Vol.6 No.-

The aim of this study is to find out the relationships between the microstructures of SM45C(AIS11045) steel and fatigue crack propagation behaviour. Three microstructures such as (ⅰ) as received (fully annealed). (ⅱ) water quenched and tempered, and (ⅲ) ail quenched and tempered were used for fundamental mechanical testing and fatigue crack proagation test. The microstructures of (ⅱ) and (ⅲ) showed superior in tensile strength to (ⅰ). Resistance against fatigue crack propagation was higher in structure (ⅰ), while tensile properties were better in structures(ⅱ) and (ⅲ). It is believed due to that the enhancement of roughness of fracture surface obsered in structure (ⅰ) increases ?Kth and lowers fatigue crack growth rate. However it does not necessarily mean the quenched and tempered structures (ⅱ) and (ⅲ) are undesirable for the engineering component because fatigue limit in low cycle test appears usually higher in the microstructures of higher strength.

Vol.36 No.-

To understand the changes of the species composition and the morphology of fouling animals community, a series of studies were carried out at the intake of Wolso˘ng Nuclear Power Plant and So˘ch'o˘n Thermal Power Plant from October, 1984 to June 1985. As a result, 70 species, 43 families, 17 orders, ten classes in eight phyla at Wolso˘ng, and 62 species, 48 families, 20 orders, 14 classes in ten phyla at So˘ch'o˘n were observed during the studv period. Some outstanding group of animals were Wytilus, Balanus and solitary ascidians at Wolso˘ng, and Chlamys, sea anemones, compound ascidians and tubes of amphipods at So˘ch'o˘n. The changes cf species were appeared to be early at Wolso˘ng, eastern coast of Korea. Therefore, it seems the last dominant species of fouling animals is Mytilus edulis.

Vol.1 No.-

The qualitative and quantitative analyses of macrozoobenthic communities sampled from Onsan bay of the eastern coast of Korea were conducted, in this study, to investigate the status of marine pollution. In each survey site, judging from the results of the combined κ-dominance curve for species biomass and individual numbers, it may be assessed that Chundo island, located in innerside of Onsan bay, was in the state of polluted condition both in the summar and winter seasons; on the other hand, Tangsa, the control site of this study, was in the state of unpolluted condition. The species composition of the Chundo island, in addition, was rather lower than that of the Tangsa in richness and showed critical differences with the control site in the number of molluscan species collected as dead shell(16 spp. from Chundo island; 2spp. from Tangsa respectively) It is inferred that the resultant macrozoobenthic community structure of the Onsan bay was related to the high concentration of heavy metals in seawater and bioaccumulation, attributed to the influx of the heavy metals from the surroundings, the nonferrous and the petrochemical industrial complex.

New Records of Cold-Water Corals from Korea

Song, Jun-Im The Korean Society of Systematic Zoology 2016 Animal Systematics, Evolution and Diversity Vol.32 No.3

Two cold-water coral taxa, Octocorallia in the class Anthozoa and Stylasteridae in the class Hydrozoa, were identified. Deep-water samples were collected in fishing nets at depths ranging between 20 and 200 m along the coasts of the East Sea in Korea from 1976 to 1993. The two species found in this study represent new records for Korea: Paragorgia arborea (Linnaeus, 1758) in the class Anthozoa, and Stylaster profundiporus Broch, 1936 in the class Hydrozoa. Two families, Paragorgiidae and Stylasteridae, are also newly recorded in Korea. Furthermore, the species name of another cold-water gorgonian species, Primnoa pacifica (Kinoshita, 1907) in the family Primnoidae, is amended in this report. The two newly recorded cold-water coral species from Korea are described in detail based on their morphological characteristics. Paragorgia arborea is characterized by its growth form, medulla and cortex, zooid dimorphism, canal system, and spicule composition. Stylaster profundiporus is distinguished by its external skeletal characteristics, such as the coordination of dactylopores and gastropores, presence or absence of gastrostyles and dactylostyles, cyclosystem orientation, ampullar position, gastropore tube shape, and coenosteal texture.

      • Geographic Variation of Granulilittorina exigua (Littorinidae, Gastropoda) in Korea Based on the Mitochondrial Cytochrome b Gene Sequence

Song, Jun-Im,Suh, Jae-Hwa,Kim, Sook-Jung The Korean Society for Integrative Biology 2000 Korean journal of biological sciences Vol.4 No.3

Partial sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene was analyzed to investigate genetic variation from 10 geographic populations of Granulilittorina exigua in Korea. The sequence of 282 base pairs was determined by PCR-directed silver sequencing method. The sequences of two species within the genus Littorina reserved in NIH blast search were utilized to determine geographic variations of species referred. The levels of mtDNA sequence differences were 0.00-2.54% within populations and 0.71-4.43% between populations. There were four amino acid differences between representative species of the genera Granulilittorina and Littorina, but no differences within populations of the genus Granulilittorina. The UPGMA and the N-J trees based on Tamura-Nei genetic distance matrix were constructed, which showed that the genus Granulilittorina was divided into three groups such as eastern (even exception for Tokdo population), southern, and western regional populations. The degrees of genetic divergence within populations of each group were p=0.021, p=0.019, and p=0.018, respectively. The divergence between the eastern and southern populations was p=0.032, showing closer relationship than with the western populations (p=0.052). Based on the diverged time estimation, the eastern and southern populations of Granulilittorina exigua in Korea diverged from the western populations about 2.1 MYBP, and the eastern and southern populations diverged from each other about 1.3 MYBP.

      • Systematic Relationships among Species of the Genus Dendronephthya (Alcyonacea: Octocorallia; Anthozoa) Based on RAPD Analysis

Song, Jun-Im,Lee, Young-Ja The Korean Society for Integrative Biology 2000 Korean journal of biological sciences Vol.4 No.1

The genus Dendronephthya, generally known as soft corals, is reported as an abundant and variable taxon. They mostly distribute in warmer waters of the Undo-Pacific Ocean region including Korea. In spite of their abundance and ecological importance as habitats of marine organisms, there are difficulties in the study of their identification and systematics because they have morphological variabilities and limited taxonomec characters. To resolve the problems, we attempted to elucidate the genetic relationships in the genus Dendronephthya by using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. This study was based on eight dendronephthian species and one Alcyoniidae species, Alcyonium gracillimum, as an outgroup. The results from all analysis suggest that they could be classified into four groups by the growth form and the anthocodial grades as follows: the first one,D. putteri and D. suensoni with the divaricate form and VI grade; the second one,D. sp.1 and D. sp.2 with the divaricate form and III or IV grade; the third one, D. gigantea and D. aurea being closer than D. spinifera with the glomerate form and III grade; the last one, D. castanea related to D. gigantea rather than D. putteri with the umbellate form and IV grade. Moreover, the divaricate form was separated from the group of the glomerate and umbellate form. At the intraspecies level, the types of the D. castanea, D. gigantea and D. spinifera were separated depending on the feature of spicules in the polyp head, and the coloration could not influence genetic variation. From this study, we can confirm that their morphological characters are compatible with the genetic variation, also RAPD analysis is a very useful method for resolving the systematic relationships of den-deonephthians.
