Inventory of Plant Species, Phytosociology, Species Diversity and Pedological characteristics of Rambhi Beat, Senchal East Zone Forest Range, Darjeeling, West Bengal, India

Palit, Debnath,Banerjee, Arnab Institute of Forest Science 2014 Journal of Forest Science Vol.30 No.4

The present study is an attempt to give an account of the inventory of plant species, phytosociological characteristics of vegetation and pedological characteristics of Rambi Beat Forest under Senchal East Forest Zone, Darjeeling, West Bengal, India. Its plant community were analyzed quantitatively and synthetically. The results reflect dominancy of dicotyledons over monocotyledons in the four studied sites The plant community comprising of 50 plant species belonging to 40 genera of 27 families. Ramhi beat reflected higher diversity of species. Maximum IVI value was recorded by Viola surpense (47.17) in Rambhi forest beat. The Berger parker index and evenness index were found to be highest for Viola surpense, Fragaria nubicola, Pilea umbrosa in Rambhi beat. The soil characteristics of the different pedons revealed alkaline nature of soil in Rambhi beat. Higher levels of soil organic carbon content reflect higher fertility of the soil of Rambhi beat. The response towards soil available nitrogen and phosphate were different among the ten pedons of Rambhi beat. Therefore, proper management and conservative measures needs to be implemented for conservation of bioresources in Senchel wildlife Sanctuary of West Bengal, India.

      • Economics & Politics in China-India Relations: New Developments and Emerging Issues

        ( Amitendu Palit ) 계명대학교 실크로드중앙아시아연구원 2020 Acta Via Serica Vol.5 No.2

This paper traces the trajectory of a variety of complicated economic and political developments between China and India - the world’s most ancient civilizations connected by rich history. These recent developments, which are heavily acrimonious and include military clashes involving loss of lives, have greatly damaged bilateral relations. The paper examines the reasons behind the bilateral relations dipping to new lows. Aside from specific bilateral disputes like outstanding border problems, China-India relations have been affected by global and regional developments. The paper identifies rising tensions between the U.S. and China, the evolution of the Belt and Road Initiative, and the growth of the Indo-Pacific construct, as the reasons that have expanded distance and mistrust between the two countries. Both China and India are now part of country coalitions aiming to marginalize each other’s strategic influences. The paper argues that such efforts by them are going to impact countries in their neighbourhood - such as in Central Asia - by forcing them to make complex choices in the areas of trade engagement and technological development.

Behavior of Welded Beam-Column Moment Connection in Steel Structure Under Localized Fire Scenario

Sabarna Palit,Sriman Kumar Bhattacharyya,Damodar Maity 한국강구조학회 2023 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.23 No.6

Steel structural members in different application areas may be subjected to localized flame impingement instead of flashover scenario due to several reasons. Though extensive research has been performed to study component level systems in conventional fires (ISO 834, ASTM E119, other parametric fire curve), the behavior of beam column rigid connection in localized fire is still not investigated in details. To understand the behavior of beam-column connection under localized fires, the present paper deals with a detailed numerical investigation of the behavior of a moment resisting frame (MRF) assembly with fully welded beam column connection in terms of connection rotation and forces under different positions of localized fire source underneath the exposed beam. For fire scenarios where the frame survived during the entire duration of fire, the post fire rotation of the connection located at far end from the fire source was found to be higher than the near end. Secondly, for cases where the frame failed, it was observed that for identical strength of weld and base material, failure is likely to initiate at the weld line connecting the bottom flange of the beam located at far end from the fire source. Finally parametric studies were performed with different weld sizes and it was concluded that size of weld has significant effect on increasing the joint survival time for MRF exposed to localized fire.

An experimental study on the performance and emission characteristics of a CI engine fuelled with Jatropha biodiesel and its blends with diesel

Ambarish Datta,Samiddha Palit,Bijan Kumar Mandal 대한기계학회 2014 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.28 No.5

The performance and emission characteristics of a compression ignition engine using mixture of jatropha biodiesel and mineral dieselhave been experimentally investigated. It is observed that brake specific fuel consumption increases with higher percentage of biodieselin the blends. Brake thermal efficiency decreases with the increased percentage of biodiesel in the blends. The maximum efficiency isfound to be 29.6% with pure diesel and 21.2% with pure biodiesel. Carbon mono-oxide and hydrocarbon emissions are improved withthe addition of biodiesel to diesel. NOx emission is found to be increased with pure biodiesel by 24% compared to mineral diesel.

