The pT-differential inclusive production cross section of the prompt charm-strange meson Ds+ in the rapidity range |y|<0.5 was measured in proton-proton collisions at s=7 TeV at the LHC using the ALICE detector. The analysis was performed on a data sample of 2.98x108 events collected with a minimum-bias trigger. The corresponding integrated luminosity is Lint=4.8 nb-1. Reconstructing the decay Ds+→φπ+, with φ→K-K+, and its charge conjugate, about 480 Ds+/- mesons were counted, after selection cuts, in the transverse momentum range 2<pT<12 GeV/c. The results are compared with predictions from models based on perturbative QCD. The ratios of the cross sections of four D meson species (namely D0, D+, D@?+ and Ds+) were determined both as a function of pT and integrated over pT after extrapolating to full pT range, together with the strangeness suppression factor in charm fragmentation. The obtained values are found to be compatible within uncertainties with those measured by other experiments in e+e-, ep and pp interactions at various centre-of-mass energies.
Mechanisms of antimony adsorption onto soybean stover-derived biochar in aqueous solutions
Vithanage, M.,Rajapaksha, A.U.,Ahmad, M.,Uchimiya, M.,Dou, X.,Alessi, D.S.,Ok, Y.S. Academic Press 2015 Journal of environmental management Vol.151 No.-
Limited mechanistic knowledge is available on the interaction of biochar with trace elements (Sb and As) that exist predominantly as oxoanions. Soybean stover biochars were produced at 300 oC (SBC300) and 700 oC (SBC700), and characterized by BET, Boehm titration, FT-IR, NMR and Raman spectroscopy. Bound protons were quantified by potentiometric titration, and two acidic sites were used to model biochar by the surface complexation modeling based on Boehm titration and NMR observations. The zero point of charge was observed at pH 7.20 and 7.75 for SBC300 and SBC700, respectively. Neither antimonate (Sb(V)) nor antimonite (Sb(III)) showed ionic strength dependency (0.1, 0.01 and 0.001 M NaNO3), indicating inner sphere complexation. Greater adsorption of Sb(III) and Sb(V) was observed for SBC300 having higher -OH content than SBC700. Sb(III) removal (85%) was greater than Sb(V) removal (68%). Maximum adsorption density for Sb(III) was calculated as 1.88 x 10-6 mol m-2. The Triple Layer Model (TLM) successfully described surface complexation of Sb onto soybean stover-derived biochar at pH 4-9, and suggested the formation of monodentate mononuclear and binuclear complexes. Spectroscopic investigations by Raman, FT-IR and XPS further confirmed strong chemisorptive binding of Sb to biochar surfaces.

<P>We report the measurements of correlations between event-by-event fluctuations of amplitudes of anisotropic flow harmonics in nucleus-nucleus collisions, obtained for the first time using a new analysis method based on multiparticle cumulants in mixed harmonics. This novel method is robust against systematic biases originating from nonflow effects and by construction any dependence on symmetry planes is eliminated. We demonstrate that correlations of flow harmonics exhibit a better sensitivity to medium properties than the individual flow harmonics. The new measurements are performed in Pb-Pb collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of root S-NN = 2.76 TeV by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The centrality dependence of correlation between event-by-event fluctuations of the elliptic v(2) and quadrangular v(4) flow harmonics, as well as of anticorrelation between v(2) and triangular v(3) flow harmonics are presented. The results cover two different regimes of the initial state configurations: geometry dominated (in midcentral collisions) and fluctuation dominated (in the most central collisions). Comparisons are made to predictions from Monte Carlo Glauber, viscous hydrodynamics, AMPT, and HIJING models. Together with the existing measurements of the individual flow harmonics the presented results provide further constraints on the initial conditions and the transport properties of the system produced in heavy-ion collisions.</P>

ALICE Collaboration,Abelev, B.,Adam, J.,Adamova, D.,Adare, A.M.,Aggarwal, M.M.,Aglieri Rinella, G.,Agocs, A.G.,Agostinelli, A.,Aguilar Salazar, S.,Ahammed, Z.,Ahmad, N.,Ahmad Masoodi, A.,Ahn, S.A.,Ahn North-Holland Pub. Co 2013 Physics letters: B Vol.721 No.1
The production cross section of electrons from semileptonic decays of beauty hadrons was measured at mid-rapidity (|y|<0.8) in the transverse momentum range 1<pT<8 GeV/c with the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC in pp collisions at a center of mass energy s=7 TeV using an integrated luminosity of 2.2 nb-1. Electrons from beauty hadron decays were selected based on the displacement of the decay vertex from the collision vertex. A perturbative QCD calculation agrees with the measurement within uncertainties. The data were extrapolated to the full phase space to determine the total cross section for the production of beauty quark-antiquark pairs.

