        Activity Profile of Indian College Students

        This crossectional study involved college attending students in India to analyze their various activity status. It was noted that, among 600 participants in each sex, 6.3% of males and 30.5% of females never participated in sporting activities. Carom was the most famous sporting activity and television viewing was found to be the most popular leisure activity, whereas cycling and walking were noted to be the most favorite daily activity. Knitting, toy making and singing were reported to be least popular leisure activity. Time spent weekly for sporting activities was observed to be higher in males than females. No female participant was found to spend greater than 10 hours/week for sporting activities. Load of daily domestic activities was carried out by female predominantly. Television viewing should be avoided as a leisure time activity otherwise in future this habit might cause ill effects on health, like increment of body fat, metal retardation, lack of creative mood etc.

        A Multiband Shunt Hybrid Active Filter with Sensorless Control

        This paper proposes a Multiband Shunt Hybrid Active Filter (SHAF) with sensorless control. A plant is modeled in the discrete- time domain and a controller is designed using the Pole shifting law in the polynomial domain. This control approach is very useful for filtering the load harmonics with reduced sensor counts where a low cost solution like SHAF is required. Multiple Synchronous Reference Frames (MSRF) and low pass filters are used to measure the $5^{th}$ and $7^{th}$ harmonic components separately from the load and filter currents. Individual current controllers are designed for the $5^{th}$ and $7^{th}$ harmonic currents. Control is realized in the stationary, three-phase (abc) reference frame. Performance of the controller is validated through simulation, using realistic plant and controller models, as well as experimentally on a full-scale distribution system.

      • Class D audio amplifier with hybrid control

        R-modeled speaker fed by sliding mode(SM) controlled half bridged audio amplifier(HBA) show significant phase difference between reference voltage and speaker current. The causes of phase difference possibly are inaccurate speaker model and phase lead/lag introduced by the output filter. To investigate phase difference, the transfer function of HBA and approximated first order model of the speaker were considered. With the aim of eliminating the phase difference between reference voltage and speaker current, a hybrid approach comprising SM controlled amplifier with linear control technique is proposed in this paper. The prototype sliding mode controlled amplifier of 20 W, 20 Hz to 20 kHz with 4/8 Ω speaker load is developed. Frequency response and experimental results with the prototype are experimentally obtained which show excellent command following of the speaker current with minimal phase lag.

      • Matrix Converter as UPFC for Transmission line Compensation

        Rapid developement of high power semiconductor devices with fast control features have given birth to several Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) controllers for improving power system performances. One of the advanced FACTS Controllers is Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC), which can control power flows, both real and reactive in Transmission line. This paper presents performance analysis of UPFC based on d-q axis theory. So far the standard practise of realizing the UPFC has been confined to connecting two inverters back to back with a DC link capacitor in between. This capacitor brings with it several disadvantages which affects the overall reliability of the UPFC. The Matrix Converter (MC) topology comes without any such bulky reactive element except for lighter components as filters. This paper examines the effectiveness of MC as UPFC and simulation results shows a comparable performance with the traditional back to back constructs.

      • Synchronization and Operation of Parallel Inverters using Droop Control

        To obtain a continuous power supply Distributed Generation (DG) with a Decentralized Power System (DPS), i.e. replacing a single UPS unit with multiple, smaller units in parallel, is emerging as new paradigm. The technically challenging aspect of DPS is the synchronization of inverters and load sharing among the parallel connected inverters. In this paper, a control method is proposed and implemented for synchronization and parallel operation of inverters. Droop control method has been used for equal power sharing, and design of power control loop. The design issues for voltage control loop are analyzed with the discussion of relative stability of the system. A current control loop is designed and analyzed to provide synchronization between the inverters.
