Abstract

The use of anaerobic membrane bioreactor technology (AnMBR) is rapidly expanding. However, depending on the application, AnMBR design and operation is not fully mature, and needs further research to optimize process efficiency and enhance applicability. This paper reviews state-of-the-art of AnMBR focusing on modelling and control aspects. Quantitative environmental and economic evaluation has demonstrated substantial advantages in application of AnMBR to domestic wastewater treatment, but detailed modelling is less mature. While anaerobic process modelling is generally mature, more work is needed on integrated models which include coupling between membrane performance (including fouling) and the biological process. This should include microbial factors, which are important to generation of specific foulants such as soluble and particulate inert organics. Mature and well-established control tools, including better feedback control strategies are also required for both the process, and for fouling control.

Highlights

AnMBR needs further research to optimize process efficiency.

Modelling can provide insight into the factors playing a key role in AnMBR.

Process models still face a long path to adaptation in practice.

Better understanding of fouling mechanisms in AnMBRs is required.

Control strategies can be further optimized from mechanistic knowledge of fouling.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of Blastocystis sp. in gastrointestinal symptoms reported by adult patients in a Peruvian hospital. A case-control 3:1 study was performed at the outpatient clinic. Direct stool examinations were done. One hundred sixty patients were included, 40 cases and 120 controls. Positivity to Blastocystis sp. was associated with dyspepsia (P <0.001), bloating (P <0.001) and abdominal pain (P = 0.03) in patients attending our hospital outpatient clinic.

The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of the presence of a surface breaking crack in the electrical potential field in concrete specimens. A numerical simulation using COMSOL Multiphysics v5.5 is used in analyzing the change in the electrical potential difference (ΔV) in concrete with varying crack width, length and depth. It is concluded that the increase in the dimension of the crack also increases the value of the relative electrical potential difference (ratio of ΔV in cracked concrete over ΔV in solid concrete). This result is only applicable on cracks having air voids. For cracks filled with water, its effect on the ER measurement can be considered negligible.
Applying Asymmetric Key Encryption to Secure Internet based SCADA
Robles, Rosslin John,Kim, Tai-hoon The Institute of Internet 2012 International Journal of Internet, Broadcasting an Vol.4 No.2
As an acronym for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, SCADA is a concept that is used to refer to the management and procurement of data that can be used in developing process management criteria. The use of the term SCADA varies, depending on location. Conventionally, SCADA is connected only in a limited private network. In current times, there are also demands of connecting SCADA through the internet. The internet SCADA facility has brought a lot of advantages in terms of control, data generation and viewing. With these advantages, come the security issues regarding web SCADA. In this paper, we discuss web SCADA and its connectivity along with the issues regarding security and suggests a web SCADA security solution using asymmetric-key encryption.

This paper presents two MPC (Model Predictive Control) based charging and discharging algorithms of BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) for capacity firming of wind generation. To deal with the intermittency of the output of wind generation, a single BESS is employed. The proposed algorithms not only make the output of combined systems of wind generation and BESS track the predefined reference, but also keep the SoC (State of Charge) of BESS within its physical limitation. Since the proposed algorithms are both presented in simple if-then statements which are the optimal solutions of related optimization problems, they are both easy to implement in a real-time system. Finally, simulations of the two strategies are done using a realistic wind farm library and a BESS model. The results on both simulations show that the proposed algorithms effectively achieve capacity firming while fulfilling all physical constraints.

Over the past ten years there has been a marked increase in cases of severe fever and thrombocytopenia syndrome in East Asia. This tick-borne hemorrhagic fever presents along with clinical signs including high fever and leukopenia. In addition to humans, the virus has also been detected with shared genetic homology in farm animals including goats, cattle, horses, and pigs. Furthermore, several genotypes of severe fever and thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) are currently co-circulating between humans and animals. In China, where the virus was first detected in rural areas in 2009, the SFTSV mortality rate has been reported to be as 6% and higher than 30%, especially in immuno-compromised patients. Moreover, this virus has been isolated in neighbor countries including Japan and South Korea where the fatality rates in 2015 were more than 30% in both countries. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the virology, genotypes, pathogenesis, and epidemiology of SFTSV infection in humans and animals. Currently, a collaborative global approach against SFTSV infection is being undertaken; however, the need for continuous disease surveillance and production of an effective vaccine is imperative as this virus may lead to an epidemic of irreversible status in both humans and animals.

The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of the presence of steel reinforcements to ER measurements through COMSOL Multiphysics with respect to rebar diameter, concrete cover, and distance from the Wenner probe device. It is concluded in this study that the presence of steel reinforcement has a significant effect to the ER values. As the rebar concrete cover and the distance of the Wenner Probe device from the rebar increases, the relative ER increases. However, increasing the rebar diameter doesn’t affect the concrete resistivity values.