Angular correlations between charged trigger and associated particles are measured by the ALICE detector in p-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV for transverse momentum ranges within 0.5<pT,assoc<pT,trig<4 GeV/c. The correlations are measured over two units of pseudorapidity and full azimuthal angle in different intervals of event multiplicity, and expressed as associated yield per trigger particle. Two long-range ridge-like structures, one on the near side and one on the away side, are observed when the per-trigger yield obtained in low-multiplicity events is subtracted from the one in high-multiplicity events. The excess on the near-side is qualitatively similar to that recently reported by the CMS Collaboration, while the excess on the away-side is reported for the first time. The two-ridge structure projected onto azimuthal angle is quantified with the second and third Fourier coefficients as well as by near-side and away-side yields and widths. The yields on the near side and on the away side are equal within the uncertainties for all studied event multiplicity and pT bins, and the widths show no significant evolution with event multiplicity or pT. These findings suggest that the near-side ridge is accompanied by an essentially identical away-side ridge.
J/ψ production as a function of charged particle multiplicity in pp collisions at s =7 TeV
ALICE Collaboration,Abelev, B.,Adam, J.,Adamova, D.,Adare, A.M.,Aggarwal, M.M.,Aglieri Rinella, G.,Agocs, A.G.,Agostinelli, A.,Aguilar Salazar, S.,Ahammed, Z.,Ahmad Masoodi, A.,Ahmad, N.,Ahn, S.U.,Aki North-Holland Pub. Co 2012 Physics letters: B Vol.712 No.3
The ALICE Collaboration reports the measurement of the relative J/ψ yield as a function of charged particle pseudorapidity density dNch/dη in pp collisions at s=7 TeV at the LHC. J/ψ particles are detected for pt>0, in the rapidity interval |y|<0.9 via decay into e+e-, and in the interval 2.5<y<4.0 via decay into μ+μ- pairs. An approximately linear increase of the J/ψ yields normalized to their event average (dNJ/ψ/dy)/<dNJ/ψ/dy> with (dNch/dη)/<dNch/dη> is observed in both rapidity ranges, where dNch/dη is measured within |η|<1 and pt>0. In the highest multiplicity interval with <dNch/dη(bin)≥24.1, corresponding to four times the minimum bias multiplicity density, an enhancement relative to the minimum bias J/ψ yield by a factor of about 5 at 2.5<y<4 (8 at |y|<0.9) is observed.

ALICE Collaboration,Abelev, B.,Abrahantes Quintana, A.,Adamova, D.,Adare, A.M.,Aggarwal, M.M.,Aglieri Rinella, G.,Agocs, A.G.,Agostinelli, A.,Aguilar Salazar, S.,Ahammed, Z.,Ahmad, N.,Ahmad Masoodi, A North-Holland Pub. Co 2012 Physics letters. Section B Vol.717 No.1
The first measurements of the invariant differential cross sections of inclusive π0 and η meson production at mid-rapidity in proton-proton collisions at s=0.9 TeV and s=7 TeV are reported. The π0 measurement covers the ranges 0.4<pT<7 GeV/c and 0.3<pT<25 GeV/c for these two energies, respectively. The production of η mesons was measured at s=7 TeV in the range 0.4<pT<15 GeV/c. Next-to-Leading Order perturbative QCD calculations, which are consistent with the π0 spectrum at s=0.9 TeV, overestimate those of π0 and η mesons at s=7 TeV, but agree with the measured η/π0 ratio at s=7 TeV.

ALICE Collaboration,Aamodt, K.,Abrahantes Quintana, A.,Adamova, D.,Adare, A.M.,Aggarwal, M.M.,Aglieri Rinella, G.,Agocs, A.G.,Aguilar Salazar, S.,Ahammed, Z.,Ahmad, N.,Ahmad Masoodi, A.,Ahn, S.U.,Akin North-Holland Pub. Co 2011 Physics letters: B Vol.696 No.4
The first measurement of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in central Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider is presented. We observe a growing trend with energy now not only for the longitudinal and the outward but also for the sideward pion source radius. The pion homogeneity volume and the decoupling time are significantly larger than those measured at RHIC.

<P>The inclusive transverse momentum (p(T)) distributions of primary charged particles are measured in the pseudo-rapidity range vertical bar eta vertical bar <0.8 as a function of event centrality in Pb-Pb collisions at root S-NN = 2.76 TeV with ALICE at the LHC. The data are presented in the p(T) range 0.15 < p(T) <50 GeV/c for nine centrality intervals from 70-80% to 0-5%. The results in Pb-Pb are presented in terms of the nuclear modification factor R-AA using a pp reference spectrum measured at the same collision energy. We observe that the suppression of high-p(T) particles strongly depends on event centrality. The yield is most suppressed in central collisions (0-5%) with R-AA approximate to 0.13 at p(T) = 6-7 GeV/c. Above p(T) = 7 GeV/c, there is a significant rise in the nuclear modification factor, which reaches R-AA approximate to 0.4 for p(T) > 30 GeV/c. In peripheral collisions (70-80%), only moderate suppression (R-AA approximate to 0.6-0.7) and a weak p(T) dependence is observed. The measured nuclear modification factors are compared to other measurements and model calculations. (C) 2013 CERN. Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.</P>
