This paper proposes a balancing and driving control system for a Mecanum wheel ball robot which has a two axis structure and four motors. The inverted pendulum control method is adopted to maintain the balance of the ball robot while it is driving. For the balancing control, an anon-model-based controller has been designed to control the device simply without the need of a complex formula. All the gains of the controller are heuristically adjusted during the experiments. The tilt angle is measured by IMU sensors, which is used to generate the control input of the roll and pitch controller to make the tilt angle zero. For the driving control, the PID control algorithm has been adopted with angles of the wheels and the encoder data. The performance of the designed control system has been verified through the real experiments with the suggested ball robot.

<P>A new pixel architecture and driving scheme for a low-power liquid crystal display (LCD) with a low refresh-rate is proposed. The proposed pixel architecture comprises two oxide thin-film transistors (Ox-TFTs), two ferroelectric memory TFTs (Fe-MTFTs), and two capacitors. Both TFTs have the same indium gallium zinc oxide film as an active layer. The Fe-MTFT exhibits a hysteresis property owing to the ferroelectric gate insulator that enables it to operate as a memory. A prototype LCD with 6 × 5 pixels is fabricated in this letter. The fieldeffect mobility of Ox-TFTs is 11 cm2V-1s-1. The memory window of Fe-MTFT is 5 V with a gate-voltage sweep from -20 to 20 V. After programming the Fe-MTFTs, the fabricated LCD successfully operates at a 0.5-Hz refresh-rate.</P>
DC Microgrid Operational Method for Enhanced Service Reliability Using DC Bus Signaling
Hwang, Pyeong-Ik,Jang, Gilsoo,Pyo, Gi-Chan,Han, Byung-Moon,Moon, Seung-Il,Ahn, Seon-Ju The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2015 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.10 No.2
This paper proposes a DC microgrid operational strategy and control method for improved service reliability. The objective is to supply power to as many non-critical loads as possible, while providing an uninterrupted power supply to critical loads. The DC bus signaling method, in which DC voltage is an information carrier, is employed to implement the operational strategy in a decentralized manner. During grid-connected operation, a grid-tied converter balances the power of the microgrid by controlling the DC voltage. All loads are connected to the microgrid, and operate normally. During islanded operation, distributed generators (DGs), a backup generator, or an energy storage system balances the power. However, some non-critical loads may be disconnected from the microgrid to ensure the uninterrupted power supply to critical loads. For enhanced service reliability, disconnected loads can be automatically reconnected if certain conditions are satisfied. Control rules are proposed for all devices, and detailed microgrid operational modes and transition conditions are then discussed. Additionally, methods to determine control parameter settings are proposed. PSCAD/EMTDC simulation results demonstrate the performance and effectiveness of the proposed operational strategy and control method.

The world experiences disasters caused by natural and industrial accidents. Various products have been developed and applied for manpower rescue and risk removal at disaster sites. However, in order to move debris and other obstacles generated after cutting and destroying operations to remove hazards at a disaster site, a mechanical device that can safely grasp various target objects is required. In this study, we developed a gripper that can be attached to a cutting machine typically used at disaster sites. The gripper proposed in this study can be attached and detached to the hydraulic cutter, and can stably hold a 100 kg object using the force generated from the hydraulic motor. In addition, a mechanism that can safely grip target objects regardless of shape has been applied. The gripper proposed in this study was verified through mathematical analysis and MFBD simulation. Finally, the gripper was actually manufactured and grip tested successfully.

Hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV) is an intrapulmonary adaptation mechanism that diverts blood away from hypoxic regions of the lung There are controversial reports regarding the effects of metabolic acidosis on HPV. Metabolic acidosis induced by acid infusion has been observed either not to affect, to increase, or to decrease hypoxia-induced increases in pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) or pulmonary vascular resistance PVR). But some have suggested that hypoxia and acidosis are major determinants, and that, although they may function as in dependent stimuli, they also manifest a complex interdependence. Experiments were designed to measure cardiopulmonary hemodynamic parameter during normal oxygenation by controlled mechanical respiration and exposures to metabolic acidosis around of arterial pH up to 7.19 unit by intravenous infusion of 2M HCL in the rate of 2mmol/kg/min The authors conducted experiments in intact dogs to reevaluate the effects of metabolic acidosis by infusion of HCL on HPV with normoxemia. Cardiopulmonary vascular parameters were measured at several pH levels (range of 7.38±7.19). The results were as follow : 1. Arterial pH was changed from 7.38±0.01 unit to 7.30±0.02 unit and 7.19±0.04 unit at 30 and 60minutes respectively, after intravenous infusion of HCL. 2. At 10 and 60 minutes after intravenous infusion of HCL, mean PAP was significantly increased 96.43±15.93% and 109.57±12.00% (P=0.0000) respectively, from basic value of 13.14 ±0.74 mmHg. 3. Mean PVR was also significantly increased 156.14±19.56% and 215.00±33.91% at 30 and 60 minutes respectively (p=0.0000), after intravenous infusion of HCL from basic value of 361.78±23.94 dyne. sec. cm. 4. Cardiac output had slowly decreased from 1.83±0.07 to 1.53±0.18 L/min(up to about 16.4% after 60 minutes)after intravenous infusion of HCL(P<0.05). 5. There were on significant changes of central venous pressure, pulmonary capillary wedge pressure, mean arterial blood pressure, and heart rate throughout the experiment. With above results the author concluded that metabolic acidosis by infusion of HCI increased PAP and PVR markedly, but decreased cardiac output slowly. This suggested that metabolic acidosis was one of major determinants to increase HPV.

NADH: quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) is known to beinvolved in the regulation of energy synthesis and metabolism, and the functional studies of NQO1 have largely focused on metabolic disorders. Here, we show for the first time that compared to NQO1-WT mice, NQO1-KO mice exhibited amarked increase of permeability and spontaneous in flammationin the gut. In the DSS-induced colitis model, NQO1-KO miceshowed more severe inflammatory responses than NQO1-WTmice. Interestingly, the transcript levels of claudin andoccludin, the major tight junction molecules of gut epithelialcells, were significantly decreased in NQO1-KO mice. The colons of NQO1-KO mice also showed high levels of reactiveoxygen species (ROS) and histone deacetylase (HDAC) activity, which are known to affect transcriptional regulation. Takentogether, these novel findings indicate that NQO1 contributesto the barrier function of gut epithelial cells by regulating the transcription of tight junction molecules.

<P>Administration of mountain ginseng (MG) extract can restore advanced cancer to a normal state. To elucidate the mechanism by which MG extract prevents the progression of lung cancer, the processes of proliferation and death of lung cancer cells (A549) were examined after treatment with MG extract. Butanol-extracted MG (BX-MG) showed a high inhibitory effect (IC(50) = 2 mg/ml) by attenuating proliferation and inducing apoptosis in lung cancer cells. By HPLC-UV analysis of BX-MG, ginsenosides, Rb1 was identified as the most abundant ginsenoside, followed by Rg1, Re, Rc and Rb2. BX-MG induced caspase-3 dependent apoptosis by inhibiting NF-관B. In addition, BX-MG activated p53 and p21, resulting in the attenuated proliferation of A549 cells. Reduced activity of the NF-관B promoter and increased activity of the p53 promoter indicate that BX-MG regulates apoptosis at the level of transcription in lung cancer cells. Furthermore, BX-MG blocked the nuclear translocation of RelA and the associated reduction in surviving. These results suggest that BX-MG inhibits lung cancer cell growth by activating tumor suppressors and inhibiting nuclear translocation of NF-관B.</P>
