        Age Trouble : A Yeatsian Journey of Aging in “Sailing to Byzantium”

        예이츠 연구에서 나이 듦의 문제는 일반적으로 그가 어떻게 노화에 따른 예술적 에너지의 쇠 퇴를 극복하기 위해 노년을 새로운 활력의 시기로 정의하고 있는 지에 초점을 맞추는 경향을 보여왔다. 이러한 접근 방식의 문제점은 예이츠가 보여 주는 나이 듦에 대한 시적 모색이 내포하고 있는 특정 문맥과 특수성을 도외시한 채 그의 문학이 성취한 보편성을 지나치게 강조하는 것이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 문제의식 속에서 이 논문은 이중의 방식으로 예이츠에 나타난 나이 듦의 문제를 살펴본다. 먼저 나이 듦의 문제를 ‘에이지 연구’를 통해 드러난 시간성에 대한 통찰을 규명하고, 이를 바탕으로 「비잔티움으로의 항해」를 중심으로 시인이 어떻게 신생 아일랜드 자유국의 현재와 미래에 대한 불안과 기대감을 시적으로 형상화하고 있는지 살핀다. The point of departure of this article is to put into question the ways in which existing Yeats scholarship probes his poetry focused on the issue of aging solely from the spiritual point of view—examining how Yeats forged aging into a time of renewal of life force and resuscitated imaginative energy in the face of bodily and pathological disintegration in the old age. Not a few Yeats scholars tend to resort to a prescribed understanding of the poet’s achievement in his old age as seeking for an antidote for creative stasis. What this approach entails is that one is likely to mold a “universal” Yeats and to gloss over specificities and contingencies embedded in reading Yeats through the lens of his views of aging. I thus aim to break away from the existing scholarship on the problem of aging in Yeats’s poetry by taking a twofold approach: first, situating Yeats’s ideas of aging in the context of the insights of age studies; second, linking the poet’s ideas of aging to his troubled relationship to the new Irish Free State with a focus on “Sailing to Byzantium.”

        From Roots to Routes : W. B. Yeats and World Literature

        What challenges does the shift toward world literature pose to the traditional disciplinary boundaries in and outside national literatures? Does such a shift signal a fruitful critical repositioning of its unspoken potentials, or does it ironically indicate remarginalization or displacement of the traditional discipline’s ongoing concerns? And then, how does a move toward world literature alter the cognitive and disciplinary maps in which Yeats studies has been produced and positioned? With these questions in mind, this article first examines an array of lines of thought that converge on and diverge from the idea of world literature. Subsequently, I suggest a double trajectory for reconsidering Yeats through the lens of world literature: redefining the Irish and European frames by explicating how mutually constitutive they are; reading Yeats through and against his non-Western predecessors, contemporaries, and successors.

        A Disciplinary Unconscious of World Literature : A Joycean Case

        이 논문은 세계문학의 관점에서 조이스 문학을 바라볼 수 있는 가능성 을 진단한다. 세계문학에 대한 논의가 가져온 새로운 이론적 가능성과 한계를 검토하 고 이를 통해 세계문학의 지도에서 조이스 문학의 좌표가 어떻게 새겨질 수 있는지 살펴본다. 결론적으로 이 논문은 세계문학의 개방성과 폐쇄성에 대한 자기반영적 성찰 을 통해 세계문학 연구의 학제적 무의식을 밝힌다. This article examines how the presence of certain intra-national and extra-national forces of affiliation and disaffiliation inherent in reconsidering James Joyce through the lens of world literature might challenge us to look anew at texts, the world, and our disciplinary practices of research and teaching to understand the interconnected complexities of the Joycean world. I diagnose the tug-of-war between openness and vigilance as both symptomatic and determining of a disciplinary unconscious of world literature, from which self-reflexivity, I argue, is required for both the core and periphery of world literature as a means of building a home for Joyce studies in and through world literature—a home lived as a relationship and tension, begetting its own negation and open to counter-meanings and other knowledges.

