Teaching qualitative methodologies as praxis
Young Chun Kim(Young Chun Kim),Seungho Choi(Seungho Choi),Jung-Hoon Jung(Jung-Hoon Jung) 아시아질적탐구학회 2022 아시아질적탐구 Vol.1 No.1
The purpose of this article is to provide the appearance and meaning of teaching qualitative research in South Korea wherein whose academic culture has been highly influenced, if not dominated, by the West. In this respect, the authors conceptualize the experiences of teaching qualitative research to undergraduate and graduate students in South Korea. To do so, three authors have collected stories, experiences, and reflections of teaching qualitative methodologies, and then categorized their reflections of these experiences. The stories the authors tell entail five themes as follows; teaching qualitative research as (a) dangerous practice, (b) painful practice, (c) horrifying practice, (d) educative practice, and (e) brave practice. Each practice, as metaphors, illuminate the meanings of the practices of teaching qualitative research in South Korea. The authors conclude the article with questions to provoke Korean researchers to rethink and reflect on their practices of teaching and conducting qualitative research in the Korean context and beyond.

Measuring North Korean Marketization: An Index Approach
Seungho Jung,양문수,Byung-Yeon Kim 경남대학교 극동문제연구소 2022 ASIAN PERSPECTIVE Vol.46 No.2
Since the traditional central planning system virtually collapsed in the 1990s, growth of marketization has become the most prominent feature of the North Korean economy. In this article, we evaluate the development of de facto and de jure marketization of the 2000s in three dimensions of price liberalization, privatization, and financial system development. Accordingly, we construct a marketization index using the survey results of North Korean refugees and expert evaluations of the North Korean economy. The marketization level generally increased over the years despite the unfavorable foreign and domestic environments such as international sanctions and the anti-market polices of the mid-2000s. Among the three evaluation categories, price liberalization has advanced the most, whereas financial system development has developed the least. In particular, de facto privatization has rapidly expanded since Kim Jong Un came into power. However, from the economic reform perspective, the overall institutionalization level of the informal economy in North Korea still remains low compared to those of former socialist economies.
Evaluation of a Decade of North Korean Economy under the Kim Jong-un Regime
Seungho Jung 이화여자대학교 통일학연구원 2022 Journal of peace and unification Vol.12 No.1
This research attempts to evaluate the economic performance of North Korea for the past 10 years since Kim Jong Un came to power in 2011. The Kim Jong Un regime was able to maintain a steady economic growth for the first six years despite the challenging initial environment that it had faced. The growing overseas demand following the high growth of the Chinese economy and economic policies utilizing the market sector are likely the main forces of this steady growth. However, the North Korean economy is currently facing arguably the worst economic crisis since the 1990s caused by tightening UN economic sanctions since 2017 and subsequent border lockdowns due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The fundamental cause of the economic breakdown lies in the Byungjin (Parallel Development) policy, a policy that involves the simultaneous development of nuclear weapons and economy, which has been the main strategy of the regime since 2012. The structural damages in industrial sectors are expected to continue should the policy direction of the regime remains unchanged, which can aggravate the import of intermedi-ate goods and capital goods.
