      • Epigenetics by DNA Methylation for Normal and Cloned Animal Development

        "Epigenetics" means the study of heritable changes in gene-activity without changes in DNA sequences. Methylation of the cytosine residue in a CpG dinucleotide sequence is a characteristic of the vertebrate genome. In vertebrates, methylation of DNA mainly occurs at the 5′-position of cytosine in a CpG dinucleotide forming 5-methylcytosine. Methylation of DNA plays a profound role in transcriptional repression of gene expression through several mechanisms. Generally, DNA of inactive genes is more heavily methylated than that of active ones; conversely demethylation of DNA reactivates gene expression in vivo and in vitro.

        REVIEW : Role of modern 3D echocardiography in valvular heart disease

        Three-dimensional (3D) echocardiography has been conceived as one of the most promising methods for the diagnosis of valvular heart disease, and recently has become an integral clinical tool thanks to the development of high quality real-time transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). In particular, for mitral valve diseases, this new approach has proven to be the most unique, powerful, and convincing method for understanding the complicated anatomy of the mitral valve and its dynamism. The method has been useful for surgical management, including robotic mitral valve repair. Moreover, this method has become indispensable for nonsurgical mitral procedures such as edge to edge mitral repair and transcatheter closure of paravaluvular leaks. In addition, color Doppler 3D echo has been valuable to identify the location of the regurgitant orifice and the severity of the mitral regurgitation. For aortic and tricuspid valve diseases, this method may not be quite as valuable as for the mitral valve. However, the necessity of 3D echo is recognized for certain situations even for these valves, such as for evaluating the aortic annulus for transcatheter aortic valve implantation. It is now clear that this method, especially with the continued development of real-time 3D TEE technology, will enhance the diagnosis and management of patients with these valvular heart diseases.

        Incidence Rate of Injection-Site Granulomas Resulting from the Administration of Luteinizing Hormone- Releasing Hormone Analogues for the Treatment of Prostatic Cancer

        Purpose: Granulomas resulting from the administration of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogues (LH-RH analogues) are thought to be very rare. We report on our clinical experience with injection-site granulomas that result from the administration of LH-RH analogues, and we evaluate the incidence rate of these granulomas. Materials and Methods: We used the clinical records of 118 patients who were administered LH-RH analogues in 2005. We describe the clinical data of patients who experienced injection-site granulomas and evaluated the incidence rate. Results: Five patients demonstrated injection-site granulomas due to LH-RH analogue administration. The incidence rate was 4.2% (5 of 118 patients). Most of the granulomas occurred after the first or second administration of 11.25mg of leuprorelin acetate. Conclusion: The occurrence of granulomas resulting from the administration of LH-RH analogues was thought to be very rare. Our study, however, revealed a higher incidence rate than expected, especially for leuprorelin acetate.

        アイスランド海賊黨の連續性と非連續性 ―「新しい海賊黨」はいかにして生まれたのか―

        本論文では、これまでの海賊黨と近年急成長を遂げたアイスランド海賊黨との連續性と非連續性を明らかにしつつ、その非連續的な側面がなぜ生まれたのかを解明する。 アイスランド海賊黨は、プライバシ一の權利や情報の自由化を强調する点では、他國の海賊黨との連續性が見られる。一方で、元來海賊黨の中心的な政策イシュ一であったデジタル權利問題から距離をとる姿勢や、國內の旣成勢力に對してより明確に敵對關係を構築する点など、これまでの海賊黨には見られなかった特徵を有する。これらは、2008年の金融危機直後の反緊縮運動とその參加者によって設立されたアイスランド海賊黨の前身となる政黨の存在というアイスランド固有の歷史的文脈に由來するものである。つまり、アイスランド海賊黨の持つ海賊黨としての非連續性とは、海賊黨と金融危機以後のアイスランド國內における政治社會變動という固有の條件の下に生み出されたと考えられる。 アイスランド海賊黨の事例は、海賊黨の發生基盤やアイデンティティでさえ、國內的な社會經濟的、政治的文脈に大きく影響されること示している。したがって、海賊黨硏究において、インタ一ナショナルな視点から海賊黨の連續性を明確化する一方で、よりナショナルな視点から各國固有の文脈を見出し、その非連續性も考慮する必要がある。 This paper shows the reason why the Icelandic Pirate Party is different from the other pirates. While Icelandic Pirate Party has some common points which is that they emphasize privacy right and freedom of information with other pirates, the party obviously different from other pirates. For instance, they do not commit strongly with digital right issue which is one of the main political issues in other pirates. Also, the party create an antagonistic relation with national establishments. These differences are rooted on Icelandic historical context. It means that Icelandic Pirate Party has another roots except the pirate movement that is an anti-austerity movement after 2008 Icelandic financial crisis and a new political party created by the protesters which is a predecessor of Icelandic Pirate party. The Icelandic case shows that even identity or emergrnt base of Pirate Party are affected by national social economic and political contexts. Thus, this papaer concluds that national contexts should be considered more for Pirate Party studies, while it emphasis common points from international view point.

