        Structures and biological activities of azaphilones produced by Penicillium sp. KCB11A109 from a ginseng field

        Twelve metabolites, including five highly oxygenated azaphilones, geumsanols A-E, along with seven known analogues were isolated from Penicillium sp. KCB11A109, a fungus derived from a ginseng field. Their structures were assigned by spectroscopic means (NMR and MS), and stereochemistries were determined by extensive spectroscopic analyses (<SUP>1</SUP>H-<SUP>1</SUP>H coupling constants, NOESY, and HETLOC) and chemical derivatizations (modified Mosher's method and acetonide formation). The isolates were evaluated for their anticancer, antimicrobial, antimalarial activities, and phenotypic effects in zebrafish development. Of these compounds possessing no pyranoquinone core, only geumsanol E exhibited cytotoxic activities and toxic effects on zebrafish embryos, suggesting that a double bond at C-11 and C-12 is important for biological activity.

        Nucleus accumbens septi (NAB), one of mesolimbic system, which anatomically related the limbic system. We an attempted to elucidated emotional changes following bilateral NAB lesions in rats. Caudal, rostral and both areas of NAB were lesioned each in separated animal groups. Furthermore, aggressive behavior induced by NAB rats was investigated in comparison with those induced by olfactory bulbectomized rats and raphe nucleus-lesioned rats. 1) At postoperative day 2, locomotor activity were increased in r-NAB rats but not in c-NAB rats. 2) All rats exhibited hyperirritability and muricide including mouse-eating behavior after NAB lesions. 3) Muricide of NAB rats was significantly supressed by L-DOPA, L-5-HTP and antidepressants, muricide of raphe rats was also significantly inhibited by L-DOPA and L-5-HTP, while that in OB rats was not suppressed. These results suggested that the NAB plays an important role in locomotor activity and aggression. The characteristics of aggressive behavior induced by NAB rats resemble to that of raphe-rats.

        ENHANCEMENT OF NOx-PM TRADE-OFF IN A DIESEL ENGINE ADOPTING BIO-ETHANOL AND EGR

        −For realizing a premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) engine, the effects of bio-ethanol blend oil and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) on PM-NOx trade-off have been investigated in a single cylinder direct injection diesel engine with the compression ratio of 17.8. In the present experiment, the ethanol blend ratio and the EGR ratio were varied focusing on ignition delay, premixed combustion, diffusive combustion, smoke, NOx and the thermal efficiency. Very low levels of 1.5 [g/kWh] NOx and 0.02 [g/kWh] PM, which is close to the 2009 emission standards imposed on heavy duty diesel engines in Japan, were achieved without deterioration of the thermal efficiency in the PCCI engine operated with the 50% ethanol blend fuel and the EGR ratio of 0.2. It is found that this improvement can be achieved by formation of the premixed charge condition resulting from a longer ignition delay. A marked increase in ignition delay is due to blending ethanol with low cetane number and large latent heat, and due to lowering in-cylinder gas temperature on compression stroke based on the EGR. It is noticed that smoke can be reduced even by increasing the EGR ratio under a highly premixed condition.

        INFLUENCE OF OPERATION PATTERNS OF LIGHT-DUTY FREIGHT VEHICLES ON NOx POLLUTION AT LOCAL ROADSIDES

        Running tests on roads were conducted to clarify the influences of road infrastructure, traffic condition and vehicle’s emission level to the amount of emission at local roadsides, and to reveal the operation patterns which can reduce the emission peaks. NOx emission peaks of two light duty freight diesel vehicles which have different emission levels were evaluated by using an on-board measurement system. Tests were carried out with various payload conditions and road conditions. As a result many NOx emission peaks were observed when the vehicles were starting or accelerating at intersections. The test vehicle which has higher emission level caused higher frequency and level of NOx emission peaks. Shifting up at lower engine speed in combination with lower acceleration brought out not only reduction of NOx emission peaks level but also of CO₂ mass emission.

      • Development of a Timberjack-like Pruning Robot

        A hybrid novel climbing pruning robot responding the requirement of sustainable forest management is presented. The climbing principal is imitated climbing approach of timberjacks in Japan. Main features include the locating of center of mass of the pruning robot outside of tree and the innovative climbing strategy fusing the straight and spiral climbs. Four active wheels are set at regular intervals around the tree allowing the robot to move along the tree. This novel design provides both lightweight and high climbing speed features of the pruning robot. The development progress of the robot with the experimental results of hybrid climb is reported here. Furthermore, the fuzzy velocity controller is also introduced with a promising experimental result.

      • Pharmacological Studies on Aggressive Behavior Induced by Three Different Regional Brain Lesions

        본 연구는 측좌각, 봉선핵 및 후구 등 서로 다른 뇌 부위의 손상으로 야기된 공격성에 대한 약물의 효과를 비교 검토하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1. 측좌각, 봉선핵 및 후구 손상으로 야기된 muricide는 atropine으로 억제되었으나 hyperirritability는 억제되지 않았다. 2. 측좌각, 봉선핵 손상으로 인한 muricide는 L-DOPA, L-5-HTP에 의하여 현저히 억제되었으나 후구 손상으로 인한 muricide는 거의 억제되지 않았다. 3. 측좌각, 봉선핵 및 후구 손상으로 인한 muricide는 항우울제에 의하여 현저히 억제되었다. 특히 측좌각 및 봉선핵 손상으로 인한 muricide 억제에는 nomifensine과 clomipramine이 효과적이었으며 후구 손상으로 인한 muricide 억제에는 imipramine이 가장 효과적이었다. 그러나 hyperirritability는 항우울제에 의하여 거의 억제되지 않았다. 이상의 결과에서 측좌각 손상으로 인한 공격성의 약물학적 특징은 후구보다는 봉선핵 손상으로 인한 공격성과 유사하였으며 muricide 억제에 대한 항우울제의 효과가 서로 다른 것을 이용하여 항우울제의 작용평가에 도움이 될 것으로 사료된다. The effects of various drugs on muricide and hyperirritability induced by bilateral lesions of the nucleus accumbens septi (NAB) were investigated in comparison with those on aggression induced by midbrain raphe nuclei-lesioned rats (raphe) and olfactory bulbectomized rats (OB). Muricide in NAB, raphe and OB rats were markedly suppressed by atropine. Muricide in NAB and raphe rats were significantly suppressed by L-DOPA, L-5-HTP, but muricide in OB rats was scarcely suppressed by L-DOPA and L-5-HTP. Hyperirritability in NAB, raphe and OB rats were significantly reduced by L-DOPA and haloperidol but not suppressed by atropine. On the other hand, muricide in NAB rats was markedly suppressed by antidepressants, particularily, nomifensine, clomipramine and desipramine. Muricide in raphe rats was markedly inhibited by nomifensine and clomipramine but only slightly inhibited by desipramine. Muricide in OB rats was markedly suppressed by imipramine. Hyperirritability in NAB, raphe and OB rats were slightly suppressed by antidepressants. These results suggested that the pharmacological characteristics of aggression induced by NAB rats resembles that induced by raphe rats, but differs from that induced by OB rats. It is also suggested that employment of different types of experimentally induced muricide in rats can be useful for the evaluation of antidepressants.
