Labeling of North Korean Refugees in the Post-Cold War Era : A Quantitative Analysis of the South Korean Academic Literature

Riccardo Ferraresso,Mi-young Jeon 이화여자대학교 통일학연구원 2018 Journal of peace and unification Vol.8 No.2

In the (South) Korean language several terms have been coined to define North Korean refugees, but there seems to be a lack of consensus on the most appropriate label to define this group. This seems to apply also to scholarly communication. Although in recent years South Korean researchers have increasingly contributed to expanding our knowledge of North Korea and North Korean refugees, there is still little knowledge about the usage patterns of labels to define North Korean refugees among scholars. The main purpose of the current study is to identify such patterns in the context of scholarly communication. Specifically, this quantitative analysis will focus on the patterns of the three labels for North Korean refugees that have been more commonly used over the last two decades: “t’albukja” (Escapees from the North), “pukhan it’al chumin” (Residents who left North Korea), and “saet’ŏmin” (New Settlers).

Risk and Protective Factors Associated With Intimate Partner Violence in a Nationally Representative Sample of Korean Men

Ferraresso, Riccardo The Korean Society for Preventive Medicine 2020 예방의학회지 Vol.53 No.2

Objectives: In recent years, multiple studies have investigated the issue of intimate partner violence (IPV) in Korea. However, most of those studies have focused on IPV against women, while overlooking the problem of men IPV victimization. Considering this, the current study identified risk and protective factors for IPV and examined their influence on IPV victimization among Korean men. Methods: We used a nationally representative sample of 1668 Korean men from the 2013 Korea National Survey on Domestic Violence. The associations between potential IPV risk factors and different types of IPV were investigated using univariate and multivariate logistic regression. Specifically, separate analyses were conducted of 5 types of IPV (neglect, controlling behaviors, emotional violence, economic violence, and physical violence). Results: The prevalence of IPV among Korean men and women showed only marginal gender differences. Controlling behaviors (men, 23.3%; women, 23.9%) and emotional violence (men, 16.5%; women, 18.8%) were the most common types of IPV reported, followed by neglect (men, 11.2%; women, 11.7%). Separate logistic regression analyses for the 5 subtypes of IPV revealed that mutual IPV was a strong predictor of IPV. Men who abused their wives were more likely to experience neglect (odds ratio [OR], 29.24; p<0.01), controlling behaviors (OR, 36.61; p<0.01), emotional violence (OR, 58.07; p<0.01), economic violence (OR, 18.78; p<0.01), and physical violence (OR, 38.09; p<0.01). Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that IPV intervention strategies should particularly focus on couples whose relationship is characterized by patterns of bidirectional violence.

Trends in Military Spending of China and Four ASEAN Countries: A Time Series Analysis Approach

        Ferraresso Riccardo,신인석 한국세계지역학회 2018 世界地域硏究論叢 Vol.36 No.1

One of the most evident signs of China’s rise in the global arena has been represented by the growth of China’s military spending since the early 1990s. While the expansion and modernization of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) cannot pose an immediate threat to U.S. power projection across the globe, it is undeniable that it is perceived as a threat to the regional stability. In particular, the South China Sea represents a future possible theater of a military confrontation between China and ASEAN countries that have claims or partial claims over those waters and adjacent islands. While China remains the biggest biggest spender in the Asian region and the country’s military spending exceeds the military budget of the other main countries in the region combined, data on military expenditure show that ASEAN countries have been attempting to boost their military in the recent years. The current study attempts to investigate the arms race among those countries: Using time series analysis, the study analyzes the temporal relationship between the increase of China’s defense spending and the increase of military spending by ASEAN countries that have territorial claims in the region. The findings of our study do not support the claim that such temporal relationship exists. We argue that bilateral trade relationships between China and ASEAN countries and reliance on military support from the U.S. in the region could partially explain the insignificant relationship.

국내거주 탈북 여성의 배우자폭력 피해 신고에 미치는 영향요인에 대한 연구

        페라레소 리카르도(Ferraresso Riccardo),최지선(Choi,Jisun) 한국피해자학회 2020 被害者學硏究 Vol.28 No.1

Partner violence towards women is a serious social problem in South Korea. In particular, statistics suggest that North Korean women residing in South Korea experience higher rates of intimate partner violence compared to South Korean women. Nevertheless, the academic literature on this issue is still very scarce. The current study attempted to investigate the risk and protective factors associated with the decision of female North Korean defectors to report an intimate partner violence incident to the police. To determine the significant factors, binary logistic regression model was used to analyze data from the 2010 National Survey of Domestic Violence collected by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. Separate logistic regressions analyses were performed to determine the impact of different types of intimate partner violence (psychological violence, physical violence, sexual violence, total intimate partner violence) on the decision to contact the police. Findings reveal that the likelihood that female North Korean defectors report intimate partner violence victimization to the police increases significantly with the frequency of incidents (for all types of intimate partner violence) and if women do not have children.
