The Effect of Board Composition and Ownership Structure on Firm Value: Evidence from Jordan

Rafat Salameh SALAMEH(Rafat Salameh SALAMEH ),Osama J. AL-NSOUR(Osama J. AL-NSOUR ),Khalid Munther LUTFI(Khalid Munther LUTFI ),Zaynab Hassan ALNABULSI(Zaynab Hassan ALNABULSI ),Eyad Abdel-Halym HYASA 한국유통과학회 2023 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.10 No.2

This study aims to investigate the effect of the composition of the board and ownership structure on a firm’s value in Jordanian firms. Specifically, it aims to determine the effect of board size, (CEO) duality, and family, foreign, institutional, and government ownership on a firm’s value. An ordinary least square regression (OLS) was employed to examine the study hypotheses in a sample of 35 Jordanian industrial firms (175 firm-year observation) for a period of five years from 2016–2020. As measured by Tobin’s Q (Q ratio) and marketto- book (MB ratio) for Jordanian industrial firms listed on Amman Stock Exchange (ASE). The result found that foreign ownership, institutional ownership, and family ownership have a significant and positive effect on firm value. By contrast, government ownership does not have a significant effect on firm value. With respect to board composition (CEO duality and board size), the study results found no evidence to support the effect of board composition on firm value. The study recommended the concerned authorities with several recommendations, most notably: taking the necessary measures to ensure the continuity and growth of family businesses because of their positive impact on the value of the company and economic growth, spreading awareness about how governance protects the interests of investors.

Dependence of the Thermal Conductivity of PMMA, PS and PE on Temperature and Crystallinity

        B. Salameh,S. Yasin,D. Abu Fara,A. M. Zihlif 한국고분자학회 2021 폴리머 Vol.45 No.2

This study presents measurements of the thermal conductivity as a function of temperature for different polymers: poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene (PE). The effects of varying the polymer structure, sample thickness and degree of crystallinity on the thermal conductivity are reported. The thermal conductivity increases with temperature for amorphous and semicrystalline polymers with crystallinity less than 50%, and decreases with temperature for semicrystalline polymers with crystallinity larger than 50%. Moreover, the thermal conductivity of the crystalline polymer is found to be larger than that of the amorphous polymer at the same temperature. The contact resistance of PMMA and PE could be calculated from the sample thickness dependence of the thermal resistance.

Banking on Ethics vs the Ethos of Banking: Ethical Values, Business Practices and the Development of the Islamic Financial Industry in the Middle East through the Fate of One of its Founding Banking Groups

        ( Kifah Salameh ) 부산외국어대학교 지중해지역원 2012 The Mediterranean Review Vol.5 No.2

This paper will discuss the development of Islamic banking in the GCC as a concrete industry - and not as a concept - by looking at business practices from a practitioner`s point of view. It will start by setting the context of the emergence of Islamic banking in the GCC. Through a brief case study, it will then describe the broad lines of the development of the DMI Group - the first Islamic financial company created in the MENA region that was not government-funded - from its establishment by HRH Prince Mohammed al Faisal to the corporate shift initiated at the turn of the century and finally to its eventual demise in the aftermath of the global financial crisis. The last part of the article will try to understand the mismatches between business practices and market expectations that could explain the DMI Group`s downfall, and their relevance to the development of the Islamic banking industry.

The best vein to be accessed based on descriptive study of dorsal metacarpal vein

        Muna A. Salameh,Amjad T. Shatarat,Darwish H. Badran,Mhmoud A. Abu-Abeeleh,Islam M. Massad,Amjad M. Bani-Hani 대한해부학회 2019 Anatomy & Cell Biology Vol.52 No.4

It is well known that the most common sites for venous access are the superficial veins of the upper limb, particularly dorsal metacarpal veins and median cubital vein. Although dorsal metacarpal veins are the first choice for venous cannulation, there is scarce information about their anatomic variation. Hence, detailed anatomical information about these veins will improve the anatomic knowledge of the health care providers. Subsequently, this study was designed to study the dorsal metacarpal veins and to determine the most prominent dorsal metacarpal vein. A cross sectional study of 402 subjects (804 hands), was prepared to study the superficial veins on the dorsum of the hand among Jordanian students and staff of one of the major governmental medical colleges in Jordan, by using infrared illumination system. The obtained data was analyzed according to sex, sidedness, and handedness. Six locations of the most prominent dorsal metacarpal veins were identified. There was a significant relation between both females and males and the most prominent dorsal metacarpal vein (P=0.01). For the first time this study identified the most common location of the most prominent dorsal metacarpal vein in the fourth intermetacarpal space.