Seasonal Effects on the Performance of Newly Evolved Bivoltine Hybrids of the Silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) Under Tropics

Rao, P.Sudhakara,Datta, R.K.,Palit, A.K.,Haque Rufaie, S.Z. Korean Society of Sericultural Science 2004 International Journal of Industrial Entomology Vol.9 No.2

Seasonal effects of the newly evolved bivoltine hybrid namely CSR$_2$${\times}$SR$_{5}$, SR$_1$ ${\times}$SR$_4$ and control hybrid KA${\times}$NB$_4$D$_2$ along with their parents SR$_1$, SR$_4$, SR$_{5}$, CSR$_2$ KA and NB$_4$D$_2$ were evaluated during different seasons of the year to understand genotype and environment interactions. Data were collected on five economic importance namely, pupation rate, cocoon yield, cocoon weight, cocoon shell ratio and filament length of the lines, hybrids and the control breeds/hybrid in three different seasons i.e., Pre-Monsoon, Monsoon and post-monsoon and subjected to relevant statistical methods. Seasonal performance of CSR$_2$, SR$_1$, SR$_4$ and SR$_{5}$ revealed superiority over control breeds KA and NB$_4$D$_2$. Both the hybrids i.e., CSR$_2$${\times}$SR$_{5}$ and SR$_1$${\times}$SR$_4$ performed well under diversified environmental conditions of tropical climate in a year indicating overall stability. These hybrids revealed highly significant (P < 0.01) variations for majority of the traits studied over the control hybrid KA${\times}$NB$_4$D$_2$.$.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Is Associated With Irritable Bowel Syndrome in African Americans

        ( Natalya Iorio ),( Kian Makipour ),( Amiya Palit ),( Frank K Friedenberg ) 대한소화기기능성질환·운동학회 2014 Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (JNM Vol.20 No.4

Background/Aims Psychosocial stressors likely play an important role in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The association between IBS and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in non-minorities has been described. Our aim was to investigate the potential association between IBS and PTSD in an urban African American population. Methods Our institution maintains a longitudinal population-based survey of African Americans (AA). The survey utilizes a complex, stratified sampling design. The study group consisted of adult AA meeting Rome III criteria for IBS of any subtype. The 4-item Primary Care PTSD screener was administered; score of ≥ 3 (range, 0-4) was considered positive for PTSD. Depression (Public Health Questionnaire-9 depression) and anxiety (generalized anxiety disorder-7) levels were measured using standardized scales. To assess quality of life, norm-based physical and mental component summary scores from the short-form 36 health survey version 2 were obtained. Descriptive and inferential statistics were calculated using Complex Sample Module of SPSS after weighting of the study sample. Results Four hundred nineteen subjects included corresponded to a weighted 21,264 (95% CI, 19,777-22,751) individuals. The prevalence of IBS in our sample of urban AA was 8.2%. In multivariate regression analysis, female gender, age > 40, higher educational attainment and divorce were independently associated with IBS. Those with IBS were considerably more likely to suffer from PTSD (OR, 4.54; 95% CI, 4.07-5.06). PTSD was independently associated with depression, anxiety, harmful drinking and substance abuse. Conclusions In AA, PTSD is independently associated with IBS. PTSD has a significantly negative impact on physical and mental self-assessment of quality of life. Evaluation of minorities presenting with functional gastrointestinal disorders should include screening for PTSD.

Line${\times}$Tester Analysis of Certain Quantitative Traits in Silkworm Bombyx mori L. under Optimum and Stress Rearing Conditions

        Rao, P.Sudhakara,Datta, R.K.,Kumari, K.M.Vijaya,Palit, A.K.,Bhat, S.A. Korean Society of Sericultural Science 2004 International Journal of Industrial Entomology Vol.8 No.1

The combining abilities in the 5 newly evolved thermo tolerant breeds viz., SR6, SR7, SR8 SR9 and SR10 of silkworm Bombyx mori L. and their 15 hybrids were made in a line${\times}$tester crossing programme. Data were analysed for seven quantitative traits i.e., pupation rate, cocoon yield, cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight, cocoon shell ratio, filament length and raw silk percentage under optimum room temperature $(25{\pm}{1^{\circ}C})$ conditions (In case of high temperature $(36{\pm}{1^{\circ}C})$ stress conditions five economic traits except filament length and raw silk percentage) with 3 widely adapted testers i.e., KA, CSR2 and CC1 as lines (females) and testers (males) respectively. The performance at high temperature and low humidity conditions aye only taken into consideration for selecting the best lines/hybrids. Among the lines SR6 exhibited positive General combining ability (GCA) effects for pupation rate, cocoon yield, cocoon weight and cocoon shell ratio traits, followed by SR7 for pupation rate, cocoon yield and cocoon shell weight and cocoon shell ratio. Among testers, KA exhibited positive GCA effects for two quantitative traits cocoon yield, cocoon weight and CSR2 for cocoon shell weight and cocoon shell ratio under adverse temperature conditions. The hybrid SR6${\times}$CC1 and SR7${\times}$CSR2 exhibited significant positive Specific combining ability (SCA) effects for majority of the traits in high temperature stress conditions of rearing. The better parent value of heterosis(Heterobeltiosis) was exhibited by the hybrid SR6${\times}$CC1 for pupation rate, cocoon yield, cocoon weight and cocoon shell weight and SR7${\times}$CSR2 for all the trails evaluated under high temperature conditions. Based on the results, the lines SR6 and SR7 was judged as best combiners and the hybrids SR6${\times}$CC1 and SR7${\times}$CSR2 can be selected for commercial exploitation in tropical climate.
