw7521) on chromosome arm 4BS and two AFLP markers (M8/E5 and M4/E3) were mapped relative to the dwarfing locus. The closest linked markers, Xgpw3017 and M8/E5 at 0.5 and 3.5 cM, respectively, from Rht-dp will enable its marker assisted transfer to wheat breeding populations. Allelic tests indicated that Rht-dp was allelic to Rht-B1b; hence it may be an alternative allele at the Rht-B1 locus.

Synthesis and Dyeing Properties of New Bi-heterocyclic Disperse Dyes Containing Pyridone Group for Polyester Fabrics

        Xiyu Song,Aiqin Hou,Kongliang Xie,Tingli Hu 한국섬유공학회 2020 Fibers and polymers Vol.21 No.8

A series of novel bi-heterocyclic disperse dyes containing N-ethyl-3-cyano-4-methyl-6-hydroxy-2-pyridine groupwere synthesized. The structures of the bi-heterocyclic dyes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR), UV-vis spectrophotometry, and elemental analysis. Thedistinct spectral behavior and solvatochromic effect of the dyes were discussed. The dyeing properties of the dyes forpolyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabric were investigated. Novel bi-heterocyclic disperse dyes had higher molar absorptioncoefficient, good color strength, and excellent fastness properties, especially light fastness. The bi-heterocyclic disperse dyeshave potential research value in the development of high light resistant dyes and functional dyes.
