This study aimed to compare the efficacy of rice bran powder (RBP), fermented by L. plantarum EM or W. koreensis DB1 isolated from kimchi, for ameliorating the dyslipidemia and obesity. Mice fed an high-fat and -cholesterol diet (HFC) containing fermented RFP using L. plantarum EM (HFC-LFRB) or fermented RFP using W. koreensis DB1 (HFC-WFRB) for 12 weeks. Body weight gain, the liver and white AT weights, serum TG, TC, and leptin levels, and hepatic TC and TG levels, and steatosis were lower in all RBP groups than in the HFC group. These effects are possibly mediated through the inhibition of hepatic Acc, Fas, Hmgcr, and Ldlr mRNA expressions. The fecal lipid and TC efflux levels were significantly elevated by the HFCD-LFRB supplement compared to those measured in the HFC or HFC-WFRB group. The cholesterol-lowering effects were marginally greater in the HFC-LFRB group than in the HFC-WFRB group. However, the anti-obesity effect was slightly high in the HFC-WFRB group. These results suggest that FRB may possess anti-adipogenic and lipid-reducing effects by enhancing lipid metabolism in mice.
