We conducted phylogenetic analyses using multiplexed inter-simple sequence repeat genotyping by sequencing and compared chloroplast DNA sequences among Ardisia japonica, A. pusilla, and morphologically intermediate plants found on Jeju Island, Korea. Our network analysis demonstrated that the intermediate plants were genetically positioned between A. japonica and A. pusilla. Our comparison of the intergenic spacer between the psbA and trnH genes in chloroplast DNA indicated that four nucleotide substitutions separate A. japonica and A. pusilla, whereas the intermediate plants exhibited the A. japonica haplotype. Our results suggest that the intermediate plants on Jeju Island represent a natural hybrid of A. japonica, as the maternal species, and A. pusilla, and that they are attributable to Ardisia×walkeri. This record constitutes the first documented occurrence of the hybrid taxon in Korea.

Study Design: Case-control study. Purpose: To evaluate the surgical magnitude and learning curve of “second-generation” total en bloc spondylectomy (TES). Overview of Literature: In June 2010, we developed second-generation TES combined with tumor-induced cryoimmunology, which does not require autograft harvesting. Methods: TES was performed in 63 patients between June 2010 and September 2013. Three groups of patients were evaluated: 20 undergoing surgery in the first year of development of second-generation TES (group I), 20 in the second year (group II), and 23 in the third year (group III). Patient backgrounds showed no remarkable differences. Operating time, intraoperative blood loss, blood transfusion, and postoperative C-reactive protein and creatine phosphokinase were compared among the groups. Results: Mean±standard deviation operating time was 486±130 minutes in group I, 441±85 minutes in group II, and 396±75 minutes in group III. The time was significantly shorter in group III than in group I (p <0.05). Intraoperative blood loss was 901±646 mL in group I, 433±177 mL in group II, and 411±167 mL in group III. Blood loss was significantly lower in groups II and III than in group I (p <0.01). Transfusion was not required in 20 of 23 patients in group III, and mean C-reactive protein levels on postoperative day 3 were significantly lower in this group than in group I (6.12 mg/L vs. 10.07 mg/L; p <0.05). Postoperative creatine phosphokinase levels did not differ among the groups. Conclusions: TES is associated with a significant learning curve. Thus, second-generation TES can no longer be considered highly invasive.
Effect of Carotenoides on the in vitro Aggregation of Bacteriochlorophyll e
Hirabayashi, Hiroki,Ohmura, Satoshi,Ishii, Takasada,Uehara, Kaku Korean Society of Photoscience 2002 Journal of Photosciences Vol.9 No.2
In order to investigate effect of the carotenoids (Car) on aggregation of Bacterochlorophyll (BChl) in chlorosome, we studied the spectral difference in aggregates of BChl e formed in the absence and presence of a few kinds of Car in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) -water solution. The absorption spectra of aggregates made of only BChl e and those made of a mixture of BChl e and Car were almost the same. However, the kinetics and circular dichroism (CD) spectra of aggregate of these were markedly different by kind of Car. Specifically, the rate of aggregation for a mixture of BChl e and isorenietene that contains phenyl as end groupe was faster than that for only BChl e. CD spectra of aggregates made of a mixture of BChl e and isorenietene dramatically changed compared to that made of only BChl e. We propose that BChl might form several kinds of rod-like supramolecular structures to in the presence of some kind of Car in chlorosome.
Photoadaptation of Green Sulfur Photosynthetic Bacteria Chlorobium phaeobacteroides
Hirabayashi, Hiroki,Ohmura, Satoshi,Ishii, Takasada,Takaichi, Shinichi,Uehara, Kaku Korean Society of Photoscience 2002 Journal of Photosciences Vol.9 No.2
Photoadaptation of Chlorobium (Cb.) phaeobacteroides was investigated under dim and strong light intensity. Absorption spectra of these whole cellIs were different each other. The Soret band intensity and the Qy bandwidth of BChl e in c디l grown under dim light intensity were smaller and more broadened than those under strong light intensity. From HPLC analysis of the pigments, total carotenoid (Car) / bacterochorolphyll (BChl) e ratio of cell increased wi1h increase of light intensities. But camposition of BChl e hamologs almost unchanged. Cb. phaeobacteroides contains 11 kinds of Car including isorenieratene and beta-isorenieratene as major Car. The campositions of Car were different for cells grown under dim and strong light intensities. In conclusion, Cb. phaeobacteroides changes total amount and canposition of Car to adapt various light intensities, while homolog canposition of BChle unchange.

Study Design: Single-center retrospective study.Purpose: We aimed to explore the postoperative prognostic factors for spinal intramedullary ependymoma.Overview of Literature: Ependymoma (World Health Organization grade II) is the most frequent intramedullary spinal tumor and is treated by total resection. However, postoperative deterioration of motor function occasionally occurs. Methods: Eighty patients who underwent surgical resection at Keio University and Fujita Health University in Tokyo, Japan between 2003 and 2015 with more than 2 years of follow-up were enrolled. A good surgical result was defined as an improvement in the modified McCormick Scale score by one grade or more or having the same clinical grade as was observed preoperatively. Meanwhile, a poor result was defined as a reduction in the McCormick Scale score of one grade or more or remaining in grade IV or V at final follow-up. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses of the following factors were performed in the two groups: sex, age, preoperative Visual Analog Scale (VAS), tumor location, the extent of tumor resection, hemosiderin caps, cavity length, and tumor length on magnetic resonance imaging. Results: At final follow-up, 15 patients were included in the poor results group and 65 in the good results group. In the univariate analysis, the factors related to poor results were as follows: higher age, preoperative McCormick Scale score severity, higher preoperative VAS, thoracic location, hemosiderin capped, and non-gross total resection (GTR). A multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted and showed that age, worse preoperative McCormick Scale score, and non-GTR were significant factors for poor prognosis. Conclusions: The independent risk factors for motor deterioration after ependymoma resection were age, worse preoperative McCormick Scale score, and non-GTR. Early surgery for patients with even mild neurological disorders could facilitate functional outcomes. These results may contribute to determining the optimal timing of surgery for spinal intramedullary ependymoma.
