Direct shear behavior of concrete filled hollow steel tube shear connector for slim-floor steel beams

        Emad Hosseinpour,Shahrizan Baharom,Wan Hamidon W. Badaruzzaman,Mahdi Shariati,Abdolrahim Jalali 국제구조공학회 2018 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.26 No.4

In this paper, a hollow steel tube (HST) shear connector is proposed for use in a slim-floor system. The HST welded to a perforated steel beam web and embedded in concrete slab. A total of 10 push-out tests were conducted under static loading to investigate the mechanical behavior of the proposed HST connector. The variables were the shapes (circular, square and rectangular) and sizes of hollow steel tubes, and the compressive strength of the concrete. The failure mode was recorded as: concrete slab compressive failure under the steel tube and concrete tensile splitting failure, where no failure occurred in the HST. Test results show that the square shape HST in filled via concrete strength 40 MPa carried the highest shear load value, showing three times more than the reference specimens. It also recorded less slip behavior, and less compressive failure mode in concrete underneath the square hollow connector in comparison with the circular and rectangular HST connectors in both concrete strengths. The rectangular HST shows a 20% higher shear resistance with a longer width in the load direction in comparison with that in the smaller dimension. The energy absorption capacity values showed 23% and 18% improvements with the square HST rather than a headed shear stud when embedded in concrete strengths of 25 MPa and 40 MPa, respectively. Moreover, an analytical method was proposed and predicts the shear resistance of the HST shear connectors with a standard deviation of 0.14 considering the shape and size of the connectors.

Vibration response of FG-CNT-reinforced plates covered by magnetic layer utilizing numerical solution

        Yan Cao,Farayi Musharavati,Shahrizan Baharom,Pouyan Talebizadehsardari,Tamer A. Sebaey,Arameh Eyvazian,Azlan Mohd Zain 국제구조공학회 2020 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.37 No.2

Vibration response in a sandwich plate with a nanocompiste core covered by magnetic layer is presented. The core is armed by functionalyy graded-carbon nanotubes (FG-CNTs) where the Mori-Tanaka law is utilized assuming agglomeration effects. The structure plate is located on elastic medium simulated by Pasternak model. The governing equations are derived based on Mindlin theory and Hamilton’s principle. Utilizing diffrential quadrature method (DQM), the frequency of the structure is calculated and the effects of magnetic layer, volume percent and agglomeration of CNTs, elastic medium and geometrical parameters of structure are shown on the frequency of system. Results indicate that with considering magnetic layer, the frequency of structure is increased.

      • Influence of porosity and cement grade on concrete mechanical properties

        Huang, Jiandong,Alyousef, Rayed,Suhatril, Meldi,Baharom, Shahrizan,Alabduljabbar, Hisham,Alaskar, Abdulaziz,Assilzadeh, Hamid Techno-Press 2020 Advances in concrete construction Vol.10 No.5

The given research focuses on examining the effect of relatively humidity (RH) and curing temperature on the hydrates as well as the porosity of calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement pastes. Numerous tests, which consist of mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), thermosgravi metric (TG) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were conducted. Various characterization techniques which include, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform microscopy along with X-ray diffraction evaluations were conducted on the samples to examine phase formation and crystallinity, morphology and microstructure along with bond formations and functional groups, respectively. During long-term study, the performance of concrete which consisted of limestone and flash-calcined was close to those from standard Portland cement concrete. Traditional classifications and methods of corrosion were widely used for the assessment of steel in concrete which may get employed to concrete which contains LC3 to recalibrate the range of polarization resistance for passitivity condition. For example, there is up to 79.5% and 146% respective flexural and compressive strengths. Moreover, they developed more advance electrical and thermo-mechanical performance with a substantial reduction in absorption of water of close to 400%. These advantages allow this research crucial to evaluate how these methods can be applied. Additionally, the research evaluates developed and more advanced cement preservation and repair techniques. The conclusion suggests concerted efforts by various stakeholders such as policy makers to enable low-carbon rates.

Potential of adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system for evaluating the factors affecting steel-concrete composite beam's shear strength

        M. Safa,M. Shariati,Z. Ibrahim,A. Toghroli,Shahrizan Bin Baharom,Norazman M. Nor,Dalibor Petković 국제구조공학회 2016 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.21 No.3

Structural design of a composite beam is influenced by two main factors, strength and ductility. For the design to be effective for a composite beam, say an RC slab and a steel I beam, the shear strength of the composite beam and ductility have to carefully estimate with the help of displacements between the two members. In this investigation the shear strengths of steel-concrete composite beams was analyzed based on the respective variable parameters. The methodology used by ANFIS (Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System) has been adopted for this purpose. The detection of the predominant factors affecting the shear strength steel-concrete composite beam was achieved by use of ANFIS process for variable selection. The results show that concrete compression strength has the highest influence on the shear strength capacity of composite beam.

