Caroli's disease, which is a rare condition with congenital dilatation of the intrahepatic bile ducts, is usually diagnosed postoperatively. The clinical suspicion in a patient with gallstones and choledocholithiasis presenting with dilated intrahepatic biliary radicles and jaundice is usually an obstructive etiology. However, scintigraphic evaluation of this entity, as in this case, gives additional information on liver function, biliary drainage and predisposing conditions like Caroli's disease, which could be missed otherwise.

Radiation synovectomy has been proposed as a promising palliative therapy for recurrent joint effusions for the last two or three decades. Ionizing radiations emitted by intrarticularly administered radiolabelled colloids. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of radiation synovectomy (RSV) using $^{188}Re$-tin colloid in the treatment of recurrent joint effusions and chronic synovitis of knee joints. Three phase bone scan was acquired for the concerned joint prior to radiosynovectomy. $^{188}Re$-tin colloid was prepared as per the reported protocol. 9 patients, diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and suffering from chronic resistant synovitis of the knee, ankle or elbow joints were administered the radiopharmaceuticals, checked for radiochemical purity >95% by intraarticular route. A whole body scan was acquired 2 h post-radiosynovectomy. In all the 9 treatments, no leakage to non-target organs was visible in the whole body scan. Static scans of the joint revealed complete retention of $^{188}Re$-tin colloid in the joints post administration of the agent. Clinically all patients exhibited a complete or partial response. RSV with $^{188}Re$-tin colloid was safe and effective in patients with chronic synovitis of rheumatoid origin.

This paper concerns a problem of classification based on training dta. A framework of information geometry is given to elucidate the characteristics of discriminant functions including logistic discrimination and AdaBoost. We discuss a class of loss functions from a unified viewpoint.

<P>We have rationally designed a densely packed 1:1 donor–acceptor (<B>D</B>–<B>A</B>) cocrystal system comprising two isometric distyrylbenzene- and dicyanodistyrylbenzene-based molecules, forming regular one-dimensional mixed stacks. The crystal exhibits strongly red-shifted, bright photoluminescence originating from an intermolecular charge-transfer state. The peculiar electronic situation gives rise to high and ambipolar p-/n-type field-effect mobility up to 6.7 × 10–3 and 6.7 × 10–2 cm2 V–1 s–1, respectively, as observed in single-crystalline OFETs prepared via solvent vapor annealing process. The unique combination of favorable electric and optical properties arising from an appropriate design concept of isometric <B>D</B>–<B>A</B> cocrystal has been demonstrated as a promising candidate for next generation (opto-)electronic materials.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jacsat/2013/jacsat.2013.135.issue-12/ja312197b/production/images/medium/ja-2012-12197b_0008.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/ja312197b'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
Design of MgAl₂O₄ Spinel-Oxide-Based Tunnel Barriers for Advanced Spintronics Devices

Tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) is one of the central properties to develop high-performance spintronics devices. MgO(001) with bcc-Fe or CoFe electrodes has been mostly studied as a tunnel barrier of MTJs for the last decades because of its giant TMR ratio originating from the spin-filtering effect of Δ₁-symmetric evanescent states (s, pz, d3z²-r² orbitals), as predicted in 2001. However, the TMR ratio of MgO-MTJs reduces significantly by bias voltage applications, indicating a limitation of the output voltage of the MTJ. Recent experiments show that the use of a (001)-oriented spinel-type oxide, MgAl₂O₄, as a tunnel barrier improves the robustness of the TMR ratio under bias applications, but a theoretical TMR limit in Fe/MgAl₂O₄/Fe(001) MTJs is very small compared to the MgO-MTJs. This is because the in-plane lattice periodicity of Fe electrode is half of that of MgAl₂O₄ and a band-folding effect is induced in the two-dimensional Brillouin zone of the in-plane wave vector in the Fe electrode. This effect provides additional conductive states at the Δ line in MgAl₂O₄-MTJ, contributing to the reduction of the TMR ratio. In this talk, we propose a combined trilayer tunnel barrier, MgO/MgAl₂O₄/MgO, to overcome the above issue of the small TMR limit of MgAl₂O₄-MTJs on the basis of the first-principles calculations. We performed ballistic-conductance calculations in an Fe/MgO(n)/MgAl₂O₄/MgO(n)/Fe(001) MTJ using the non-equilibrium Green’s functions method to clarify the TMR ratio under bias voltage application. Here, number of MgO layers (n-ML) is changed as n = 1, 2, 3. In the case of n = 1, a large TMR ratio of 1184% is obtained at a zero-bias voltage and this large value is almost maintained up to V = 1.2 V (see blue in Fig. 1), leading to a large voltage output. In contrast, a single barrier MgAl₂O₄ shows only a small TMR ratio (~125%), which is constant below V = 1.6 V (see orange in Fig. 1). These results indicate that both the models have a similar tendency in bias voltage dependence of TMR, except for the magnitude of a TMR ratio. Moreover, we clarified that the presence of an MgO interlayer between Fe and MgAl₂O₄ plays an important role in retaining (blocking) the Δ1 evanescent state for majority (minority) spin. The former leads to the robustness of the TMR ratio against bias voltage as observed in single MgAl₂O₄ MTJs, while the latter does to the large TMR ratio as in single MgO MTJs. 〈그림 본문참조〉

<P>Solid state luminescence enhancement (SLE) of conjugated organic materials has had a great impact in materials science, but a deep understanding has been rather limited to date. Here, we investigate a prototype example of SLE materials, cyano-substituted distyrylbenzene (DCS), by varying systematically and subtly the substitution pattern (inter alia of the position of the cyano-substituent) to give largely different photoresponse in fluid and solid solution as well in the crystalline state. The combination of quantitative (ultra)fast optical spectroscopic techniques, appropriate quantum-chemical methods, and structural (X-ray) data allows us to elucidate and rationalize all details of the SLE process, including steric versus electronic factors, radiative versus nonradiative decay channels, and intra- versus intermolecular contributions, providing a first holistic picture of SLE.</P>