        “I have lived to make me what I choose to be” : Joe Christmas (Un)Raced in William Faulkner’s Light in August

        Is Joe Christmas, protagonist of William Faulkner’s 1932 Light in August, neither “black” nor “white,” or both “black” and “white”? Taking its cue from such a tricky question, this articles examines how Joe Christmas becomes an undecipherable sign of race in the South that lays bare both the black self-conscious experience of irreducible psychological, cultural division and the white’s delusion of psychological, cultural autonomy. His presence as a particular reference to miscegenation not only refuses a racial categorization that flattens him into a presence of one or the other color but also illustrates the ways in which blackness and whiteness identify themselves in terms of what they are not while potentially undermining themselves insofar as their identities depend on a relationship with the potentially confrontational other for their constitution. Viewed in this light, Joe Christmas is “raced” as all the racial anxieties and hysteria of the South are projected onto his body. Yet, he is also “unraced” by becoming a haunting trope of nothing that calls into question all the claims to a fixed and stable racial identity.

        Performing Commemoration, Textualizing Remembering in “Easter 1916”

        이 논문은 추모와 기억이 작동하는 방식에 대한 이론적 논의를 바탕으 로 예이츠의 “1916년 부활절 봉기”를 분석한다. 기억과 망각, 기념과 반기념이라는 대 립적 개념의 긴장을 통해 희생자들에 대한 예이츠의 양가적이고 분열적인 욕망을 읽 어낸다. Commemoration is an unfinished living process and the meanings of monuments always evolve as each generation brings new horizons and understandings to them. With an eye toward such critical issues commemoration and memory raise, this article examines in what follows how W. B. Yeats performs an act of commemoration in “Easter 1916” and how his mixed impulses and self-divisive impulses are textualized into the poem.

        (Un)Masking Red Hanrahan : Reconsidering Yeats as a Short Story Writer (for the late Professor Daniel Albright)

        예이츠연구에서소외된 레드한라한스토리 읽기를통해초기 예이츠문학 의 면모와 이후 변화 발전하는 예이츠 시학의 뿌리를 살펴본다. 레드 한라한 스토리는 단 순히아일랜드의 전승민담과 신화를바탕으로 민족주의자로서의 예이츠의 면모를 보여주기보다, 작가 개인의 창조적변용과끊임없이 변화하고 진화하는 예술적 재능을 보여주는 예라 할 수 있다. Confronted with the questions of why the study of Stories of Red Hanrahan still remains a relatively uncharted territory in the field and whether this overdue interest in and scholarly inattention to the stories can ever symptomatically point to a direction for a future Yeats studies to take, this article examines Yeats as a short story writer alongside the discussion of the stories. My argument here is that Red Hanrahan stands in for Yeats as a poet who is feeling his way in his own Romantic quest as a “rebel.” Such a poet is deeply rooted in the folkloric tradition but recreates himself to be “modern,” “innovative,” and “shocking” as well. It is the way in which Yeats at once masks and unmasks Red Hanrahan, not completely severed from the Irish communal folkloric tradition but figuring as a Romantic poet who emerges at a moment of national crisis with his passionate intensity and uncompromising self-sacrifice that can redeem the sterility or loss of idealism of his culture — a central theme in the writings of his final years.

        A Cartography of Asian American Studies : Reconsidering Transnational Imaginaries in Asian American Studies

        This paper examines how one can come to terms with a transnational imperative by reconsidering the vexing tug-of-war between Asian American studies' turn toward transnationalism and its misgivings about "denationalizing" tendencies of transnationalism Such a stalemate is both symptomatic and determining of a disciplinary unconscious of Asian American studies in its transnational framing since its intrinsic lack of self-reflexivity in problematizing its authority as a producer and purveyor of knowledge paradoxically buttresses the institutional growth of the field and the establishment of its practitioners If Asian American studies, while hailing the "Asian" in its transnational framing within the context of trans-Pacific imaginaries, chooses to continue to speak on behalf of powerlessness from a relative position of power and authority, there is a discrepancy between what Asian Americanists claim to do and what they actually perform in conceiving of a transnational Asian American studies In addition, Asian American studies, vis-ὰ-vis the US dominant culture, cannot but replicate a contemporary transnational dynamic of (re)posirioning of the United States as a central locus of representation and work to consolidate the borders and contours of the "Asian american" as an uncritically "American" as an uncritically "American" identification As a result, Asian american studies runs risk of enriching the mythic expansiveness of America rather than delinking itself from the American national framework With in mind the questions of whose transnationalism is called forth, and who the addressor and the implicit addressee are, this paper seeks to explore how Asian American studies can speak for the "Asian" from a subject position not recognized as authoritative, and how the "Asian" and the "Asian Amerecan" can resognize the reciprocity of each other's gaze without redeeming each side's narcissistic gestures if the name of broadening the field beyond the congines and constraints of region and nation I finally advance the argument that the current phenomenon of transnationalization driven by Asian American studies be articulated through and against the "Asian," thereby explicating what is at stake and what is gained in maintaining or critiquing the distinctions between the Asian and the "Asian American" that are foged in and through interactions, engagements, and conflicts