Price- and Rate-aware Multi-channel Spectrum Access for Profit Enhancement in Opportunistic Networks with QoS Guarantees

Haythem Bany Salameh,Ghaleb El Refae 한국통신학회 2022 ICT Express Vol.8 No.1

Cognitive radio (CR) is a key technology that can enable opportunistic spectrum access, which enables secondary users (SUs) to dynamically exploit the under-utilized channels in the licensed spectrum, owned by primary radio networks (PRNs), referred to as dominant firms. Such sharing is subject to interference, SU QoS and cost constraints, in which SUs should not introduce harmful interference to PR users, achieve QoS rate demand and pay a price for using the licensed PR spectrum. The price of accessing idle PR channels depends on the level of channel utilization and price paid by PRs to access the channels, while the amount of needed spectrum to serve the rate demand of each SU heavily depends on the link-quality of the various channels. In this paper, the spectrum assignment problem in a CR network (CRN), referred to as follower firm, is investigated with the target of serving the largest possible number of SUs with the least possible total price paid to the PRNs (highest CRN profit) while being aware of the time-varying achieved transmission rate and level of utilization of the various PR channels. The problem is mathematically expressed as an optimization problem with the goal of maximizing the number of served SUs and the profit made by the CRN, which has been shown to be a binary linear programming (BLP) problem. Due to the high complexity of solving such optimization, we use the well-known sequential-fixing optimization method to obtain sub-optimal solutions. Simulation results indicate that our channel-assignment optimization significantly increases the CRN profit by reducing the price paid to the PRNs while achieving comparable performance offered by previous price-unaware protocols.

ALNABULSI, Zaynab Hassan,ALRAWASHDEH, Salah Turki,LUTFI, Khalid Munther,SALAMEH, Rafat Salameh Korea Distribution Science Association 2022 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.9 No.9

This study explored the effectiveness of the measures taken by the Jordanian Central Bank embedded in its monetary policy in encouraging banks to support investment. It aimed to explore the impact of this monetary policy on supporting credit-related decisions and the monetary policies that aim to support investment in Jordan. The targeted tools of the monetary policy are: (Overnight Deposit Window Rate, money supply, and exports). The researchers carried out an analysis to measure the effectiveness of the monetary policy in fostering investment in Jordan during the period 1992-2020. They carried out the time series analysis. They explored the stationarity of the time series. They used the ARDL model. It was found that the Overnight Deposit Window Rate has a negative significant effect on the gross fixed capital formation. It was found that the money supply has a positive insignificant effect on gross fixed capital formation. The researcher recommends using Overnight Deposit Window Rate in a manner that is consistent with the intended investment-related goals.

Jamming Resilient Multi-Channel Transmission for Cognitive Radio IoT-based Medical Networks

        Khadr, Monette,Salameh, Haythem Bany,Ayyash, Moussa S.,Elgala, Hany,Almajali, Sufyan 한국통신학회 2022 Journal of communications and networks Vol.24 No.6

The era of the Internet-of-things (IoT) comes withtremendous burdens on pre-existing network infrastructures andprotocols due to spectrum scarcity and reliability concerns. Cognitive radio (CR) technology is proposed for IoT applica-tions to alleviate the spectrum scarcity paradigm. In CR-IoT-based networks, the IoT devices/nodes share the spectrum withprimary users (PUs). However, in order not to interfere with PUscommunications and to conform with the elevating throughputrequirements, efficient multi-radio/multi-channel assignment al-gorithms are required. Additionally, in order to ensure reliabletransmission, algorithms need to be resilient to jamming attacks, which have detrimental impacts on network performance. In thispaper, parallel-channel security-aware medium access control(PCS-MAC) is proposed as a probabilistic-based jamming re-silient multi-channel assignment algorithm proposed for medicalnetworks. PCS-MAC considers primary user activity, channelconditions, jamming attack levels, and data-rate requirementsto provide spectrally efficient data transmission between CR-IoT nodes subject to delay constraints under jamming attacks toassure the delivery of time-critical patient data. The performanceof PCS-MAC is practically validated using the open large-scalefuture Internet-of-things (FIT) IoT-LAB testbed. Practical resultsshow that our proposed algorithm significantly enhances networkperformance, yielding throughput rates that supersedes the state-of-the-art algorithms presented in literature.
