Herding Behavior: Do Domestic Investors Herd Toward Foreign Investors in Vietnam Stock Market?

Quynh NGUYEN P.(Quynh NGUYEN P. ) 한국유통과학회 2022 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.9 No.9

With a view to attracting foreign investment and growing the economy, the Vietnamese government has hastened financial reforms, including the lifting of limitations on foreign investment, which has resulted in rapidly rising foreign ownership in recent years. To study the relationship between transactions of foreign investors and transactions of domestic investors on two stock exchanges in Vietnam Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange (HSX) and Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX). This study applies a secondary dataset comprising daily market trading information of 912 stocks from 18 industries listed on 2 Vietnam stock exchanges, including HSX and HNX, which includes executed price, executed volume, daily Buy Orders, and Sell Orders categorized into domestic investors’ orders and foreign investors orders from 01.04.2010 to 10.04.2018. The regression results show a significantly positive relationship between foreign investors’ trading and domestic investors’ transaction in all trading activities in both up and down markets. Therefore, these results indicate that domestic investors in Vietnam are concerned with foreign investors’ trading as an important sign, and domestic investors tend to follow their counterparties without appropriate fundamental information. From there, there are signs of herding behavior of domestic investors following foreign investors in transactions on the stock market in Vietnam.

Personality Traits versus Public Service Motivation: Motive Distribution of Vietnamese Generation Z

        Thi Quynh Trang NGUYEN(Thi Quynh Trang NGUYEN ),Tri D. LE(Tri D. LE ) 한국유통과학회 2022 유통과학연구 Vol.20 No.9

Purpose: Public sector is usually not an attractive career choice for the youths, due to the uncompetitive income and the working environment. Therefore, understanding the motivations of the Generation Z, the currently early-career employees, to work in the public sector is important. This research aims to address a gap in the literature on the linkage between Personality Traits of Generation Z and Public Service Motivation (PSM). Research Design, Data, and Methodology: Using the sample of Vietnamese generation Z, it shows how individual personality, as defined by the Big Five, affects PSM. A quantitative survey of 355 university students, who are members of this generation and are preparing to join the labor market, was undertaken. We used SEM to examine the results. Results: Our findings show that Agreeableness, Neuroticism, and Conscientiousness are significant antecedents of PSM. Agreeableness, which leads to three PSM dimensions, namely Compassion, Self-Sacrifice, and Commitment to Public Values, is the best predictor of this motivation. Meanwhile, Neuroticism and Conscientiousness only affect the dimension of Compassion. Conclusion: This study adds to the limited current knowledge on the personality-PSM relationship among generation Z. The distribution of affective (Compassion, Self-Sacrifice) and norm-based (Commitment to Public Values) motives provide insight for both career counselors and recruiters in public service delivery.

Drug resistance and the genotypic characteristics of rpoB and katG in rifampicin- and/or isoniazid-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates in central Vietnam

Thi Binh Nguyen Nguyen,Thi Kieu Diem Nguyen,Van Hue Trương,Thi Tuyet Ngoc Tran, van Bao Thang Phan,Thi Tuyen Nguyen,Hoang Bach Nguyen,Viet Quynh Tram Ngo,Van Tuan Mai,Paola Molicotti 질병관리본부 2023 Osong Public Health and Research Persptectives Vol.14 No.5

