Looking at Animation through the lens of Navarasa

애니메이션은 실사영화보다 더 매력적으로 강렬하게 감정을 전달하고 일으킨다. 감정은 현실주의를 보충한다. 무에서 시작하여, 애니메이션과 함께 어떤 것으로든 전개되며, 놀라울 정도로 많은 행동과 상황은 물론 모든 감정의 절대적 확대가 가능하다. 현대의 기술은 설득력 있게 감정을 자극하는 분위기와 캐릭터 그리고 동작 형성을 가능하게 한다. 이야기는 더 이상 한정적이지 않으며 이미지는 애니메이션을 통해 어떤 형태로도 구현될 수 있다. 기술에도 불구하고, 애니메이션은 본질적으로 강화하고 과장하는 힘이 있으며 만약 한계를 넘어서 유도된 현실과 이미 알려진 세상을 결집할 수 있다면 애니메이션은 믿을만한 것이 된다. 마치 꿈속에서처럼 애니메이션은 의문과 비판을 허용하지 않거니와 경험한적 없고, 상상한적 없는, 그 자체의 규정, 이유 그리고 지혜를 가진, 인간이 아니거나 혹은 현실의 계율을 따르는 캐릭터가 함께 살고 있는 내러티브 환경을 맹신하게 한다. 그러나 그 속의 캐릭터는 가장 강력한 감정을 끌어낼 수 있다. 예술에 대한 고문서 Natyashastra는 인도 전통 무용, 음악, 미술, 공연, 조각 그리고 문학에 영향력을 끼치고 있다. 여기에는Navarasa 혹은 9개의 감정과 같은 예술의 기초 지지체에 대한 이론이 적혀있다. 이 이론은 예술의 주요 목적이 관람자를 평행현실로 옮기는 것이라고 주장한다. 이 평행현실이란 그 혹은 그녀가 경험한 놀라운 자신만의 자각의 정수, 영적인 것과 도덕에 대한 의문 등 놀라움으로 가득 찬 곳을 말한다. 각각의 Rasa(정수)는 색과 신을 연관시켜 부호화한다. 각 rasa에 대한 해석은 매우 종교적이고 격식 있는 진화라고 할 수 있다. 성공적인 작품에 대한 평가는 관객이 어떻게 예술에 감정적으로 흡수되느냐와 rasa 경험에 있어 몰입의 질에 있다. 이러한 경험은 실생활에서 경험한 것 같은 감정을 불러일으키지만 이와는 또 다른 아름답게 승화된 예술적 가치를 선사한다. Animation conveys and kindles emotion powerfully and can be more engaging than live action. Emotion makes up for realism, beginning with nothing one can, with animation, develop into anything, absolute amplification of the whole gamut of emotions is possible, as also an astonishing number of behaviors and atmosphere. Technology today has made it possible to construct ambiance, character and movement to convincingly provoke emotions. Stories no longer have confines; imaginings can materialize in any form through animation. Technology notwithstanding, animation inherently possesses the power to enhance and exaggerate and be believable if one can be enticed across the threshold of reality and the known world into the assembled one. As in a dream animation doesn’t allow for questions and skepticism, but a leap of faith into untried and unimagined ecospheres of narratives that have their own rubrics, reason and wisdom; inhabited with characters that may not be human or follow commandments of reality. Yet they can draw out the most potent emotions. The Natyashastra an ancient treatise on the arts has influenced dance, music, painting, theatre, sculpture and literary traditions in India. It talks of the aesthetic theory of Navrasas or the 9 emotions as the fundamental anchor of art. The theory asserts that the primary goal of art is to transport the viewer into a parallel reality, full of amazement where she experiences the essence of her own consciousness and reflects on spiritual and moral questions. These are the emotions, moods or sentiments that reflect life. Each Rasa is codified and associated with a color and a deity. The interpretation of each rasa may vary with regional and formal evolution. The success of a piece is measured by how the audience is emotionally absorbed into the art and the immersive quality of the rasa experience. The experience recalls emotion as experienced in real life but has a different, transfigured aesthetic quality.
