Empirical Evidence of AMT Practices and Sustainable Environmental Initiatives in Malaysian Automotive SMEs

Siti Zawiah Md Dawal,Farzad Tahriri,Yap Hwa Jen,Keith Case,Nguyen Huu Tho,Aliq Zuhdi,Maryam Mousavi,Atefeh Amindoust,Novita Sakundarini 한국정밀공학회 2015 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol. No.

This paper presents significant empirical evidence on the relationship between Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT) practices and sustainable environmental initiatives with the manufacturing capabilities of automotive SMEs in Malaysia. A cross-sectional survey is adopted in this study, which involves 83 Malaysian automotive SMEs. Two hypotheses are proposed in this study, i.e. Hypothesis 1: There are positive effects of AMT practices on the manufacturing capabilities of SMEs and Hypothesis 2: There are positive effects of sustainable environmental initiatives on the manufacturing capabilities of SMEs. The results obtained from the pairwise correlation analysis indicate that both AMT practices and sustainable environmental initiatives have positive effects on manufacturing capabilities, which support both hypotheses. In addition, it is found that 50% of the SMEs implement AMT for flexibility and cost reduction in the past five years. It is also found that more than 80% sustainable practices are adopted in most of the SMEs with the exception of Life Cycle Assessment. Based on the findings, there is a need to move forward into the hybrid approach, which will consider both AMT practices and environmental initiatives to ensure that SMEs remain competitive and become the world player in the automotive industry.

      • Influencing Factors of driver’s habits and behavior: Comparison between young and ageing populations

Nurul Izzah Abd Rahman,Siti Zawiah Md Dawal,Nukman Yusoff 대한인간공학회 2021 대한인간공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2021 No.11

Objective: The main aim of this study is to investigate the significant factors influencing driver’s habits and behavior across age groups. Background: As ageing population is increasing rapidly, various age ranges of drivers on the roads require crucial awareness to better educate, manage, and restrain road behaviors. Driving is a complex task in ergonomics perspective that involves human, vehicle and environment. These factors have either advantageous or adverse impact on driving performance. It is crucial to identify and specify requirements necessary for a safe and efficient conduct of driving task. For changes in driving method or design to take place, both young and ageing drivers’ driving tasks need to be examined. Method: Survey on drivers was conducted on 182 drivers (both genders). Participants was divided into two age groups: below 50 years is Younger Group; 50 years and above is Ageing Group. Validated questionnaires used in the study were 1) Driving Habits Questionnaire (DHQ) to evaluate current driving status, general driving practices, driving exposure, dependence on other drivers, and driving difficulty, and 2) Driver Behavior Questionnaire (DBQ) to assess errors, ordinary violations, lapses and aggressive violations. Results: Most of the drivers had difficulty driving in the rain. More than half of the young and ageing drivers reported difficulty driving at night. Failure to notice that pedestrians were crossing was the most frequent error among young and ageing drivers. Conclusion: Age was significantly associated with driving preference during these conditions, rain, right turn in traffic, heavy traffic, rush hour and night driving and have effects on distractions, violations, errors, and lapse of drivers. Application: The presented outcome highlighted the need to design and perform real-time driving experiment observing the on-road driving performance adopting the main elements examined in this study into the task to be assigned.

      • Determination of the Significant Anthropometric Dimensions in Designing Pushchair for Children with Special Needs

Nazlin Hanie Abdullah,Mahadhir Mohd Ghazali,Mohd Azam Mohd Adnan,Siti Rahayu Hassan,Siti Zawiah Md Dawal,Ghazali Yusri,Nurul Izzah Abd Rahman 대한인간공학회 2021 대한인간공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2021 No.11

Objective: This study aims to design a pushchair to assist special children with their daily routines. Simultaneously, the detachable seat can be utilized as a carseat. Background: With innovation of various assistive technologies, disabled children have their right to live as normal children regardless of their limitations. The finding indicates mobility ranks as the most critical yet challenging activity. Often paediatric wheelchairs are required to compensate these difficulties. Besides, the Malaysian government mandates child carseat usage for all private vehicles to prevent child injuries while travelling. Due to their special need requirements, there are design mismatches with the existing carseat. This study utilized ergonomic principles in pushchair design by using anthropometric of disabled children population and Child Restraint System Design Guidelines by Malaysia Institute of Road Safety Research. Method: Participants were among 22 Malaysian physical disabled children (50% males and 50% females) with mean age of M=11.73 years, SD=14.057. Twenty anthropometric dimensions were selected for the analysis and design process. Standard professional Harpenden anthropometer, spreading caliper and measuring tape were used and each data taken is referred from Malaysia Standard, MS ISO 7250-1:2008. CATIA V5 was used for CAD modeling and CURA was used for the 3D printing model prototype. Results: The combination of the carseat and wheelchair into one assistive technology with ergonomic specification was innovated. The new design is based on the identification of user needs. The foldable pushchair frame and detachable seat can be used as seats, wheelchairs, carseats and even standing frames during physiotherapy sessions. Conclusion: Mobility was the primary issue that caregivers of disabled children confronted. With special needs requirements, the proposed design is more accessible for disabled children than the current design. Application: This finding is useful in designing sound pushchair that considers variations of anthropometric dimensions with minimal assistance from caregivers.
