• Troubling Gender and Genre in The Trials & Joys of Marriage

        Salisbury, Eve 한국중세르네상스영문학회 2003 중세영문학 Vol.11 No.1

This study begins with a two-fold premise: 1) that ideological messages are imbued in both gender and genre, and 2) that these two integrally related categories are affected by extraliterary forces. Judith Butler's theory of gender performativity is applied to the operations of genre in Middle English texts---Dame Sirith, the Interludium de clerico et puella, the Prohemy of a Mariage Betwixt an Olde Man and a Youge Wife, and the Counsail, the Wright’s Chaste Wife, and two works of advice, How the Goode Wife Taught Hyr Doughter, and How the Goode Man Taght Hys Son---in order to shed light on generic change and to illuminate the conditions necessary for genre to remain static and fixed. Ultimately, the essay argues that an understanding of generic change enables us to understand just how troubled gender could be in the Middle Ages.

YOUNG TABLEAUX, CANONICAL BASES, AND THE GINDIKIN-KARPELEVICH FORMULA

        이규환,Ben Salisbury 대한수학회 2014 대한수학회지 Vol.51 No.2

A combinatorial description of the crystal B(∞) for finite- dimensional simple Lie algebras in terms of certain Young tableaux was developed by J. Hong and H. Lee. We establish an explicit bijection between these Young tableaux and canonical bases indexed by Lusztig’s parametrization, and obtain a combinatorial rule for expressing the Gindi- kin-Karpelevich formula as a sum over the set of Young tableaux.

Design Considerations for Long Travel Z-Axis Ultra-Precision Positioning Stage

Tarek Mohammad,Shaun Salisbury 한국정밀공학회 2012 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol. No.

Considering the recent technological advances in precision engineering and the concurrent progresses in biomedical research including numerous surgical operations, the development of precision positioning systems capable of executing large travel in vertical direction with nanometer scale resolution or simply Z nano-positioner has become inevitable. The motion in Z-axis is typically achieved by mounting a planner stage on an L-bracket which often has low force capacity and lacks compactness. In many applications, compactness is desired, yet long travel ranges are highly demanded. The actuator must provide enough output force to lift a mass mounted on it along with positioning platform weight against the effect of gravity. Therefore, design criteria and features for a novel compact positioner capable of lifting mass with long stroke and nanometer accuracy have been presented and discussed. In the designs, two major challenges have been faced and solved: proper installation of the actuator within the stage and perfect alignment of the actuator to the stage. An embedded actuator can provide the benefits to the structure of being realistically compact and the friction surfaces not being exposed to dust or any other contamination.

Examining Legacies of Unsuccessful Olympic Bids: Evidence from a Cross-Case Analysis

Becca Leopkey,Paul Salisbury,Cem Tinaz 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2021 Journal of Global Sport Management Vol.6 No.3

The purpose of this paper was to explore the legacies of failed bids in applicant and candidature cities for the Olympic Games. More specifically, we were interested in understanding 1) what are the legacies from unsuccessful Olympic Games bids, and 2) what are the prominent issues related to legacy associated with failed bidding attempts? In order to accomplish this, an iterative case study of three previous Olympic bid cities: Manchester (1996, 2000), Chicago (2016) and Istanbul (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2020) were used to better understand this particular phenomenon. Twelve different failed bid legacy themes across the three cases emerged including: brand perception, coordination, community, economic, environmental, knowledge, personal, policy, psychological, relationships, structural, and urban. In addition to the broad legacy themes, two additional failed bid legacy issues were identified and elucidated. They included failed bid promises and a lack differentiation between bid and event legacy.

Augmented reality and dynamic infrared thermography for perforator mapping in the anterolateral thigh

Cifuentes, Ignacio Javier,Dagnino, Bruno Leonardo,Salisbury, Maria Carolina,Perez, Maria Eliana,Ortega, Claudia,Maldonado, Daniela Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surge 2018 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.45 No.3

Dynamic infrared thermography (DIRT) has been used for the preoperative mapping of cutaneous perforators. This technique has shown a positive correlation with intraoperative findings. Our aim was to evaluate the accuracy of perforator mapping with DIRT and augmented reality using a portable projector. For this purpose, three volunteers had both of their anterolateral thighs assessed for the presence and location of cutaneous perforators using DIRT. The obtained image of these "hotspots" was projected back onto the thigh and the presence of Doppler signals within a 10-cm diameter from the midpoint between the lateral patella and the anterior superior iliac spine was assessed using a handheld Doppler device. Hotspots were identified in all six anterolateral thighs and were successfully projected onto the skin. The median number of perforators identified within the area of interest was 5 (range, 3-8) and the median time needed to identify them was 3.5 minutes (range, 3.3-4.0 minutes). Every hotspot was correlated to a Doppler sound signal. In conclusion, augmented reality can be a reliable method for transferring the location of perforators identified by DIRT onto the thigh, facilitating its assessment and yielding a reliable map of potential perforators for flap raising.

      • Decomposing P300 into correlates of genetic risk and current symptoms in schizophrenia: An inter-trial variability analysis

        Kim, Minah,Lee, Tak Hyung,Kim, Ji-Hun,Hong, Hanwoom,Lee, Tae Young,Lee, Youngjo,Salisbury, Dean F.,Kwon, Jun Soo Elsevier 2018 Schizophrenia research Vol.192 No.-

Abstract

Background

The P300 event-related potential (ERP) component, which reflects cognitive processing, is a candidate biomarker for schizophrenia. However, the role of P300 in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia remains unclear because averaged P300 amplitudes reflect both genetic predisposition and current clinical status. Thus, we sought to identify which aspects of P300 are associated with genetic risk versus symptomatic status via an inter-trial variability analysis.

Methods

Auditory P300, clinical symptoms, and neurocognitive function assessments were obtained from forty-five patients with schizophrenia, thirty-two subjects at genetic high risk (GHR), thirty-two subjects at clinical high risk (CHR), and fifty-two healthy control (HC) participants. Both conventional averaging and inter-trial variability analyses were conducted for P300, and results were compared across groups using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Pearson's correlation was utilized to determine associations among inter-trial variability for P300, current symptoms and neurocognitive status.

Results

Average P300 amplitude was reduced in the GHR, CHR, and schizophrenia groups compared with that in the HC group. P300 inter-trial variability was elevated in the CHR and schizophrenia groups but relatively normal in the GHR and HC groups. Furthermore, P300 inter-trial variability was significantly related to negative symptom severity and neurocognitive performance results in schizophrenia patients.

Conclusions

These results suggest that P300 amplitude is an endophenotype for schizophrenia and that greater inter-trial variability of P300 is associated with more severe negative and cognitive symptoms in schizophrenia patients.
