The Effects of Irradiation on Lung Function in Patients with Lung Cancer

        Kyung Hee Gang,Jae Yong Park,Kyung Ro kKim,Po Hee Chae,Nack Cheon Bae,SeungIck Cha,Chang Ho Kim,Tae HoonJ ung 대한암학회 2002 Cancer Research and Treatment Vol.34 No.4

Purpose: This study was performed to assist in theprediction of the clinical tolerance of patients with lungcancer to irradiation.Materials and Methods: The changes in lung functionof 26 patients with lung carcinomas, who had receivedradiation with curative intent, or postoperative adjuvantradiotherapy, were prospectively studied. Their pulmonaryfunction tests were conducted at presentation, andthen at 2 weeks, 2 months, and 6 months, following radiotherapy. Results: When the parameters of postirradiation pulmonaryfunctions (2 weeks, 2 months and 6 months) werecompared with the preirradiation baseline data, there wasa statistically significant decrease in FEF25~75% at 2months, but the rest of the parameters showed no significantchange following irradiation. However, when thebaseline lung function was compared with the lung functionat the lowest FVC, in patients with curative radiotherapy, there was a statistically significant decrease ofabout 10% in the FEV1 and DLCO.Conclusion: Preirradiation assessment of pulmonaryfunctions, particularly the FEV1 and DLCO will be useful forthe prediction of the clinical tolerance to irradiation.(Cancer Res Treat. 2002;34:264-267)
