Cyprodinil (CYP) is a pyrimidine amine fungicide that has been extensively used in agricultural areas. 3,3′-Diindolylmethane (DIM) is a derivative of the dietary phytoestrogen, indole-3-carbinol (I3C), which is derived from cruciferous vegetables and considered to be a cancer-preventive phytonutrient agent. In this study, the effects of CYP and DIM were examined on the cell viability, invasion, and metastasis of human endometrial cancer cells, Ishikawa, via epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT). CYP increased the level of cell viability of Ishikawa cells compared to DMSO as a control, as did E2. Ishikawa cells lost cell-to-cell contact and obtained a spindle-shaped or fibroblast-like morphology in response to the application of E2 or CYP by the cell morphology assay. In the cell migration and invasion assay, CYP enhanced the ability of migration and invasion of Ishikawa cells, as did E2. E2 and CYP increased the expressions of N-cadherin and Snail proteins, while decreasing the expression of E-cadherin protein as EMT-related markers. In addition, E2 and CYP increased the protein expressions of cathepsin D and MMP-9, metastasis-related markers. Conversely, CYP-induced EMT, cell migration, and invasion were reversed by fulvestrant (ICI 182,780) as an estrogen receptor (ER) antagonist, indicating that CYP exerts estrogenic activity by mediating these processes via an ER-dependent pathway. Similar to ICI 182,780, DIM significantly suppressed E2 and CYP-induced proliferation, EMT, migration, and invasion of Ishikawa cancer cells. Overall, the present study revealed that DIM has an antiestrogenic chemopreventive effect to withdraw the cancer-enhancing effect of E2 and CYP, while CYP has the capacity to enhance the metastatic potential of estrogen-responsive endometrial cancer.

The cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is the world-wide agriculture pest and has the ability to become resistant to many pesticides. Hence, we conducted behavioral tests on apterous and alate aphids for series compounds from natural products by using a two-choice test, a no-choice test, a host choice test and electroantennography (EAG). As a result, we found 3 out of 30 compounds for apterous aphids and 2 out of 15 compounds for alate aphids, both of which showed powerful repellent effects on these aphids. In this study, we suggest that our findings could be useful and eco-friendly spatial repellents for controlling cotton aphid.

According to WHO global estimates from 2008, more than 1.4 billion adults were overweight and among them, over 200 million men and 300 million women were obese. Although the main treatment modalities for overweight and obese individuals remain dieting and physical exercise, the synthetic anti-obesity medications have been increasingly used due to their perceived convenience. Generally, anti-obesity medications are classified as appetite suppressants or fat absorption blockers. In the present study, we examined the adverse side-effects in respect of behavior changes of phentermine and Ephedra sinica (mahuang) that are anti-obesity drugs currently distributed to domestic consumers. Phentermine is mainly classified as an anorexing agent and mahuang a thermogenic agent. Because phentermine and mahuang are considered to display effectiveness through the regulation of nerve system, their potential influences of on behavioral changes were examined employing animal experiments. From the results of experiments testing locomotor activity through the use of treadmill, rota-rod, and open field system, phentermine and mahuang were commonly revealed to induce behavioral changes of rats by reducing a motor ability, an ability to cope with an external stimulus, and a sense of balance or by augmenting wariness or excitement. These adverse effects of phenternime and mahuang in behavioral changes need to be identified in humans and anti-obesity medications such as phentermine and mahuang should be prescribed for only obesity where it is anticipated that the benefits of the treatment outweigh their potential risks.

This study investigated the effects of casino motives on gambling toxic effects focusing on casino users in this process, it is to verify the mediating effect of game immersion and the control effect of self-control. The survey for data collection was conducted from February 10 to March 10, 2020, SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 18.0 were used for hypothesis verification by using 311 valid samples for users of Kangwon Land of Korean casino companies. As a result of the hypothesis 1, it was found that learning motivation, challenge motivation, and monetary motivation had a positive effect on the gambling addictive scent, and deviating motivation did not significantly affect the gambling addictive scent. As a result of Hypothesis 2, learning motivation, challenge motivation, deviant motivation, and monetary motivation all showed significant influence on game immersion. As a result of Hypothesis 3, the direct influence of gambling addiction by casino users on game addiction was positive (+). As a result of Hypothesis 4, game immersion in the path of learning motivation, challenge motivation, and money motivation for gambling addiction tended to have a partial mediating effect, and it was found to have a complete mediating effect between deviating motive and addictive gambling addict. Therefore, casino companies should conduct ethical management, economic responsibility, gambling addiction, and continuous social contribution activities to reduce crime, so that they can renew the negative image of casino companies and ensure that regions and companies coexist.

The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, is one of the most important agricultural pests. Therefore, we screened fifteen compounds from natural products for their spatial repellent and oviposition deterrent activities against T. urticae in the laboratory by using two-choice and no-choice tests. In the bridge two-choice test, nine compounds showed the spatial repellent effects on T. urticae at 20 mg dose, resulting in reduced numbers of eggs. Among the nine compounds, at 2 mg dose, two compounds were selected as having more spatial repellent activity than the others. The two compounds also showed spatial repellent and oviposition deterrent effects in the two-choice test from hosts. In the no-choice test from a host, the spatial repellent effects of the two compounds to T. urticae were significantly stronger than that of controls. These results suggest that the findings can be used as potential agents for the prevention and population control of T. urticae in the field.

The aim of the present study is to investigate the preventive effect of water extract of Mori Ramulus (MRWE) on oxidative stress-mediated cellular damages in rat skeletal L6 myoblasts. Our results demonstrated that MRWE pretreatment markedly improved cell survival and suppressed cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase and apoptosis in hydrogen peroxide ( H2O2)-treated L6 cells. H2O2- triggered DNA damage was also notably reduced by MRWE, which since it was correlated with protection of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Additionally, H2O2 stimulated cytosolic release of cytochrome c and upregulation of Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, whereas MRWE suppressed these changes following by H2O2. Moreover, MRWE inhibited the cleavage of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase as well as the activity of caspase-3 by H2O2. Furthermore, MRWE enhanced H2O2- mediated expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-associated factor 2 (Nrf2) and its representative downstream enzyme, heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1). However, the protective effects of MRWE on H2O2- induced ROS production, cell cycle arrest and apoptosis were significantly attenuated by HO-1 inhibitor. In conclusion, our present results suggests that MRWE could protect L6 myoblasts from H2O2- induced cellular injury by inhibiting ROS generation along with Nrf2-mediated activation of HO-1, indicating this finding may expand the scope of application of Mori Ramulus in medicine.
