Recent studies advocate that there is a positive relationship between levels of employee involvement (EI) and the productivity and long-term financial performance of organisations. The adoption of EI practices has been recognised as a means to drive organisations towards performance improvement. This paper discusses the constituent elements of EI and the integration of EI and total quality management (TQM) practices with respect to improving the organisational performance in manufacturing enterprises. Incorporated the key findings of an empirical study with a sample of 166 organisations in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region of the People's Republic of China (PRC), the paper addresses two problem statements: Do the information sharing, knowledge training, pay/reward systems and power/authority sharing affect the adoption of EI practices? Does the integration of EI/TQM practices contribute to better organisational performance as perceived by manufacturing enterprises? The need to interweave both EI and TQM efforts into organisational performance improvement is also discussed.
Identification of Performance Indicators for Poultry Agribusiness Operations
Pun, Kit Fai,Hosein, Anesa The Korean Society for Quality Management 2007 The Asian Journal on Quality Vol.8 No.3
Nowadays, the competitiveness of any organisations rests dominantly on how they can manage their performance, A host of performance variables such as quality, reliability, and efficiency are recognised as competitive priorities. This paper reviews the criteria and dimensions of performance measures, and discusses six core performance indicators in agribusiness operations with particular reference to the poultry/broiler farms. Besides, a holistic "Quality, Reliability and Efficiency" view of performance is proposed when developing measures for poultry agribusiness operations.
Development of a Quality Manual for a Research and Educational Centre: A Case Study
Pun Kit Fai,Ellis Ruel L.A.,Chan, Laverne The Korean Society for Quality Management 2005 The Asian Journal on Quality Vol.6 No.2
There have been growing concerns about whether proper measures are in place to ensure the delivery of quality services and the operations in research and educational institutions. This paper describes various quality models and discusses their relevance into the total quality concepts and quality management systems (QMS) in education. It then illustrates how a QMS and the accompanied quality manual be developed in a research and educational institution using the Centre for Enterprise Research Integration (ERI) at The University of the West Indies, Trinidad as a case. Through personal interviews with the Centre's personnel, views on the operations and determinants of the QMS were acquired. Results showed that the people's resistance to changes, conflicts on academic freedom, and difficulties on measuring performance were the obstacles to QMS implementation. People involvement and proper communication are determinants of QMS implementation. The system also rests on having a tailored quality manual that entails the documentation of processes and procedures for ascertaining the delivery of quality services and operations in the Centre. The development of quality manual is briefly described in the paper.

Factors Affecting HACCP Practices in the Food Sectors: A Review of Literature $1994{\sim}2007$
Pun, Kit Fai,Bhairo-Beekhoo, Patricia The Korean Society for Quality Management 2008 The Asian Journal on Quality Vol.9 No.1
Almost every country around the world has been focusing on food safety in intense and multifaceted ways. The use of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) is widely accepted as a food safety management system. This paper investigates the success factors of HACCP practices with reference to the domains of food production, processing and delivery. A literature review of food safety and management articles was conducted. Using the keywords search, the online Emerald Database was used and a total of 102 journal articles were identified between 1994 and 2007. The study examined a list of 20 success factors. Results show that 'food regulations,' 'role of the industry,' 'government policies and interventions,' 'training on food safety and hygiene,' and 'food contamination and/or poisoning' share the spotlight as being the most critical factors for HACCP practices in organisations. Future research could investigate a holistic paradigm that incorporates the success factors and aligns HACCP measures for attaining safety performance goals.
A Proposed Self-assessment Framework for Measuring and Benchmarking Organizational Performance
PUN, Kit Fai,HO, Karis Ka Yan,SUN, Hongyi 한국품질경영학회 2002 The Asian Journal on Quality Vol.3 No.2
Recent interests in total quality management (TQM) and business excellence (BE) had been fuelled with a range of national and regional awards. These awards are being increasingly used by organisations as part of the business improvement process and strategic benchmarking. This paper reviews the concepts and approaches of performance measurement (PM) and discusses the integration of PM with the TQM and BE philosophies. A TQM-BE-PM framework with a set of self-assessment checklists was developed. In order to complement the literature base with empirical evidence, an industry survey was conducted and a trial implementation of the framework was carried out in a leading manufacturing firm in Hong Kong. The self-assessment performance data of the firm was evaluated and then benchmarked with the industry averages obtained from the survey. This paper presents the empirical findings and discusses the applicability of the framework in measuring and benchmarking organisational performance toward continual improvement.
