Clostridium difficile is the leading cause of hospital-acquired antibiotic-associated diarrhea worldwide; in addition, the proliferation of antibiotic-resistant C. difficile is becoming a significant problem. Virgin coconut oil (VCO) has been shown previously to have the antimicrobial activity. This study evaluates the lipid components of VCO for the control of C. difficile. VCO and its most active individual fatty acids were tested to evaluate their antimicrobial effect on C. difficile in vitro. The data indicate that exposure to lauric acid (C12) was the most inhibitory to growth (P < .001), as determined by a reduction in colony-forming units per milliliter. Capric acid (C10) and caprylic acid (C8) were inhibitory to growth, but to a lesser degree. VCO did not inhibit the growth of C. difficile; however, growth was inhibited when bacterial cells were exposed to 0.15–1.2% lipolyzed coconut oil. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed the disruption of both the cell membrane and the cytoplasm of cells exposed to 2 mg/mL of lauric acid. Changes in bacterial cell membrane integrity were additionally confirmed for VCO and select fatty acids using Live/Dead staining. This study demonstrates the growth inhibition of C. difficile mediated by medium-chain fatty acids derived from VCO.
Personal Identification Based on Radio Signal Strength for Ubiquitous Healthcare Systems

Personal identification is essential for the automatic measurement of biosignal information in home healthcare systems. Personal identification is usually achieved with passive radio frequency identification (RFID), which does little more than store a unique identification number. However, passive RFID is not ideal for automatic identification. We present a user identification system based on radio signal strength indication (RSSI) using ZigBee for active RFID tags. Personal identification is achieved by finding the largest RSSI value from aggregated beacon messages that are periodically transmitted by active RFID tags carried by users. Obtaining reliable person!'.! identification without restricting the orientation requires a certain distance between the closest active RFID tag from the ZED and the second closest tag. The results show that the closest active RFID tag from the ZED and the second closest tag must be at least 70 cm apart to achieve reliable personal identification.

Baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) is a parameter of the cardiovascular system that is reflected in changes in pulse interval (PD and systolic blood pressure (SBP). BRS contains information about how the autonomic nervous system regulates hemodynamic homeostasis. Normally the beat-to-beat SBP measurement and the pulse interval measured from the electrocardiogram (ECG) are required to estimate the BRS. We investigated the possibility of measuring BRS in the absence of a beat-to-beat SBP measurement device. Pulse arrival time (PAT), defined as the time between the R-peak of the ECG and a single characteristic point on the pulse wave recorded from any arterial location was measured by photoplethysmography. By comparing the BRS obtained from conventional measurements with our method during controlled breathing, we confirmed again that PAT and SBP are closely correlated, with a correlation coefficient of -0.82 to -0.95. The coherence between SBP and PI at a respiration frequency of 0.07-0.12 Hz was similar to the coherence between PAT and PI. Although the ranges and units of measurement are different (ms/mmHg vs. ms/ms) for BRS measured conventionally and by our method, the correlation is very strong. Following further investigation under various conditions, BRS can be reliably estimated without the inconvenient and expensive beat-to-beat SBP measurement.
Mainstream Productivity of SCI Korean Medical Papers by Medical Specialty: 1980-1990
Vol.28 No.-
(Percentage Contribution from Korea to SCI Database)을 47개 의학분야별로 조사하였다.

The purpose of this thesis is to compare Princess Anna and Snow White as parodies and to analyze identity of Suah Bae's works, so called 'western atmosphere'. There are many similar factors between these two works; not only in the title, the plot and the features of the characters, but also the foregrounding factors as seen in the first scene and the color images of black, white and red. Princess Anna also modifies the issue of the absence of a mother and the similar plots like the beginning stage when the main character is abandoned by her parents and the temporary salvation by an enervative and handicapped Noah like the dwarves, and by Pink who is the prince of the under world and symbolizes the death. However, Princess Anna doesn't show real growth as in Snow White. Especially the way how Princess Anna is rescued is different from the one of Snow White; She is not rescued really by Noah and Pink. And so Anna gets out of the unrealistic and fantasy world, and steps into grey real society instead of royal society to be a happy queen in Snow White. The pastel tone's fantastic princess image of Anna was possible only through her father who brings her wealth and love during his reign. When she lost her father, she not only experiences the process of losing her father, but also lost wealth, dream, and fantasy. Meanwhile, Anna manifests that today's princesses are struggling between a dream and a reality to be a subjective being instead of a dependent to a king or a prince. As described above, Bae's princess image displays very sarcastic views to the western atmosphere; nonrealistic and non-constructive aspects, as well as her ironical reflection of western fairy tale's settings. While non-subjective, dependable and non-realistic childhood scenes compose fantastic, and regal 'princess' images, the melancholy images; poverty, suffering, desperation and gloom, reveal Anna's subjective growth rather strongly. Princess Anna as a parody of Snow White functions as a barometer which indicates the origin of western thoughts and tendencies that has been affected the contemporary Korean spirits. It shows also how western thoughts and tendencies are transformed and distorted in Korean society. Princess Anna can't be criticized in the views of indiscrete exoticism or urban emotion. Rather, it should be considered a work which manifests the conflict between fantasy and reality felt by the younger generation who live under the influence of western civilization and culture.
