Contemporary Activities and Self-understandings of Japanese Buddhist Ordained Women

This paper looks at social and religious conditions that influence(d) the situation of Buddhist ordained women in modern and contemporary Japan, i.e. from the Meiji era (1868-1912)up to the present. These include the legalization of clerical marriage in 1872-73 which diversified the possible ways of living for clerics and created the difficult position of temple priests’wives. Equally relevant are the gendered structures of Buddhist institutions, each school's training programs that must be completed to become a fully ordained cleric, and trans-denominational women’s associations that foster solidarity irrespective of Buddhist school, position and position and clerical rank. The final part of the paper presents various ordained women’s opinions concerning clerical marriage and the role of a cleric, in an attempt to illustrate the range of voices and their reflection of each woman’s living circumstances. KEYWORDS Contemporary Japanese Buddhism, Japanese Buddhist nuns, Japanese female priests, Japanese ordained women, clerical marriage 본 논문은 일본의 근현대, 즉 메이지 시대(1868-1912)부터 현재까지 수계 여성의 상황에 영향을 주었고 지금도 영향력이 있는 사회적, 종교적 조건들을 살펴본다. 여기에는 1872-3년 성직자들의 삶의 방식을 다양화시키고 승려의 아내라는 힘든 지위를 만든 성직자 결혼의합법화가 포함된다. 불교 기관의 젠더화 구조, 완전한 성직자가 되기위해 이수해야 하는 각 학교의 훈련 프로그램, 그리고 불교 종파, 직위, 승계僧階에 관계없이 연대를 만들어내는 종파 초월적 여성 협의체도 동등하게 관련이 있다. 논문의 마지막 부분은 성직자의 결혼과 성직자의 역할에 대해 다양한 수계 여성들의 다양한 의견을 제공하는데 이는 그들의 의견의 범위와 생활 조건 반영의 폭을 상세히 드러내기 위한 시도이다.

A group of universities have come together with the aim of designing and developing Small Aperture Robotic Telescopes (SmART) for use by students to observe variable stars and transient follow-ups. The group is deliberating on the components of the robotic system; e.g. the telescope, the mount, the back-end camera, control software, and their integration keeping in mind the scientific objectives. The prototype might then be replicated by all the participating universities to provide round the clock observations from sites spread evenly in longitude across the globe. Progress made so far is reported in this paper.
