      • Resveratrol Exerts Differential Effects in Vitro and in Vivo against Ovarian Cancer Cells

Stakleff, Kimberly Sloan,Sloan, Tricia,Blanco, Denise,Marcanthony, Sharon,Booth, Tristan D.,Bishayee, Anupam Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.4

Epithelial ovarian cancer represents the most lethal gynecological cancer, and the high mortality rate makes this malignancy a major health concern. Poor prognosis results from an inability to detect ovarian cancers at an early, curable stage, as well as from the lack of an effective therapy. Thus, effective and novel strategies for prevention and treatment with non-toxic agents merit serious consideration. Resveratrol, obtained from grapes, berries, peanuts and red wine, has been shown to have a potent growth-inhibitory effect against various human cancer cells as well as in in vivo preclinical cancer models. The objective here was to evaluate potential antitumor effects of resveratrol in both in vitro and in vivo NuTu-19 ovarian cancer models. In vitro an invasion assay was performed. After 48 h, the numbers of viable cells that invaded the extracellular matrix layer were reduced by 94% with resveratrol in comparison to control. For the in vivo anti-tumor assessment, 10 rats were injected with NuTu-19 cells into the ovarian bursa. Thereafter, half were provided with a diet mixed with a dose of 100 mg resveratrol/kg body weight/day for 28 days. Following sacrifice, anticancer effects were assessed by histological evaluation of ovarian as well as surrounding tissues, and immunohistochemical detection of cell proliferation and apoptosis, but there were no observable differences between the control and resveratrol-treated groups for any of the biological endpoints. While resveratrol is effective in suppressing the in vitro cellular invasion of NuTu-19 ovarian cancer cells, these effects do not appear to impact on in vivo NuTu-19 ovarian cancers in rats.

Rebuilding Confucian Ideology: Ethnicity and Biography in the Appropriation of Tradition

2014 Sungkyun Journal of East Asian Studies Vol.14 No.2

The imperial family of the Jin state (1115-1234) in northern China identified itself as "Jurchen," ethnically distinct from the majority of its empire's subjects. The veneration of Confucius, his descendants and affiliated sacred sites, and the classical scholarly and artistic culture associated with him formed central elements of the ideology on which the Jin state came to rely for legitimation. This ideology also fused the Jurchen national mythology, sacred geography, and writing system with Chinese classical elements and literati cultural forms, as embodied in multilingual stele inscriptions. The role of Chinese officials in legitimizing the Jin is exemplified by Dang Huaiying (1134-1211), who produced literary and calligraphic works linking Jin rule both to Chinese antiquity and Jurchen claims of exceptionality. These approaches to legitimation were drawn on by later states in China, with Confucius's descendant Kong Yuancuo cooperating with both the Jin and Yuan courts.

Pilot study of machine learning in the task of distinguishing high and low-grade pediatric hydronephrosis on ultrasound

        Matthew Sloan,Hui Li,Hernan A. Lescay,Clark Judge,Li Lan,Parviz Hajiyev,Maryellen L. Giger,Mohan S. Gundeti 2023 Investigative and Clinical Urology Vol.64 No.6

Purpose: Hydronephrosis is a common pediatric urological condition, characterized by dilation of the renal collecting system. Accurate identification of the severity of hydronephrosis is crucial in clinical management, as high-grade hydronephrosis can cause significant damage to the kidney. In this pilot study, we demonstrate the feasibility of machine learning in differentiating between high and low-grade hydronephrosis in pediatric patients. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 592 images from 90 unique patients ages 0–8 years diagnosed with hydronephrosis at the University of Chicago’s Pediatric Urology Clinic. The study included 74 high-grade hydronephrosis (145 images) and 227 low-grade hydronephrosis (447 images). Patients were excluded if they had less than 2 studies prior to surgical intervention or had structural abnormalities. We developed a radiomic-based artificial intelligence algorithm incorporating computerized texture analysis and machine learning (support-vector machine) to yield a predictor of hydronephrosis grade. Results: Receiver operating characteristic analysis of the classifier output yielded an area under the curve value of 0.86 (95% CI 0.81–0.92) in the task of distinguishing between low and high-grade hydronephrosis using a five-fold cross-validation by kidney. In addition, a Mann–Kendall trend test between computer output and clinical hydronephrosis grade yielded a statistically significant upward trend (p<0.001). Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate the potential of machine learning in the differentiation between low and high-grade hydronephrosis. Further studies are warranted to validate our findings and their generalizability for use in clinical practice as a means to predict clinical outcomes and the resolution of hydronephrosis.

        Ethnography, Environment, and Empire

Vol.55 No.-

Scholarship has generally treated the Jin empire (1115-1235) as a cohesive, integrated polity defined ethnically by its “Jurchen” rulers and delineated foremost by its southern boundary with the “native” Song dynasty. This study adds complexity to our understanding of the Jin through an examination of the travel writing of Hong Hao and Wang Ji, officials of the Song and Jin respectively who journeyed to the Jin northeastern frontier. Each text displays characteristics identified in modern imperial travel writing: Hong’s foreign account seeks and taxonomizes information to serve the interests of his own empire, while Wang’s domestic narrative negates the frontier as a zone of contact where difference is encountered and indeed expected. Examination of both texts suggests that studies of imperial and colonial contexts may benefit from greater attention to the dynamics between empires, complicating the prevailing dichotomization of “colonizer” and “colonized.”

Attitudes Toward the Northeast Frontier in the Travel Diaries of the Jin Dynasty Literati-Official Wang Ji(1128-1194)

Vol.0 No.41

Contemporary studies of European travel literature have done much to illuminate the complex role of this genre in the process of empire, a role particularly conspicuous in writing about frontiers. Scholarship on Chinese literature has meanwhile described the emergence of travel writing in the Southern Song dynasty(1127-1279) as a genre allowing nuanced personal expression. These latter studies have, however, foregrounded formalistic and aesthetic concerns while evading ideological considerations. Through examination of the travel diaries of Wang Ji(1128-1194), a literati-official serving the Jin state(1115-1234), chief rival to the Southern Song, study provides a more complete understanding, methodologically and geographically, of the development of Chinese travel writing as a genre. Wang’s accounts of his journeys on the Jin northeastern frontier demonstrate that the development of travel writing as a form of personal expression was not in fact a product of the Southern Song cultural context. His writing was also intimately connected with the process of imperial expansion, in a manner contrasting markedly with the frontier accounts of modern European travelers. It functioned ideologically not to legitimize expansion into the frontier from which he wrote, but to deny the importance of the frontier to the Jin empire and assert the centrality of the metropole.

Confucian Pilgrimage in Late Imperial and Republican China

2017 Sungkyun Journal of East Asian Studies Vol.17 No.2

Known as the home of Confucius, Qufu represented a sacred space eliciting profound affective, intellectual, and performative responses from travelers. In contrast to the broad appeal of sacred mountains, Qufu specifically attracted educated elites. These pilgrims were familiar with and committed to the Confucian textual canon, yet their experience of Qufu’s sacred character was primarily through its physical locations, structures, and relics. Through travelogues and gazetteers, the continuing role of the Kong family as guides, and the influence of the space itself, norms of practicing and recounting the pilgrimage formed in the late Ming prefigured and shaped accounts through the Republican period by an expanding body of pilgrims including elite women, Western missionaries, and modern tourists. The late imperial status of Qufu as a sacred site laid the foundation for the tourism, commercialization, and environmental protection observed there during the Republican period.