Objectives: Tuberculosis (TB) and drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) are national health burdens in Vietnam. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of rifampicin (RIF) and/or isoniazid (isonicotinic acid hydrazide, INH) resistance in patients with suspected TB, and applied appropriate techniques to help rapidly target DR-TB. Methods: In total, 1,547 clinical specimens were collected and cultured using the BACTEC MGIT system (Becton Dickinson and Co.). A resazurin microtiter assay (REMA) was used to determine the proportions of RIF and/or INH resistance. A real-time polymerase chain reaction panel with TaqMan probes was employed to identify the mutations of rpoB and katG associated with DR-TB in clinical isolates. Genotyping of the identified mutations was also performed. Results: A total of 468 Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates were identified using the REMA. Of these isolates, 106 (22.6%) were found to be resistant to 1 or both antibiotics. Of the resistant isolates, 74 isolates (69.8%) were resistant to isoniazid (INH) only, while 1 isolate (0.94%) was resistant to RIF only. Notably, 31 isolates (29.24%) were resistant to both antibiotics. Of the 41 phenotypically INH-resistant isolates, 19 (46.3%) had the Ser315Thr mutation. There were 8 different rpoB mutations in 22 (68.8%) of the RIF-resistant isolates. The most frequently detected mutations were at codons 531 (37.5%), 526 (18.8%), and 516 (6.3%). Conclusion: To help prevent new cases of DR-TB in Vietnam, it is crucial to gain a comprehensive understanding of the genotypic DR-TB isolates.

      • Knowledge and Attitude Towards Tobacco Smoking among 13-15 Year-Old School Children in Viet Nam - Findings from GYTS 2014

Nguyen, Thanh Huong,Nguyen, Trung Kien,Kim, Bao Giang,Hoang, Van Minh,Phan, Thi Hai,Doan, Thu Huyen,Luong, Ngoc Khue,Nguyen, Thuy Linh,Nguyen, Tuan Lam,Pham, Thi Quynh Nga Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.no.sup1

Studies have shown that smoking is a learnt behavior, often initiated during adolescence. This paper aims to describe tobacco-related knowledge, attitude and associations among school adolescents aged 13-15 with exposure to anti-smoking information. Using data from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) in Viet Nam, 2014, knowledge was measured through 4 questions about tobacco use, and attitude was assessed through 3 questions on personal, social and environmental aspects. Students giving most anti-tobacco responses to all questions were considered as having correct knowledge or appropriate attitude or both. Access to anti-smoking information was determined by exposure to any media messages on tobacco control during the past 30 days and teaching in school about the danger of tobacco use during the past 12 months. A substantial percentage of students thought that being near others who smoke might be harmful to them and smoking is harmful to health (89.4% and 89.6% respectively). However, only 46.4% reported that it is definitely difficult to quit smoking and 66.9% thought that smoking for only 1 or 2 years, once stopped, is harmful to health. Slightly more than half of the respondents reported appropriate attitude that young smokers have fewer friends than others and smoking makes them less attractive and less comfortable at social events. Noticing anti-smoking messages in the media together with having lessons in school about the dangers of tobacco substantially increased the likelihood of having correct knowledge, appropriate attitude and both. Despite relatively high awareness about smoking harms, effective educational communication is still highly needed to improve the level of comprehensive knowledge and an appropriate attitude regarding tobacco use.

A Study on the Poverty of Mountain People Depending on Forests

NGUYEN, Phuong Thi Minh,NGUYEN, Song Van,DO, Duc Tai,NGUYEN, Quynh Thi Thuy,DINH, Thanh Trung,NGUYEN, Hang Phan Thu Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.7

Livelihood capitals have a clear influence on livelihood development. As for the livelihood results, it has been pointed out in the analysis of the poor households that the ability of people to escape poverty depends especially on the access to livelihood capitals. This study aims to analyze the impacts of livelihood capital on poverty among mountain people who depend on forests through human capital, social capital, natural capital, physical capital and financial capital. This research employs the model of binary regression function. Independent variables x1, x2, …, xn are targets of livelihood strategy, vulnerability context, and livelihood capitals. These variables were selected to be included in the original model with dependent variable Y as poor and non-poor households. This study surveys households living in upland areas, near forests, and households of ethnic minorities. The results show that, out of the poor household rate, nearly 4% are newly-poor households or those falling back into poverty. Therefore, the government needs to pay more attention to this disadvantaged group and implements policies such as education and training policies, credit support policies, policies to support forest development, and payment for forest environmental services in the context of emerging countries like Vietnam.