        Chronic Dislocation of the Distal Interphalangeal Joints

        Irreducible dislocation of the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint is a rare traumatic condition commonly seen in sports injuries. Herein, we present a case with chronic dislocation of the DIP joint caused by high energy trauma accompanied by a fracture of the ipsilateral clavicle. The local deformity resulting from the dislocation can be trivial. Therefore, obtaining radiographs of all the interphalangeal joint injuries, regardless of the findings on inspection, is crucial for accurate diagnosis in the case of high energy trauma. The good functional improvement was obtained by open reduction and temporary wire fixation for 4 weeks.

        BUILDUP AND RELEASE OF MAGNETIC TWIST DURING THE X3.4 SOLAR FLARE OF 2006 DECEMBER 13

        <P>We analyze the temporal evolution of the three-dimensional magnetic structure of the flaring active region (AR) NOAA 10930 by using the nonlinear force-free fields extrapolated from the photospheric vector magnetic fields observed by the Solar Optical Telescope on board Hinode. This AR consisted mainly of two types of twisted magnetic field lines: one has a strong negative (left-handed) twist due to the counterclockwise motion of the positive sunspot and is rooted in the regions of both polarities in the sunspot at a considerable distance from the polarity inversion line (PIL). In the flare phase, dramatic magnetic reconnection occurs in those negatively twisted lines in which the absolute value of the twist is greater than a half-turn. The other type consists of both positively and negatively twisted field lines formed relatively close to the PIL between two sunspots. A strong Ca II image began to brighten in this region of mixed polarity, in which the positively twisted field lines were found to be injected within one day across the pre-existing negatively twisted region, along which strong currents were embedded. Consequently, the central region near the PIL contains a mix of differently twisted field lines and the strong currents may play a prominent role in flare onset.</P>

        The effectiveness of optical coherence tomography for evaluating peri-implant tissue: A pilot study

        Purpose: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been investigated as a novel diagnostic imaging tool. The utilisation of this equipment has been evaluated through several studies in the field of dentistry. The aim of this preliminary study was to determine through basic experiments the effectiveness of OCT in implant dentistry. Materials and Methods: To assess detection ability, we captured OCT images of implants in each of the following situations: (1) implants covered with mucosae of various thicknesses that were harvested from the mandibles of pigs; (2) implants installed in the mandibles of pigs; and (3) implants with abutments and crowns fixed with temporary cement. The OCT images were captured before cementation, after cementation, and after removing the excess submucosal cement. Results: If the thickness of the mucosa covering the implant body was less than 1 mm, the images of the implants were clearly detected by OCT. In the implants were installed in pigs' mandibles, it was difficult to capture clear images of the implant and alveolar bone in most of the samples. Remnants of excess cement around the implants were visible in most samples that had a mucosa thickness of less than 3 mm. Conclusion: Currently, OCT imaging of implants is limited. Cement remnants at the submucosal area can be detected in some cases, which can be helpful in preventing peri-implant diseases. Still, though there are some restrictions to its application, OCT could have potential as an effective diagnostic instrument in the field of implant dentistry as well.
