A Novel Two-Step Tensegrity Topology-Finding Method Based on Mixed Integer Programming and Nonlinear Programming

        Xian Xu,Shaoxiong Huang,Tingting Shu,Yafeng Wang,Yao-Zhi Luo 한국강구조학회 2022 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.22 No.4

A two-step topology-fi nding method based on mixed integer programming and nonlinear programming is proposed for tensegrity structures. In the fi rst step, feasible and symmetric strut connectivities are obtained through a ground structure method combined with mixed integer programming; in the second step, the cable connectivities are optimized through nonlinear programming to obtain a feasible tensegrity structure. The same ground structure used in the fi rst step is adopted in the second step, which is benefi cial to fi nd a more symmetric cable layout. The independent continuous mapping method is used in the second step to convert the 0–1 binary variables of cable connectivities to continuous variables to transform the combinatorial optimization problem into a nonlinear programming problem. The number of strut lengths is adopted as a control parameter and a symmetry objective function is proposed to generate a variety of regular and symmetric tensegrity structures. A multi-stage computation scheme is proposed to improve the computational effi ciency. Typical examples are carried out to validate the proposed method. The computational effi ciency of the method is benchmarked with existing methods fully based on mixed integer programming. Results demonstrate that the computational effi ciency of the proposed method is signifi cantly improved compared to the existing methods.

      • On compressive behavior of large welded hollow spherical joints with both internal and external stiffeners

Tingting Shu,Xian Xu,Yao-Zhi Luo 국제구조공학회 2023 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.46 No.2

Welded hollow spherical joints are commonly used joints in space grid structures. An internal stiffener is generally adopted to strengthen the joints when large hollow spheres are used. To further strengthen it, external stiffeners can be used at the same time. In this study, axial compression tests are conducted on four full-scale 550 mm spherical joints. The failure modes and strengths of the tested joints are investigated. It shows that the external stiffeners are able to increase the strength of the joint up to 25%. A numerical model for large spherical joints with stiffeners is established and verified against the experimental results. Parametric studies are executed considering six main design factors using the verified model. It is found that the strength of the spherical joint increases as the thickness, height and number of the external stiffeners increase, and the hollow sphere’s diameter has a neglectable effect on the enhancement caused by the external stiffeners. Based on the experimental and numerical results, a practical formula for the compressive bearing capacity of large welded hollow spherical joints with both internal and external stiffeners is proposed. The proposed formula gives a conservative prediction on the compressive capacity of large welded hollow spherical joints with both internal and external stiffeners.

Low-Charge Electrotherapy in Geriatric Major Depressive Disorder Patients: A Case Series

        Xiao-ming Kong,Xin-hui Xie,Shu-xian Xu,Yang Chen,Chen Wang,Hong Hong,Yan Sun 대한신경정신의학회 2019 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.16 No.6

To examine the feasibility of low-charge electrotherapy (LCE) in treating geriatric major depressive disorder (MDD) patients. Bi-temporal LCEs (approximately 25 mC) were performed with an electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) instrument three times per week. We used the Hamilton Depression Scale 17 (HAMD-17) and the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) to assess the effects of LCE and the Mini- Mental State Examination (MMSE) to evaluate the cognitive function change before and after LCE. Six visits occurred at the baseline, after LCE sessions 3, 6, and 9, after the last session, and at the end of the one-month follow-up period. Four patients were enrolled in the study. Two patients completed all LCE sessions. Two patients withdrew during the trial, one due to the adverse event of uroschesis potentially caused by atropine and the other due to her own will. All four patients completed the follow-up sessions. The HAMD-17 and HAMA scores were reduced significantly at the last LCE session and the end of the follow-up period compared with the scores at the baseline. As measured by the MMSE, cognitive impairment showed no significant changes at the last LCE session and the end of the follow- up period compared with that at the baseline. In this case series, LCE showed potential as an alternative current-based treatment for treating geriatric MDD patients. Further research is needed to assess the efficiency and safety of LCE.

Molecular characterization of novel haplotypes of eIF4E family in Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis)

        Shuan-Tao Liu,Zhi-Gang Zhang,Qiao-Yun Li,Shu-Fen Wang,Zhi-Zhong Zhao,Jin-Dong Lu,Wen-Ling Xu,Xian-Xian Liu,Wei-Min Fu 한국유전학회 2013 Genes & Genomics Vol.35 No.6

Two genes coding for eukaryotic translation initiation factors, eIF4E.a and eIF4E.c, were isolated from twelve accessions of Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis). Polymorphism analysis revealed that 94and 142 polymorphic sites were characterized from allele of BraeIF4E.a and BraeIF4E.c which produced complex haplotype structures. Six novel haplotypes were characterized from the two alleles respectively. Among the six novel haplotypes of BraeIF4E.a, three loss-of-function mutations were identified in which a conserved single nucleotide deletion mutation cause the early termination of BraeIF4E.a coding product; while for six new BraeIF4E.c haplotypes, their coding product show amino acid substitution mutations on non-conservative amino acid residues which might affect TuMV infection in Chinese cabbage.

      • PDCD4 as a Predictor of Sensitivity to Neoadjuvant Chemoradiotherapy in Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer Patients

        Dou, Xue,Wang, Ren-Ben,Meng, Xiang-Jiao,Yan, Hong-Jiang,Jiang, Shu-Mei,Zhu, Kun-Li,Xu, Xiao-Qing,Chen, Dong,Song, Xian-Rang,Mu, Dian-Bin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.2

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the role of programmed cell death 4 (PDCD4) expression in predicting tumor response to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and outcomes for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer. Methods: Clinicopathological factors and expression of PDCD4 were evaluated in 92 patients with LARC treated with nCRT. After the completion of therapy, 4 cases achieved clinical complete response (cCR), and thus the remaining 88 patients underwent a standardized total mesorectal excision procedure. There were 38 patients (41.3%) with a good response (TRG 3-4) and 54 (58.7%) with a poor one (TRG 0-2). Results: Immunohistochemical staining analyses showed that patients with high expression of PDCD4 were more sensitive to nCRT than those with low PDCD4 expression (P=0.02). High PDCD4 expression before nCRT and good response (TRG3-4) were significantly associated with improved 5-year disease-free survival and 5-year overall survival (P<0.05). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that the pretreatment PDCD4 expression was an independent prognostic factor. Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that high expression of PDCD4 protein is a useful predictive factor for good tumor response to nCRT and good outcomes in patients with LARC.