      • Development of Pozzolanic material from clay

        Alaskar, Abdulaziz,Shah, S.N.R.,Keerio, Manthar Ali,Phulpoto, Javed Ali,Baharom, Shahrizan,Assilzadeh, Hamid,Alyousef, Rayed,Alabduljabbar, Hisham,Mohamed, Abdeliazim Mustafa Techno-Press 2020 Advances in concrete construction Vol.10 No.4

The following paper concentrates on the objective of studying the influences of extent of duration and temperature on the Pozzolanic properties as well as reactivity of locally existing natural clay of Nai Gaj, district Dadu, Sindh Pakistan. The activation of the clay only occurs through heating when temperature in a furnace chamber reaches 600, 700 and 800oC for 1, 2 and 3 hours and at 900 and 1000℃ for 1 and 2 hours. Furthermore, the strength activity index (SAI) of advanced pozzolanic material happens to be identified through 20% cement replacement for different samples of calcined clay as per ASTM C-618. The compressive strength test of samples had been operated for 7 and 28-days curing afterwards. The maximum compressive strength had been seen in mix E in which cement was replaced with clay calcined at 700℃ for 1 hour that is 27.05 MPa that is 24.31% more than that of control mix. The results gathered from the SAI verdicts the optimal activation temperature is 700℃ within a one-hour time period. The SAI at a temperature of 700℃ with a one-hour duration at 28 days is 124.31% which happens to satisfy the requirements of the new Pozzolanic material, in order to be applied in mortar/concrete (i.e., 75%). The Energy- dispersive spectrometry (EDS) along with the X-ray diffraction (XRD) have been carried out in means of verifying whether there is silica content or amorphous silica present in metakaolin that has been developed. The findings gathered from the SAI were validated, as the analysis of XRD verified that there is in fact Pozzolanic activity of developed metakaolin. Additionally, based on observation, the activated metakaolin holds a significant influence on the increase in mortar's compressive strength.

Evaluating the bond strength of FRP in concrete samples using machine learning methods

        Juncheng Gao,Mohammadreza Koopialipoor,Danial Jahed Armaghani,Aria Ghabussi,Shahrizan Baharom,Armin Morasaei,Ali Shariati,Majid Khorami,Jian Zhou 국제구조공학회 2020 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.26 No.4

In recent years, the use of Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) as one of the most common ways to increase the strength of concrete samples, has been introduced. Evaluation of the final strength of these specimens is performed with different experimental methods. In this research, due to the variety of models, the low accuracy and impact of different parameters, the use of new intelligence methods is considered. Therefore, using artificial intelligent-based models, a new solution for evaluating the bond strength of FRP is presented in this paper. 150 experimental samples were collected from previous studies, and then two new hybrid models of Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA)-Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Artificial Bee Colony (ABC)-ANN were developed. These models were evaluated using different performance indices and then, a comparison was made between the developed models. The results showed that the ICA-ANN model's ability to predict the bond strength of FRP is higher than the ABC-ANN model. Finally, to demonstrate the capabilities of this new model, a comparison was made between the five experimental models and the results were presented for all data. This comparison showed that the new model could offer better performance. It is concluded that the proposed hybrid models can be utilized in the field of this study as a suitable substitute for empirical models.

Economic application of structural health monitoring and internet of things in efficiency of building information modeling

        Yan Cao,Sepideh Miraba,Shervin Rafiei,Aria Ghabussi,Fateme Bokaei,Shahrizan Baharom,Pedram Haramipour,Hamid Assilzadeh 국제구조공학회 2020 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.26 No.5

One of the powerful data management tools is Building Information Modeling (BIM) which operates through obtaining, recalling, sharing, sorting and sorting data and supplying a digital environment of them. Employing SHM, a BIM in monitoring systems, would be an efficient method to address their data management problems and consequently optimize the economic aspects of buildings. The recording of SHM data is an effective way for engineers, facility managers and owners which make the BIM dynamic through the provision of updated information regarding the occurring state and health of different sections of the building. On the other hand, digital transformation is a continuous challenge in construction. In a cloud-based BIM platform, environmental and localization data are integrated which shape the Internet-of-Things (IoT) method. In order to improve work productivity, living comfort, and entertainment, the IoT has been growingly utilized in several products (such as wearables, smart homes). However, investigations confronting the integration of these two technologies (BIM and IoT) remain inadequate and solely focus upon the automatic transmission of sensor information to BIM models. Therefore, in this composition, the use of BIM based on SHM and IOT is reviewed and the economic application is considered.