Factors Affecting Online Reservation Decisions through Hotel Websites: An Empirical Study from Can Tho City, Vietnam

Hai Quynh Tram NGUYEN,Yen Nhi LE,Ly Giau LAM,Thi Yen Nhi LE,Trieu Di NGUYEN,Thi Kim Yen PHAM,Trong Luan NGUYEN 한국유통과학회 2022 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.9 No.5

Many consumers are opting for online booking over traditional booking systems. Customers can actively seek out information about hotels and lodging services, as well as book rooms, at any time and from any location. Customers also feel more supported when they interact with virtual assistants or professionals. Recognizing this issue, several hotels have focused on improving their websites by incorporating aspects that encourage customers to book directly through the hotel’s website. The study’s goal is to discover what factors impact people’s decisions to book a hotel stay through the hotel’s website. Therefore, hotel managers and owners can make decisions to improve the hotel website to attract residents to Can Tho City. The factors are website quality, affective commitment, social presence, and e-trust that affect customers’ decision to book through the hotel website. The study uses quantitative methods to collect data from 180 residents living in Can Tho. Through data analysis on SPSS and Amos software, the research results show that three factors considered, namely website quality, affective commitment, and social presence, positively influence customers’ booking decisions. This finding also suggests that e-trust is less critical to residents in Can Tho City, different from what the study had predicted.

Purchase Intention Towards Japanese Convenience Goods: A Cross-Sectional Study in Vietnam

Nga Thi Quynh NGUYEN,Duong Tuan NGUYEN,Quynh Thi Phuc NGUYEN 한국유통과학회 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.10

The primary purpose of this study is to identify determinants influencing Vietnamese consumers’ purchase intention towards Japanese convenience goods. The research model consisting of six factors affecting the dependent variable is proposed based on the Theory of Consumption Values and Theory of Perceived Value of purchase. This study employs a survey method in a convenient sampling method to collect data of target respondents. Data consisting of 180 samples was collected and analyzed using the SMARPLS3 software. The measurement model is assessed to confirm the validity and reliability of the construct, then hypotheses testing is performed with Bootstrapping analysis. The results demonstrated that five factors affect Vietnamese consumers’ purchase intention towards Japanese convenience goods, including the price of the product, quality of the product, functional value, emotional value, and conditional value. Major findings of this study suggest that the functional value that consumer perceives about Japanese convenience goods has the most significant relationship with their purchase intention, followed by the quality of the product and the price of the product. Besides, emotional value and conditional value have a moderate influence on consumers’ purchase intention. Whereas the influence of the epistemic value of the product on consumers’ purchase intention is insignificant in this presented study.

Spatial Interpolation and Assimilation Methods for Satellite and Ground Meteorological Data in Vietnam

Do, Khac Phong,Nguyen, Ba Tung,Nguyen, Xuan Thanh,Bui, Quang Hung,Tran, Nguyen Le,Nguyen, Thi Nhat Thanh,Vuong, Van Quynh,Nguyen, Huy Lai,Le, Thanh Ha Korea Information Processing Society 2015 Journal of information processing systems Vol.11 No.4

This paper presents the applications of spatial interpolation and assimilation methods for satellite and ground meteorological data, including temperature, relative humidity, and precipitation in regions of Vietnam. In this work, Universal Kriging is used for spatially interpolating ground data and its interpolated results are assimilated with corresponding satellite data to anticipate better gridded data. The input meteorological data was collected from 98 ground weather stations located all over Vietnam; whereas, the satellite data consists of the MODIS Atmospheric Profiles product (MOD07), the ASTER Global Digital Elevation Map (ASTER DEM), and the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) in six years. The outputs are gridded fields of temperature, relative humidity, and precipitation. The empirical results were evaluated by using the Root mean square error (RMSE) and the mean percent error (MPE), which illustrate that Universal Kriging interpolation obtains higher accuracy than other forms of Kriging; whereas, the assimilation for precipitation gradually reduces RMSE and significantly MPE. It also reveals that the accuracy of temperature and humidity when employing assimilation that is not significantly improved because of low MODIS retrieval due to cloud contamination.
