Occupational Health and Safety in the Turkish Fisheries and Aquaculture; a Statistical Evaluation on a Neglected Industry

Soykan Ozan 한국산업안전보건공단 산업안전보건연구원 2023 Safety and health at work Vol.14 No.3

Background: Fisheries and aquaculture are statistically acknowledged to be among the most dangerous occupations. Yet, industrial safety and health precautions against occupational accidents within the sector are not sufficiently implemented in many parts of the world. The present study aims to provide a quantified overview of work accident statistics in the Turkish fisheries and aquaculture industry. Methods: This article presents an overview of reported injuries and fatalities in the Turkish fisheries and aquaculture industries from 2006 to 2020. Incident, permanent incapacity, and fatality rates were calculated, and the difference between fisheries and aquaculture was statistically examined. Results: The overall incident, permanent incapacity, and fatality rates were 449.4, 4.7, and 5.7 per 100,000 worker years, respectively, over the 15-year period. With these fatality rates, fisheries and aquaculture are two of the industries with the highest fatality rates among comparable industries in Turkey. Incident rates in fisheries and aquaculture indicated that aquaculture work is more dangerous and risky. The data set includes 25 fatalities and 22 permanent incapacity cases over 15 years and shows an increase in fatality rates and occupational accidents in the last 8 years. Conclusion: present study showed that the quality of data and reporting in the Turkish fisheries and aquaculture industries including occupational illnesses, must be improved in order to be more preventative and to develop efficient safety management in the sector. Incentives for providing thorough data on occupational incidents must be enhanced to improve occupational safety awareness in Turkish fisheries and aquaculture.

Mehmet Gumus,Y¨uksel Soykan 한국전산응용수학회 2017 Journal of applied mathematics & informatics Vol.35 No.3

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the local asymptotic stability of equilibria, the periodic nature of solutions, the existence of unbounded solutions and the global behavior of solutions of the fractional difference equation xn+1 = αxn−(k+1) β + γxp n−kxq n−(k+2) , n = 0, 1, ... where the parameters α, β, γ, p, q are non-negative numbers and the initial values x−(k+2),x−(k+1), ..., x−1, x0 ∈ R+.

Novel Solid Phase Extraction Procedure for Some Trace Elements in Various Samples Prior to Their Determinations by FAAS

Sacmaci, Srife,Kartal, Senol,Sacmaci, Mustafa,Soykan, Cengiz Korean Chemical Society 2011 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.32 No.2

A novel method that utilizes poly(5-methyl-2-thiozyl methacrylamide-co-2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid-co-divinylbenzene) [MTMAAm/AMPS/DVB] as a solid-phase extractant was developed for simultaneous preconcentration of trace Cd(II), Co(II), Cr(III), Cu(II), Fe(III), Mn(II), Ni(II), Pb(II), and Zn(II) prior to the measurement by flame atomic absorpiton spectrometry (FAAS). Experimental conditions for effective adsorption of the metal ions were optimized using column procedures. The optimum pH value for the simultaneously separation of the metal ions on the new adsorbent was 2.5. Effects of concentration and volume of elution solution, sample flow rate, sample volume and interfering ions on the recovery of the analytes were investigated. A high preconcentration factor, 100, and low relative standard deviation values, $\leq$1.5% (n = 10), were obtained. The detection limits (${\mu}gL^{-1}$) based on the 3s criterion were 0.18 for Cd(II), 0.11 for Co(II), 0.07 for Cr(III), 0.12 for Cu(II), 0.18 for Fe(III), 0.67 for Mn(II), 0.13 for Ni(II), 0.06 for Pb(II), and 0.09 for Zn(II). The validation of the procedure was performed by the analysis of two certified reference materials. The presented method was applied to the determination of the analytes in various environmental samples with satisfactory results.

      • Identification of a Novel BRCA2 and CHEK2 A-C-G-C Haplotype in Turkish Patients Affected with Breast Cancer

        Haytural, Hazal,Yalcinkaya, Nazli,Akan, Gokce,Arikan, Soykan,Ozkok, Elif,Cakmakoglu, Bedia,Yaylim, Ilhan,Aydin, Makbule,Atalar, Fatmahan Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.5

Background: Many breast cancers are caused by certain rare and familial mutations in the high or moderate penetrance genes BRCA1, BRCA2 and CHEK2. The aim of this study was to examine the allele and genotype frequencies of seven mutations in BRCA1, BRCA2 and CHEK2 genes in breast cancer patients and to investigate their isolated and combined associations with breast cancer risk. Methods: We genotyped seven mutations in BRCA1, BRCA2 and CHEK2 genes and then analyzed single variations and haplotype associations in 106 breast cancer patients and 80 healthy controls. Results: We found significant associations in the analyses of CHEK2- 1100delC (p=0.001) and BRCA1-5382insC (p=0.021) mutations in breast cancer patients compared to controls. The highest risk was observed among breast cancer patients carrying both CHEK2-1100delC and BRCA2- Met784Val mutations (OR=0.093; 95%CI 0.021-0.423; p=0.001). We identified one previously undescribed BRCA2 and a CHEK2 four-marker haplotype of A-C-G-C which was overrepresented ($X^2$=7.655; p=0.0057) in the patient group compared to controls. Conclusion: In this study, we identified a previously undescribed BRCA2 and CHEK2 A-C-G-C haplotype in association with the breast cancer in our population. Our results further suggest that the CHEK2-1100delC mutation in combination with BRCA2-Met784Val may lead to an unexpected high risk which needs to be confirmed in larger cohorts in order to better understand their role in the development and prognosis of breast cancer.

Goldenhar's Syndrome (Oculo-Auriculo-Vertebral Dysplasia) with Congenital Facial Nerve Palsy

        Nilufer Berker,Golge Acaroglu,Emel Soykan 연세대학교의과대학 2004 Yonsei medical journal Vol.45 No.1

Goldenhar's Syndrome (oculo-auriculo-vertebral dysplasia) is a wide spectrum of congenital anomalies that involves structures arising from the first and second branchial arches. In this report, a case of a male infant, with the features of hemi facial microsomia, anotia, vertebral anomalies, congenital facial nerve palsy and lagophthalmos is described. Although the syndrome itself is not uncommon, the presence of congenital facial nerve palsy, which has been reported in rare cases, prompted this case report.