        What We Know We Don’t Know When Jumping on the Wagon of Transnationalism : What the Transnational Turn Entails in Literary Studies?

        이 논문은 트랜스내셔널 선회가 문학연구에 가져온 영향을 검토한다. 국가의 경계를 넘어 다양한 교차의 흔적들을 추적하는 작업은 국민문학의 범주를 넘 어서는 개별 문학의 진면목을 발견할 수 있게 해준다. 그러나 동시에 이것은 여전히 강고한 민족주의의 영향력과 주변부 문학의 활력과 개별적 특성이라는 문제를 어떻게 풀 것인가 하는 숙제를 남긴다. 이러한 문제의식을 가지고 이 논문은 트랜스내셔널 선 회를 문학연구에 수용함에 있어 발생하는 새로운 가능성과 한계를 동시에 검토한다. It has been trumpeted out that the narrowly focused attention on a single national literature and inattentiveness to its relationship to other literatures are not tenable any more. The recognition of the peculiarly entangled web of border-crossing relationships to other literatures leads to a correspondingly wide variety of critical practices to capture a diverse and hybrid literary dynamics. As such, the “transnational turn” has been instrumental in honing new interpretative practices that are not only expansive but also flexible enough to locate a literature in relation to other national traditions and within a global context. Nonetheless, it remains to be seen whether it is still premature to jump on the bandwagon called transnationalism, given that there is a discrepancy between what transnationalism claims to do and what it actually performs in redefining the parameters of literary studies. Such discrepancy becomes prominent when it comes to transnational studies’ contingencies vis-à-vis the dominant American culture and the US-centered globalization. It is a legitimate concern because the very prefix “trans” in transnationalism more often than not creates the illusion of a move beyond when there has been no such movement in actuality. This article thus examines what the transnational turn entails in literary studies in general and Irish literary studies in particular.

        Yeats/Ireland, Faulkner/Mississippi : A Comparative Reading of Yeatsian and Faulknerian Cultural In-betweeness

        이 논문의 목적은 “문화적 사이성”이라는 유사성에 초점을 맞추어 예이츠 문학과 포크너 문학의 비교문학적 읽기를 시도하는 것이다. 식민주의의 유산과 상호대립적인 종교적 전통 속에서 그 문화적 정체성의 불명확함을 보여주는 것이 예이츠 문학의 특징이라면, 포크너의 문학은 미국/남부라는 대립 속에서 타자화되고 혼종화된 남부의 역사적 유산을 숙명적으로 대면해야 하는 비극성으로 정의될 수 있다. 이 논문은 이러한 두 작가의 균열된 의식이 어떻게 “아일랜드”과 “남부성”을 재정의하며 아일랜드문학과 미국문학의 경계를 교란하는지 논의한다. This article proffers a comparative reading of W. B. Yeats and William Faulkner through the lens of cultural in-betweenness. In accordance with the ambiguities cutting back and forth between colonizer and colonized, and between indigenizing and Anglicizing of language, Yeats’s strained relationship with the Protestant Anglo-Irish and the Catholic Irish is deeply embedded within the Yeatsian sense of uncertainty and dual allegiances. On the other side, Faulkner’s oeuvre captures the ways in which the nation/south imaginative construct and the projection of residual coloniality onto the sign of the South disrupt the conceptual boundaries of center and periphery, colonizing and colonized, and essentialist and hybrid, thereby providing a glimpse of multiple definition of the US south. By taking a detour of a comparative reading as such, this article examines how Yeats and Faulkner redefine the notions of Irishness and southernness by putting their own cultural in-betweenness to the creative use.
