Lightweight and flexible photovoltaic devices have attracted great interest for specific potential applications, such as miniaturized drones, blimps, and aerospace electronics. This study aims to demonstrate ultralight and flexible perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with orthogonal silver nanowire (AgNW) transparent electrodes fabricated on 1.3 μm-thick polyethylene naphthalate foils. The smooth surface morphologies of the orthogonal AgNW transparent electrodes help prevent nonconducting silver halide formation generated by chemical reaction between the AgNWs and iodine in the active layer. The resultant PSCs with orthogonal AgNW transparent electrodes exhibit substantially improved device performance, achieving a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.18%, over PSCs with random AgNW network electrodes (10.43% PCE). Moreover, ultralight and flexible PSCs with the orthogonal AgNW electrodes exhibit an excellent power-per-weight of 29.4 W g−1, which is the highest value reported for a lightweight solar cell device. These lightweight energy harvesting platforms can be further expanded for various wearable optoelectronic devices.

Dynamic self-assembly of droplets, regular structure formation of moving deformable objects in a confinement environment is a challenging problem in nonlinear dynamics and engineering patterned structure. In the current work, we investigated how the local kinematic history affects the dynamic self-assembly of picoliter-sized droplets near the expansion regions in microfluidic devices. The local kinematic history was controlled by the shape of the expansion region and characterized using computational fluid dynamics. Size-controlled aqueous droplets in light mineral oil were continuously generated at T-junction microchannel and transported toward the expansion region. The fast dynamics of the droplets was tracked using high-speed video microscopy. We found three types of dynamic droplet arrays: 1D, 2D zigzag, and irregular. The order-disorder transition was associated not only with the droplet size, but also with the controlled local kinematic history, which results in the transient deformation of droplet and droplet-droplet interactions. The present results provide us with insight into the dynamic self-assembly of droplets and could be a useful guide for practical applications of droplet-based microfluidics.

Objective

To compare the pain-reducing effect of forest bathing alone versus forest bathing in combination with stretching and strengthening exercises in patients with chronic posterior neck pain.

Methods

Sixty-four subjects with posterior neck pain that had lasted more than 3 months were enrolled. They were randomly divided into a forest bathing alone (FBA) group and a forest bathing with exercise (FBE) group; each group included 32 subjects. All subjects from both groups walked every morning in the forest for about 2 hours for 5 days. In the afternoon, the FBE group did a stretching and strengthening exercise for about 4 hours; the FBA group had free time in the woods. Visual analog scale (VAS) on one day, VAS over the previous week, neck disability index (NDI), EuroQol 5D-3L VAS (EQ VAS) and index (EQ index), McGill pain questionnaire (MPQ), the number of trigger points in the posterior neck region (TRPs), and the range of motion of the cervical spine were evaluated on the first and last day of the program and compared between the two groups.

Results

The number of TRPs were significantly reduced in the FBE group compared with the FBA group (p=0.013). However, the other scales showed no significant difference between the two groups.

Conclusion

When patients with chronic posterior neck pain underwent a short-term forest bathing (less than 7 days) program, FBE was more effective in the reduction of the number of TRPs than FBA. However, all other pain measurement scales we evaluated showed no statistically significant difference between the two protocols.

Objective

To investigate differences in plantar pressure distribution between a normal gait and unpredictable slip events to predict the initiation of the slipping process.

Methods

Eleven male participants were enrolled. Subjects walked onto a wooden tile, and two layers of oily vinyl sheet were placed on the expected spot of the 4th step to induce a slip. An insole pressure-measuring system was used to monitor plantar pressure distribution. This system measured plantar pressure in four regions (the toes, metatarsal head, arch, and heel) for three events: the step during normal gait; the recovered step, when the subject recovered from a slip; and the uncorrected, harmful slipped step. Four variables were analyzed: peak pressure (PP), contact time (CT), the pressure-time integral (PTI), and the instant of peak pressure (IPP).

Results

The plantar pressure pattern in the heel was unique, as compared with other parts of the sole. In the heel, PP, CT, and PTI values were high in slipped and recovered steps compared with normal steps. The IPP differed markedly among the three steps. The IPPs in the heel for the three events were, in descending order (from latest to earliest), slipped, recovered, and normal steps, whereas in the other regions the order was normal, recovered, and slipped steps. Finally, the metatarsal head-to-heel IPP ratios for the normal, recovered, and slipped steps were 6.1±2.9, 3.1±3.0, and 2.2±2.5, respectively.

Conclusion

A distinctive plantar pressure pattern in the heel might be useful for early detection of a slip event to prevent slip-related injuries.

We report a new phenomenon that particles are selectively entrained along the corners of a straight rectangular microchannel according to their deformabilities under viscoelastic flows of a polymer solution. The mechanism behind this phenomenon is elucidated by the competition between the wall lift force induced by the particle deformability and the elastic force of the medium at the corners. On the basis of these findings, we devise a novel label-free deformability-selective cell-separation method, which achieves the high-purity separation of rigid particles and rigidified red blood cells (RBCs) from fresh RBCs in a single step, without any active components such as an electric force or sophisticated channel design. Furthermore, our novel method can be used directly to isolate white blood cells (WBCs) from diluted whole blood with a high enrichment ratio (>300) by utilizing difference in cell deformability.

Graphic Abstract

We report a novel method of deformability-selective particle entrainment and sorting in a rectangular microchannel using medium viscoelasticity.

Drawing from previous studies on ‘paternalistic leadership in East Asia’ and Korean management style, this study identified three main characteristics of Korean management styles: authoritarianism, benevolence, and collectivism. Using the data collected by a questionnaire survey of local employees in six Korean companies operating in Thailand, we empirically examined the effects of those characteristics of Korean management style on local employees’ organizational commitment. The findings of this study show that all of the three characteristics of Korean management style enhance the organizational commitment of Thai employees. The analysis further reveals the moderating effects of local employees’ educational attainment. Specifically, a higher level of education attainment of local employees tends to weaken the positive effects of authoritarianism and collectivism on their organizational commitment. However, there was no such a moderating effect of educational attainment on the relationship between benevolence and organizational commitment. The results of this study suggest that the Korean management style is effective in enhancing the organizational commitment of Thai employees because Korea and Thailand are similar in cultural dimensions such as authority, human orientation and collectivism. Moreover, the findings indicate that personal characteristics of local employees such as the level of educational attainment can influence the cross-border transferability of Korean management style.
