Myocardial degeneration in Russian rat snake (Elaphe schrenckii)

A female Russian rat snake, Elaphe schrenckii, was presented for loss of movement. Physical examination showed the swelling in the area of heart. Radiographic examination revealed cardiomegaly, pericardial effusion, and a soft opacity in the area of swelling. Although pericardiocentesis to remove fluid out from the heart as well as vigorous treatments were given to the Russian rat snake, it died during treatments. Postmortem examination confirmed pericardial effusion of pale yellow, translucent fluid with mild dilation of the right atrium and ventricle. Formalin -fixed paraffin embedded tissue sections were stained with routine H&E and the classical von Kossa's method for histopathological demonstration. Histopathological examination revealed multifocal calcification in myocardium and consists of the displacement of muscular fiber by limy deposits. Congestive heart failure was suspicious for the snake when it was alive. In wild reptiles, muscle degeneration has been reported with nutrition disorders but the present case is the first report of myocardial degeneration in a Russian rat snake and contributes to the rare reports of cardiac disease in snakes.
Cardiotoxicity linked to anticancer agents and cardioprotective strategy

Chemotherapy is a main treatment for cancer,and it benefi ts patients by controlling cancer relapse andmetastasis, thereby leading to an increase in the overall survivalrate. However, this treatment is associated with mildto severe side eff ects, one of which is cardiotoxicity. Theseverity of cardiotoxicity, a leading cause of cardiovasculardiseases, depends on the type of cancer therapy employedand the time required for its management. A chemotherapeuticagent is used either alone or in combination with otherdrugs for cancer treatment. The exact mechanism of chemotherapeuticagent-induced cardiotoxicity remains unclear,although it is likely to be multifactorial and to include oxidativestress, apoptosis, and infl ammation. There are manyapproaches to avoid the untoward eff ects of chemotherapeuticagents. However, the available options for cardiac protectionare minimal, and they include renin-angiotensin systemblockers, beta-blockers, herbal drugs, or iron chelators suchas dexrazoxane. The present review provides information onthe molecular mechanism of chemotherapy-induced myocardialinfarction and cardiotoxicity along with scientifi callystudied synthetic molecules, herbal extracts, and naturalproducts to manage chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity.

Novel triethanol amine-grafted hollow carbon nanofibers (CNFs), supported on carbon beads, weresynthesized via templating method for the removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) ions from water. CNFs were grown on carbon beads by chemical vapor deposition using the in situ incorporated Crnanoparticles in the beads, as the catalyst. The beads were ultra-sonicated to remove the nanoparticlesfrom the tip of the CNFs, thereby creating the hollow CNFs. The Cr(VI)-adsorption capacity of the materialwas determined to be 51 mg/g at 125 ppm-initial concentration and 4.5-solution pH. Negligibleinterference from coexisting metal ions in water was found with the Cr(VI)-adsorption.

Efficient VLSI architecture for interpolation decoding of hermitian codes

<P>A fast, area efficient very large scale integration (VLSI) architecture is proposed for a unique decoding algorithm of Hermitian codes which was presented recently by Lee and O'Sullivan from an interpolation perspective. The algorithm iteratively computes the sent message through a majority voting procedure by using the Gröbner bases of interpolation modules. The algorithm has a regular structure which makes it suitable for VLSI implementation. The circuitry is simplified as the decoding algorithm directly gives the message word at the end of the decoding algorithm without separate steps like Chien search and Forney's formula. In terms of hardware requirements, for the widely used high rate Hermitian codes, the Lee-O'Sullivan algorithm is <I>q</I> times faster than Kötters algorithm with the same space complexity of <I>O</I>(<I>q</I><SUP>4</SUP>). Further speed improvements can be achieved by combining the main idea of Guruswami list decoding with the Lee-O'Sullivan algorithm. In terms of hardware, the addition of this concept, will further reduce the running time of the algorithm and make the circuitry about two times faster than the original Lee-O'Sullivan algorithm. The implementation results for both the Köetter and the Lee-O'Sullivan algorithms on Xilinx Virtex-5 shows that the proposed decoder can be operated at higher clock frequency with almost same area complexity.</P>

Aims: The extent of liver resection for gall bladder cancer (GBC) is still debated. We evaluated the post-operative and oncological outcomes of patients who underwent liver wedge excision. Methods: Patients who underwent radical cholecystectomy (with a liver wedge excision of 2.5-3 centimetres) from June 2010 to December 2015 were retrospectively analysed. Results: 97 cases of primary GBC out of 558 patients undergoing surgery for GBC were selected. Majority of our patients had stage III disease (52 %). At a median follow up of 29 months, 65.9 % of patients were disease free where as 13.4% were alive with disease. 2.1 % died in postoperative period, 12.3% patients died of disease and 6.1% died of unrelated causes.9 patients had loco- regional recurrence and 16 failed at distant sites. Only one patient recurred in the gall bladder bed. 3-year overall survival of stage II was 85 % and of stage III was 60 %. Conclusions: Surgical outcomes of radical cholecystectomy with wedge resection of the liver at our centre, parallels published international literature. With low morbidity and mortality, it emphasizes oncological equivalence of liver wedge resection as compared to formal segment IVb/V excision, provided a margin negative resection is achieved.

Backgrounds/Aims: Timing of resection for synchronous colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM) has been debated for decades. The aim of the present study was to assess the feasibility of simultaneous resection of CRLM in terms of major complications and develop a prediction model for safe resections. Methods: A retrospective single-center study of synchronous, resectable CRLM, operated between 2013 and 2021 was conducted. Upper limit of 95% confidence interval (CI) of major complications (≥ grade IIIA) was set at 40% as the safety threshold. Logistic regression was used to determine predictors of morbidity. Prediction model was internally validated by bootstrap estimates, Harrell’s C-index, and correlation of predicted and observed estimates. Results: Ninety-two patients were operated. Of them, 41.3% had rectal cancers. Major hepatectomy (≥ 4 segments) was performed for 25 patients (27.2%). Major complications occurred in 20 patients (21.7%, 95% CI: 13.8%–31.5%). Predictors of complications were the presence of comorbidities and major hepatectomy (area under the ROC curve: 0.692). Unacceptable level of morbidity (≥ 40%) was encountered in patients with comorbidities who underwent major hepatectomy. Conclusions: Simultaneous bowel and CRLM resection appear to be safe. However, caution should be exercised when combining major liver resections with bowel resection in patients with comorbid conditions.
COMMON FIXED POINT THEOREMS IN G-FUZZY METRIC SPACES WITH APPLICATIONS

In this paper, we prove common fixed point theorems for six weakly compatible mappings in G-fuzzy metric spaces introduced by Sun and Yang [16] which is actually generalization of G-metric spaces. G-metric spaces coined by Mustafa and Sims [13]. The paper concerns our sustained efforts for the materialization of G-fuzzy metric spaces and their properties. We also exercise the concept of symmetric G-fuzzy metric space, φ-function and weakly compatible mappings. The results present in this paper generalize the well-known comparable results in the literature. We justify our results by suitable examples. Some applications are also given in support of our results.
