Effect of UV-B irradiated vitamin D enriched yeast supplementation on milk performance and blood chemical profiles in dairy cows

        Patipan Hnokaew,Tossapol Moonmanee,Chirawath Phatsara,Nattaphon Chongkasikit,Prayad Trirawong,Lukman Abiola Oluodo,Saowaluck Yammuen-Art Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2023 Animal Bioscience Vol.36 No.10

Objective: The objective was to evaluate the effects of UV-B irradiated vitamin D-enriched yeast supplementation on milk yield, milk composition, vitamin D in milk, milk fatty acids, blood chemistry, and 25(OH)D status in dairy cows. Methods: Six Thai Friesian cows (milk production, 11.2±2.0 kg/d; body weight, 415.0±20.0 kg; and days in milk, 90.0±6.0) were allocated to each treatment in a 3×3 Latin square design, with three treatments and three periods. Each period of the Latin square lasted 49 days consisting of 14 days for diet adaptation and 35 days for sample collection. Dairy cows were randomly assigned to one of three treatments: i) feeding a basal diet without yeast (CON); ii) basal diet + 5 g of live yeast (75 IU/head/d of vitamin D2; LY); and iii) basal diet + 5 g of UV-B irradiated vitamin D enriched yeast (150,000 IU/head/d of vitamin D2; VDY). Feed intake and milk production were recorded daily, milk sample collection occurred on days 14 and 35 of each collection period, and blood plasma was collected on days 0, 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 of each collection period. Results: The results show that after a trial period of 14 and 35 days, the VDY group had significantly higher vitamin D content in milk than the LY and CON groups (376.41 vs 305.15, 302.14 ng/L and 413.46 vs 306.76, 301.12 ng/L, respectively). At days 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 of the experiment, cows fed the VDY group had significantly higher 25(OH)D2 status in blood than the CON and LY groups (51.07 vs 47.16, 48.05 ng/mL; 54.96 vs 45.43, 46.91 ng/mL; 56.16 vs 46.87, 47.16 ng/mL; 60.67 vs 44.39, 46.17 ng/mL and 63.91 vs 45.88, 46.88 ng/mL), respectively. Conclusion: In conclusion, UV-B irradiated vitamin D-enriched yeast supplementation could improve vitamin D content in the milk and 25(OH)D status in dairy cows during the lactation period.

Effect of Single-Dose Preemptive Systemic Dexamethasone on Postoperative Dysphagia and Odynophagia Following Anterior Cervical Spine Surgery: A Double-Blinded, Prospective, Randomized Controlled Trial

        Koopong Siribumrungwong,Patipan Kanjanapirom,Naphakkhanith Dhanachanvisith,Marin Pattanapattana 대한정형외과학회 2022 Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery Vol.14 No.2

Background: The efficacy of preoperative dexamethasone in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) to reduce dysphagia and odynophagia remains controversial. This study evaluated the effect of a single dose of intravenous dexamethasone given as preemptive analgesia in the ACDF procedure. Methods: A total of 64 patients aged 18 years or over were randomized into two groups. The experimental group received dexamethasone 10 mg intravenously before surgery for 60 minutes, and the control group received normal saline. One surgeon operated on all patients. The Bazaz score and visual analog scale (VAS) for odynophagia were measured at 0 hour, 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours, and 2 weeks postoperatively. Prevertebral soft-tissue swelling (PSTS) and the modified Japanese orthopedic association (mJOA) score were measured preoperatively and 2 weeks postoperatively. Results: The Bazaz scores at 0, 24, 48, and 72 hours after operation were significantly lower in the dexamethasone group than in the placebo group (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, and p = 0.004, respectively). The VAS scores of the dexamethasone group were significantly lower than those of the placebo group at 0, 24, 48, and 72 hours after surgery (all p < 0.001), but there was no significant reduction in the Bazaz score and VAS score at 2 weeks postoperatively. There was no difference in PSTS and mJOA preoperatively and 2 weeks postoperatively. Conclusions: A single dose of intravenous dexamethasone used preoperatively in single-level and multilevel ACDF can significantly improve symptoms of dysphagia and odynophagia early on postoperatively.

Effects of Fermented Total Mixed Ration and Cracked Cottonseed on Milk Yield and Milk Composition in Dairy Cows

        Wongnen, C.,Wachirapakorn, C.,Patipan, C.,Panpong, D.,Kongweha, K.,Namsaen, N.,Gunun, P.,Yuangklang, C. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2009 Animal Bioscience Vol.22 No.12

Four lactating Holstein Friesian crossbred cows, with an average initial weight of 450 kg, 48${\pm}$12 days in milk and initial milk yield of 18 kg/h/d, were randomly arranged according to a 2${\times}$2 factorial arrangement in a 4${\times}$4 in Latin square design with 21-d period to investigate the effects of type of total mixed ration (TMR) and type of whole cottonseed (WCS) on intake, digestibility and milk production. The dietary treatments were i) TMR and WCS supplementation at 0.5 kg/h/d, ii) TMR and cracked WCS (cWCS) supplementation at 0.5 kg/h/d, iii) fermented TMR (FTMR) and WCS supplementation at 0.5 kg/h/d, and iv) FTMR and cWCS supplementation at 0.5 kg/h/d. Voluntary feed intake was 15.9, 15.2, 15.4 and 15.6 kg DM/d in dietary treatment 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively. Digestibility of DM, OM, CP, EE, NDF and ADF were not significantly different among dietary treatments. Ruminal pH, $NH_{3}-N$ and volatile fatty acids in the rumen were also not significantly different among type of TMR or type of WCS. Blood urea-N concentration was not significantly different among dietary treatments. Ruminal bacteria population tended to increase but ruminal protozoa population tended to decrease with supplementation of cWCS, but they were not affected by FTMR. Milk yield and 3.5% FCM were not statistically different among treatments (16.6, 16.2, 17.0, 16.3 kg/d and 18.0, 18.6, 19.9 and 19.0 kg/d, respectively). Milk composition was not significantly different among dietary treatments. However, unsaturated fatty acids in milk fat in cows fed FTMR were lower (p<0.05) than in cows fed TMR. In conclusion, fermentation is a conceivable method to improve the quality of TMR for long-time storage and the cracking method is suitable to release the fat from cottonseed for enhancing fatty acid deposition in milk. Thus, the combination of FTMR and cWCS supplementation would be an alternative strategy to improve performance of lactating cows.
