Objective: This study aims to measure working memory and decision-making ability in the enhanced virtual mall environment based on the embodied cognition theory. Background: Various technologies have been emerged to allow more precise measurements of patients" behavioral data. Therefore, we have developed the Virtual Mall environments based on the embodied cognition theory, to provide the possibilities of evaluation indicators other than those given by the traditional neuropsychological tests in the virtual environments. Method: Based on field observation, we developed the self-checkout system to measure the executive functions, and the results of performance were categorized by MET tests. Finally, we evaluated the possible form of clinical programs based on professional comments by the HCI and medical experts. Results: Four HCI experts reviewed eight elements of usability, and five medical experts assessed the potential of this program as a clinical purpose. Conclusion: This suggests that the self-checkout system developed in this study has potential as a clinical program. Application: These results of this study will be useful as a foundational work to create the VR scenarios and VR environment in neuropsychological tests for the measurement of working memory and decision making.

Objective: This study aims to develop a measurement tool for the shifting ability as an Executive Functions (EF) in Virtual Environment (VE) based on the theory of embodied cognition. Background: Most of conventional EF measurement tools show an 18-20% difference between measured value through the questionnaires and ability of daily practices, which leads to dysfunctional problems in everyday life. Method: We designed a shifting measurement tool in VE. A measurement tool was developed by creating the scenario for organizing books on a bookshelf according to specific rules through an expert-based evaluation in a VE. (Color, Shape, Category) Using this measurement tool, we gained the tasks score data, duration, and the behavioral data of hand and head from 12 healthy adults(20-30s) and analyzed the data. Results: Using this Shifting measurement tool, we gain the behavioral data of hands and head, and tasks scores data from 12 participants. It is compared with the behavioral data of hand and head movement according to the task score. Conclusion: Findings of this study could be used to evaluate existing measurements and enhance a newly developed shifting measurement tool.

Objective: The aim is to develop a system that can measure the executive functions in daily life away from the classical executive functions measurement system. Background: The Tower of London test, one of the classics of executive functions tests, is mainly used to measure planning. Although it is available for all ages and has the advantage of being able to analyze various factors, it also has the same disadvantages as many accompanying sub-tests. Thus, we improved and developed a Measuring System for the Executive Functions in Virtual Kitchen Environment. Design: The system has a scenario like "You have to clean up the kitchen before your friend comes.!" On the kitchen table is a post-it with the name of the kitchenware, and various kitchenware. Users should clean up the kitchen as soon as possible and ticktack sounds are played to make the situation aware. The Data collect the number of movements (grab, release times), the time is taken, the moving distance in the kitchen, data on the trajectory of the hand, and the number of matches between words and objects. Results: An expert evaluation was conducted. The advantage of being able to measure planning in daily life from a medical perspective and the proper VR environment setting from an HCI perspective have been verified. Conclusion: Development of the measuring system for the executive functions in a virtual kitchen environment is of significance to be able to measure executive functions based on actual daily life. The purpose of this study is to develop a scenario for deriving scientifically explanatory behavioral data on the phenomenon that inhibitory ability is embodied as behavior in real life context and to develop a virtual reality system to systemize it. When the inhibition among executive function is decreased, self-control in real life becomes difficult, leading to various behavioral disorders and negative psychological states. Traditional Stroop tests, known as tools to assess them, have low ecological validity and report results that do not match the actual performance of individuals in real life. In order to create a scenario that reflects the real life context as a method of evaluating the ecological deterrence ability, we reviewed the literature on behavioral phenomena in which cognitive ability was embodied, and developed a VR system that applied dynamic stimulation and interaction using virtual reality. This VR system is an application study to develop a tool to evaluate the performance of inhibition ability seen in real life ecologically. It is expected that various behavioral data can be discovered by physically systematizing phenomenological behavior that is the basis of embodied cognitive theory in virtual environment.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to modify the stroop test to suit the virtual reality driving simulation environment and develop it as a tool to measure the user"s executive function. Background: With the advent of an ultra-aging society, cognitive impairment of the elderly with neurodegenerative diseases is increasing. Accordingly, new cognitive function measurement tools that reflect embodied cognitive theory are being actively studied. As such a tool, a virtual reality environment in which perception-cognition-action can be combined is being used. Method: This scenario was developed to proceed by dividing into three-stage tasks similar to the existing stroop test in virtual reality. However, we changed the color and text of the stroop test to the direction and color of the car"s navigation. Results: Expert evaluation was conducted, and the originality and usability of the vr experiment were highly evaluated, and the complexity and user feedback of the experiment were evaluated low. Conclusion: Scenarios should be modified based on expert evaluation, user evaluation need to be conducted, and we will verify validity.

Objective: Among the daily life tasks that require complex cognitive skills, the goal is to implement a Virtual Bus boarding Task(VBT) and develop content that measures Working memory and Planning. Background Research: Currently, tests for daily tasks using VR are being developed in various ways, including supermarkets, money tasks, and bus boarding tasks. Digit Span Task(DST) is a tool for measuring verbal working memory. Working memory was measured by memorizing and maintaining the numbers and digits presented. Trail Making Test (TMT) measures planning ability. Measure the cognitive areas of processing speed, sequencing, mental flexibility, and visual-motor ability. Method: The daily tasks were implemented in VR and tasks were designed based on existing measuring tools. Results: Although the expert evaluation evaluated that the adequacy of the VR environment setting and experimentation of VBT was appropriate, it received the opinion that it was necessary to adjust the cultural differences and difficulty levels. Conclusion: Pilot testing is needed to overcome the difficulty and cultural differences of experiments. Planning Ability in Tower of London and a Virtual Kitchen Environment: in View of Embodied Cognition
Hye Min Lee(이혜민),Jieun Han(한지은),Hojin Choi(최호진),Prie Yannick,Toinon Vigier,Samuel Bluteau,Gyu Hyun Kwon(권규현) 대한인간공학회 2020 대한인간공학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2020 No.10
The Tower of London (TOL) Test is a neuropsychological tool designed to assess mental planning ability (Shallice, 1982), which is an important domain in executive functions. However, neuropsychological assessments that reflect the classic theory of cognition, such as the Tower of London, have limitations. As embodied cognitive theory provides an important theoretical foundation for executive function, the need to develop and adjust tool kits to measuring Executive Function is emerging. Also, although the test can be sensitive to frontal brain damage, it can be difficult to measure everyday functions due to its low ecological validity. We suggest a new clinical approach that the Tower of London in the virtual environment maintains a simulation of the embodied body and real-life space around it.
